For a weekend watchlist that spans animation, science fiction, action, horror and musical fantasy, start with these six 2024 films. This is an editorially selected mix, not an objective genre ranking: Metacritic’s year-end list and Rotten Tomatoes’ Golden Tomato awards offer different kinds of recognition, and neither is a genre-only guide.
How this watchlist was selected
The picks below come from films recognized in Metacritic’s 2024 year-end list or Rotten Tomatoes’ 2024 Golden Tomato awards. Metacritic published its list on January 6, 2025; eligibility covered films released from January 1 through December 31, 2024 in at least one U.S. theater or directly to streaming or VOD/digital services. It required at least seven professional reviews and ranked eligible films by weighted Metascore. Metacritic’s list is a useful shortlist, but it is not a genre-specific ranking.

Rotten Tomatoes’ 2024 awards page, updated March 1, 2025, says winners are selected through an adjusted weighted ranking that considers Tomatometer ratings and the number of critic reviews. Its method differs from Metacritic’s, so the two sources should not be read as a shared scorecard. Rotten Tomatoes’ awards page named Dune: Part Two the winner of Best Movies and Best Wide Release; the other Rotten Tomatoes-recognized titles here were nominees.
Six genre films for different weekend moods
For animated, emotionally accessible science fiction: The Wild Robot
Metacritic classifies The Wild Robot as animation, science fiction and family. Its premise—a shipwrecked robot befriending the wildlife on an island—makes it the clearest choice here for viewers who want a science-fiction setting with an accessible, relationship-focused story. It also appeared among Rotten Tomatoes’ 2024 Best Movies nominees. Metacritic’s 2024 list and Rotten Tomatoes’ awards page provide those recognitions.

- The Help (Three-Disc Combo: Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy)
For dialogue-light animated fantasy: Flow
In Flow, a cat joins other animals trying to survive a flood. Metacritic classifies it as animation, family and fantasy, and notes its Best Animated Film recognition for 2024. Its animal-led, flood-survival setup offers a different animated route from The Wild Robot for viewers looking for fantasy rather than a robot-centered science-fiction premise. Metacritic’s list identifies the film and its recognition.
For large-scale science-fiction adventure: Dune: Part Two
Choose Dune: Part Two for a science-fiction and adventure pick recognized as Rotten Tomatoes’ 2024 Best Movies and Best Wide Release winner. That award status is a useful signal of critic recognition, not a guarantee that its scale or tone will suit every viewer. Rotten Tomatoes’ awards page names it as the winner in both categories.

For action-adventure: Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is the action-adventure option in this group. Rotten Tomatoes nominated it for both Best Movies and Best Wide Release of 2024, making it a fit for a weekend when you want a more action-driven alternative to the list’s animated stories and science-fiction epic. The awards page records those nominations.
For body horror—and a more intense watch: The Substance
The Substance is the body-horror choice, not a catch-all horror recommendation. Rotten Tomatoes nominated it for Best Movies and Best Wide Release in 2024. Its genre and premise call for a more deliberate mood check than the family-oriented animated picks; viewers who want a lighter or more broadly accessible evening may prefer another title here. Rotten Tomatoes’ awards page confirms its nominations.
Rank #3
For musical fantasy: Wicked
For a musical-fantasy weekend, consider Wicked, another Rotten Tomatoes nominee for Best Movies and Best Wide Release of 2024. It offers a markedly different kind of genre experience from either the body horror of The Substance or the science-fiction scale of Dune: Part Two. Rotten Tomatoes’ awards page lists its nominations.
Choose by the kind of evening you want
- Family-oriented animation: Start with The Wild Robot or Flow; the first is classified as science fiction, while the second is classified as fantasy.
- Big-screen-style spectacle: Pick Dune: Part Two for science-fiction adventure or Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga for action-adventure.
- A more intense genre film: The Substance is the body-horror option; consider its tone before starting it.
- Music and fantasy: Choose Wicked.
Where to stream or rent these 2024 films
Streaming and rental catalogs vary by country and change over time. The watch-location details in Metacritic’s January 2025 article are historical, not reliable confirmation of where a film is available in October 2026. Check the film’s official distributor or platform listing in your region before planning a watch; availability for these six titles is not established here.
