The best board game for your table depends on who is playing and what kind of evening you want. For a cooperative family game, start with Bomb Busters, winner of the 2025 Spiel des Jahres. For the expert-game award winner, consider Endeavor: Die Tiefsee (Deep Sea). If you want a pick drawn from many reviewers’ annual lists, the 2025 aggregate led with Galactic Cruise.
These recommendations use two different signals: the Spiel des Jahres jury’s awards and nominations, and BoardGameoftheYear.org’s compilation of reviewer lists. Neither tells you exactly what your group will enjoy, so compare player count, age guidance, listed duration, and theme before choosing.

Endeavor: Die Tiefsee (Deep Sea): best expert-game award pick
Endeavor: Die Tiefsee, also listed as Deep Sea, won the 2025 Kennerspiel des Jahres. The jury describes it as an “Atmospheric underwater adventure with variety and depth for 1 to 4 people aged 12 and over.” It is the pick to investigate if you want the winner of the expert-game category and like the underwater theme. The category is an award distinction, not a specific weight rating or a guarantee that the game will suit every experienced player.

Reviewer-list favorites beyond the award winners
BoardGameoftheYear.org’s displayed 2025 aggregate offers a different way to find candidates: it combines games appearing on reviewers’ annual lists. Its 2026 page display reports 966 games, 3,748 rankings, and 357 reviewers for its 2025 rankings. These are figures reported by the site, not independently audited totals. The aggregate is useful as a broad signal of reviewer-list presence, not a controlled measure of game quality or a prediction of what you will like.

Galactic Cruise: the aggregate’s top pick
Galactic Cruise placed first in the displayed aggregate. The site reports that it appeared on 90 “Best of 2025” lists, earned 486 points, and was named “BGotY” on 33 lists. Its table lists 1–4 players and 90–150 minutes, making it the option here for a group willing to set aside a longer session. Those numbers describe the aggregate and table listing, not a universal verdict or guaranteed play time.
The Lord of the Rings: Fate of the Fellowship: for Middle-earth fans
This game placed second in the displayed aggregate, with a listed range of 1–5 players and 60–150 minutes. Its Middle-earth setting may make it a more appealing starting point for Tolkien fans than a game chosen purely by ranking. The aggregate placement does not establish whether its play style will suit a particular group.

Hot Streak: a candidate for a larger group
Hot Streak ranked third in the displayed aggregate. The table lists 2–9 players and 20 minutes, which makes it the clearest candidate on this shortlist to compare when you need a wide player range and a short listed duration. Actual play time can vary by group.
View BoardGameoftheYear.org’s 2025 aggregate and ranking table. The page says its 2025 polls are final, but its displayed total counts can change; treat the ranking as the site’s compilation rather than a fixed industry-wide result.
