The Ballad of Wallis Island is worth watching if you like character-led comedy-dramas where music carries the feelings the characters struggle to say aloud. James Griffiths’s film is gentle and funny, but its story of former bandmates and lovers also has a painful undercurrent: affection survives, while the people who shared it have changed. That is my reading of its quiet emotional force, not a promise that every viewer will feel the same.
What is The Ballad of Wallis Island about?
Charles (Tim Key), an eccentric lottery winner living alone on a remote island, invites his favorite folk duo, McGwyer Mortimer, to perform a private concert. The duo—Herb McGwyer (Tom Basden) and Nell Mortimer (Carey Mulligan)—were once musical partners and lovers. Their reunion brings unresolved tensions into Charles’s carefully imagined evening. Focus Features describes the film as a comedy and drama, and its modest setup gives those old relationships room to take center stage.

The film’s central question is not whether the concert will happen so much as what it means to bring people back together after their shared life has moved on. Charles’s devotion to the music gives the reunion a pleasingly eccentric reason to happen; Herb and Nell’s history gives it emotional stakes.
Why the music makes the story hit harder
The folk songs are more than atmosphere. They belong to the characters’ past, and hearing them again makes the distance between that past and their present tangible. A song can preserve a moment while the people who made it have changed. That tension gives the film its bittersweet character: music offers connection, but it cannot simply restore the relationship or the ambitions attached to it.

The result is intimate rather than grand. Griffiths keeps attention on a small group of people and the awkward, tender business of meeting one another again. The film’s quiet humor—often sharpened by Charles’s earnestness—keeps the melancholy from becoming heavy-handed. I found that restraint more moving than a larger, more dramatic treatment would have been.
How the feature grew from a short film
The story began with the 2007 short The One and Only Herb McGwyer Plays Wallis Island, written and starring Tom Basden and Tim Key. Key said the feature took 17 years to develop. Adding Nell, played by Mulligan, opened a way to explore Herb’s life after his earlier relationship and musical partnership, rather than simply stretching the short’s premise into a longer concert story. Focus Features’ interview with Basden and Key explains how that character helped the feature find its larger emotional shape.
Is it the right kind of film for you?
This is a good fit if you enjoy an understated chamber-piece comedy-drama, music woven into the emotional story, and characters working through regret without a plot built around suspense or spectacle. It is less suited to viewers looking for a fast-moving plot, a broad ensemble, or a conventional romantic resolution. Its strongest payoff is in watching people reckon with what they once were to one another—and what can still be shared.
Lindsey Bahr’s Associated Press review likewise reads the film as a gentle ode to moving on, praising the chemistry between Mulligan and Basden and Key’s comic presence. Bahr awarded it four out of four stars. That response aligns with the film’s tender, restrained approach; the emotional effect, of course, will depend on a viewer’s appetite for that tone.

Ratings, runtime, and content guidance
Universal Pictures at Home lists a runtime of 1 hour 40 minutes and a US PG-13 rating for some language and smoking. The UK BBFC classification is separate: it lists moderate bad language. Its home-entertainment record also notes adult smoking, references to a deceased partner, and a scene in which a character mistakes another person’s swim for a possible suicide attempt. Runtime listings vary slightly: the BBFC gives versions at around 99 minutes, so the difference from the distributor’s listing is small and not evidence of a meaningful content discrepancy.
As a measure of critical and audience reception, Rotten Tomatoes listed a 97% Tomatometer from 145 reviews and a 93% Popcornmeter from 100+ verified ratings when accessed on October 8, 2026. Those are service snapshots that can change, not a guarantee of how any individual viewer will respond.
Where to watch
Universal Pictures at Home lists Digital and Blu-ray formats. The BBFC’s UK home-entertainment record also identifies physical media and VOD/streaming. Streaming and retail availability depend on territory and can change; check local services for current options. The film was shot in Wales, though its story’s remote island setting is not a documentary portrait of a specific community.
