This is a choice specific to the film’s continuity, not a universal fact about Martha in every Batman story. Readers interested in the comic’s version can compare it with The Batman; the graphic novel is a source for some of the film’s ideas, not a retelling of the film’s full story.
Did Thomas Wayne have Edward Elliot killed?
Thomas was a wealthy Gotham figure running for mayor, with a campaign associated with the city’s renewal and an orphanage. Reporter Edward Elliot investigated Martha’s family history. The revelations in the film implicate Thomas in asking crime boss Carmine Falcone to kill Elliot after Elliot rejected Thomas’s effort to contain the story.

That is a serious moral compromise, but it does not turn Thomas into a conventional villain. The story presents him as a father who tried to protect his family and made a terrible choice in doing so. DC’s account of how the film handles the Waynes’ deaths discusses the revelations and their effect on Bruce’s understanding of his father.
Did Thomas cause the deaths of Bruce’s parents?
The Batman raises a possible connection between Falcone and the Waynes’ murders, but it does not conclusively establish that Thomas ordered his own or Martha’s death. Treating that suspicion as a confirmed fact goes beyond what the film’s revelations establish.

How do the revelations change Bruce’s view of his parents?
Bruce and Alfred had remembered Thomas and Martha through their virtues. Bruce was young when they died, so his memories could not contain the full range of their hopes, struggles and flaws. The new information forces him to see his father as a person capable of a grave mistake, rather than only as the idealized symbol he had carried with him. It complicates the Wayne legacy without making their goodness unreal.
That focus fits Reeves’s description of the film’s scope. In DC’s account of creating the world of The Batman, the director says: “The thing about the movie is that it isn’t a Batman origin story, but it is the origin story of every rogues gallery character that you come across.” The Wayne revelations are part of that broader portrait of a Gotham shaped by secrets, power and consequences.

How does the film’s Wayne history differ from Batman’s general origin?
DC’s general Batman character page describes the familiar broad origin: Bruce witnesses his parents’ murder and becomes Batman. The Batman retains that foundation but adds a political scandal and Martha’s Arkham family background. DC notes that the Arkham lineage and Thomas’s mayoral campaign draw on Batman: Earth One; they should be understood as film-specific choices rather than facts shared by every version of Batman.
