Crunchyroll is the best starting point for most dedicated anime fans because it focuses on anime and is the strongest fit for seasonal simulcasts and broad anime viewing. Netflix is a better companion for originals and general entertainment; HIDIVE can fill specific catalog gaps; and Hulu is a sensible hybrid for households that want anime alongside mainstream TV and movies.
There is no single service with every series, film, season, dub and subtitle track. This comparison focuses primarily on U.S. viewers and on what each service is suited to—not a claim of hands-on testing. Prices, catalogs and release schedules change, and availability can differ by country and even between seasons of the same show.

“Best” depends on whether you care most about current episodes, dubbed versions, particular exclusives, classics, or the value of a service you already pay for. Catalog counts are not a reliable shortcut: services may count seasons, specials, films and language versions differently.

Best overall for anime: Crunchyroll
For viewers who watch anime regularly, Crunchyroll is the most defensible first subscription. Its anime-first focus makes it the strongest default for people who want a mix of seasonal titles and catalog viewing rather than a small selection embedded in a general entertainment app. It is also the first service to check when weekly episodes are a priority. Crunchyroll is not a guarantee that every new show, film or franchise season will be available in your territory. Rights are title-specific, and a series may be split across platforms or have a film licensed separately. English dubs and other language tracks can also arrive on a different schedule from Japanese-audio episodes. Check the exact title and track before subscribing.
Choose it if: anime is a regular part of your viewing and you want an anime-focused service with a strong seasonal orientation. Skip or postpone it if: you only have one or two specific shows in mind and those are already available through a service you own.
Best for originals and mixed entertainment: Netflix
Netflix is the strongest mainstream companion in this group for viewers who want anime originals or selected exclusives without giving up a broad non-anime catalog. Its anime category is a useful starting point, but it is not a complete index of all availability in every country.

Netflix is less suitable as the only subscription for someone trying to follow every new weekly episode. Release strategies vary by title and region; a show may arrive in batches or later than its Japanese broadcast. That may be perfectly acceptable for a viewer who prefers to binge or mainly watches Netflix originals, but it is a real drawback for a simulcast-first fan.

Choose it if: you already subscribe, value originals, or share the account with people who watch other genres. Compare the current Netflix plans before signing up; the applicable plan affects cost and terms.
Best specialist add-on: HIDIVE
HIDIVE makes the most sense as a second service, not an automatic substitute for a broader anime option. It can be worthwhile when its current exclusives or selected seasonal shows match your watchlist. Some titles may offer alternate or uncensored versions where legally available, but do not assume that an entire catalog—or any particular title—is uncensored.
Its smaller selection is the main reason to check your must-watch list first. Pricing reports can be inconsistent, so confirm the current U.S. subscription terms directly on HIDIVE rather than relying on an old monthly or annual figure. A low headline price is only good value if the titles you want are there.

Hulu is worth considering when anime is one part of a wider TV-and-movie subscription. It can be a useful household choice, especially if you already use it for other programming, but anime-focused viewers should not mistake a worthwhile selection for comprehensive seasonal coverage.

Before adding another bill, search Hulu for the exact series and season you want, then compare its availability and language options with Crunchyroll or another service. See Hulu’s current plans for plan details; promotions and eligibility-based offers can change.
Prime Video and Max: useful for particular titles, not default anime hubs
Prime Video is most appealing if you already have Prime or are looking for a particular title. Keep the base service and Prime Video Channels distinct in your cost calculation: a show offered through an add-on channel may require a separate subscription. Check whether the same title is already included elsewhere before paying for a channel.
Max may have a curated set of high-profile anime, but it is generally better treated as a general entertainment service with anime in the mix than as a full replacement for an anime-first subscription. Confirm a specific title on Max before choosing it for anime.
Best for classics and free viewing
RetroCrush is the specialist to investigate if older anime is your main interest. Its relevance depends on whether it carries the particular classics you want and whether it is available where you live. Check its current catalog at RetroCrush.

Tubi and Pluto TV can provide legitimate, free, ad-supported anime, while official distributor or publisher YouTube channels may offer selected episodes or releases. These are good places to sample titles or browse older and rotating selections. They are less suitable if you need a complete current season, a specific language track, offline viewing or reliable access to a particular episode. Browse Tubi’s anime category and check Pluto TV for current offerings.
Free services are not the same as unofficial streaming sites. For legal viewing and more dependable playback, use the service or channel authorized to distribute the show.

Start with Crunchyroll if weekly seasonal viewing is your main reason to subscribe. Hulu and HIDIVE may carry selected seasonal titles as well, so compare the actual season lineup rather than assuming one platform has everything. Netflix is generally a weaker fit for viewers who want each new episode as soon as it follows the Japanese broadcast, because release timing and batch releases vary by title.
There is no safe universal promise such as “every episode arrives within a fixed number of hours.” The schedule depends on the show, region and licensing arrangement. Check the service’s schedule and the individual title page, and remember that subtitled and dubbed versions may have different release dates.

Which is best for dubbed anime?
Crunchyroll is a strong place to look for a wide range of anime and dubs, but “best for dubs” depends on the series, language and how quickly a dub is released. Netflix, Hulu and Prime Video may have the version you want for a particular title. No platform-wide claim about dub quality or completeness is useful without checking the title itself.
On the show page or during playback, verify that the correct season has the desired audio track and subtitles or captions. If you watch dubbed, check whether English captions are available and whether they match the dubbed dialogue; captions and subtitles may serve different purposes.
Best service combinations
- Crunchyroll + Netflix: A practical mix of anime-first seasonal viewing and Netflix originals or broader entertainment.
- Crunchyroll + HIDIVE: Consider this if specific HIDIVE exclusives or seasonal titles fill gaps in your Crunchyroll watchlist.
- Hulu + Netflix: A household-oriented pairing when general TV, films and selected anime matter more than maximum anime depth.
- Prime Video + an add-on channel: Only worthwhile when the channel’s particular titles justify its extra cost and do not duplicate another subscription.
You do not need to keep every service year-round. A cost-conscious approach is to list the shows you plan to watch, subscribe for the months those titles are available, and reassess before renewal. Check the current billing and cancellation terms directly with the service; annual plans and promotions can change the break-even point.

- Search the exact title on the service. Include the season, film or special—franchise rights may be split.
- Confirm your region. A listing in the U.S. does not establish availability in Canada, the U.K. or elsewhere.
- Check release status. Find out whether the season is complete, releasing weekly, or scheduled for a later date.
- Verify audio and text tracks. Confirm Japanese audio, English dub, subtitles and captions for the specific season or episode.
- Compare services, then confirm directly. A guide such as JustWatch’s U.S. search can help locate a title, but licensing changes can make third-party listings stale. The service’s own listing is the final check.
What to compare before paying
- Catalog fit: Check the actual titles, films and seasons on your watchlist, not an unverified library-size number.
- Release timing: Weekly simulcasts matter to some fans; others prefer to wait and binge.
- Language options: Dubs, subtitles and caption tracks vary by title and can arrive at different times.
- Total cost: Check monthly versus annual billing, ads, channel add-ons, bundles, taxes and any promotional conditions on the official checkout page.
- Practical access: Confirm your device is supported and whether the plan offers features you need, such as downloads or household streams. Do not assume those terms are identical across services or plans.
