Disney’s announcement listed interviews with Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, David Marks and Bruce Johnston, as well as musicians and producers Lindsey Buckingham, Janelle Monáe, Ryan Tedder and Don Was. The range of voices suggests a film looking beyond a simple performance retrospective to the people and relationships around the group.
The Associated Press characterized the documentary as placing family history alongside the band’s harmonies, with difficult episodes and disputes as well as happier early memories. That is the AP’s broad description, not a scene-by-scene account of the film. Director Frank Marshall told the AP: “It’s the blend not only of the family story, but the blend of the harmonies. If you took one element out, you wouldn’t have the Beach Boys.”

Who made The Beach Boys?
Frank Marshall and Thom Zimny directed the documentary, and Mark Monroe wrote it. Disney credits Kennedy/Marshall and White Horse Pictures as the production companies.
In Disney’s trailer announcement, Brian Wilson said: “I’m super happy with the way the documentary turned out, they did an amazing job,” says Brian Wilson. “It really brought me back to those days with the boys, the fun and the music. And of course those incredible harmonies.”
