Martin McDonagh sets the story in 1923 on a fictional Irish island, where a private rupture becomes a public crisis against the distant sound of the Irish Civil War. Its real-world landscapes, sharply shaped dialogue and plaintive score give the small-scale conflict an expansive, uneasy atmosphere.
What is The Banshees of Inisherin about?
Lifelong friends Pádraic and Colm have an established routine until Colm abruptly decides he no longer wants to spend time with Pádraic. Pádraic tries to understand and reverse the decision; those efforts turn a quiet break between friends into an escalating dispute that affects the island community around them.

The premise stays intimate: this is not a mystery about why an entire community has changed, but a story about what happens when one person ends a relationship and the other cannot let it end quietly. The island makes the conflict hard to keep private. Neighbors know the men, notice the rupture and are drawn into its consequences.
Who wrote and stars in the film?

- A pair of lifelong friends on a remote Irish island find themselves at an awkward time in their relationship when one of them no longer wants to be friends.
McDonagh has described using rehearsal and preparation to establish a shared understanding of a story and its characters before filming. In a Directors Guild of America Q&A, he said he uses that time to explain why he wrote the work and what he feels scenes are about, so the cast can agree on their characters and the material before shooting. (DGA Q&A.)
What year is The Banshees of Inisherin set in?
The story is set in 1923, during the Irish Civil War. The war remains at a distance: it is heard and felt as background tension, rather than directly governing the islanders’ day-to-day lives. The film’s friendship conflict can invite comparison with a wider national division, but it is not a direct account or one-to-one allegory of the Civil War. The Walt Disney Company’s production feature describes the setting and the conflict’s presence on the mainland (production feature).
Is Inisherin a real island?
No. Inisherin is fictional, not a real destination. The production account says McDonagh wanted the island to feel mythical rather than correspond to one specific place. Its visual geography draws on real locations, but the film’s island should not be mistaken for a named island that visitors can travel to.
Where was The Banshees of Inisherin filmed?
The production combined locations on Inishmore, in the Aran Islands, with locations on Achill Island in County Mayo. Inishmore provided landscape settings and the location for Colm’s house at Gort Na gCapall; pub scenes were filmed on Achill. The Walt Disney Company’s account describes the crew’s use of the locations and the visual role of the Aran Islands’ stone walls and patchwork plots. It also notes that Dún Aonghasa is visible from the constructed house location.
Inishmore and Achill are separate real places used to create the fictional Inisherin. The production feature describes them as 150 km apart; that is the distance given in the 2022 account, not a travel-time estimate. It also reports around 1,200 residents across the Aran Islands, an approximate figure in that feature rather than a current census count. (The Walt Disney Company.)
How do the landscape and score shape the film?
The scenery is not simply a beautiful backdrop to a bleak story. BFI Southbank’s programme notes describe Ben Davis’s imagery as holding pastoral beauty alongside claustrophobia: open views coexist with a sense that the characters are hemmed in by place, routine and one another. That is a critical reading of the cinematography, not a technical specification or a claim about how all viewers respond.
The same BFI notes characterize Carter Burwell’s score as plaintive and led by harp and glockenspiel. Its restrained quality suits a story built around loss and a friendship that cannot be repaired by returning to the old routine. (BFI Southbank programme notes.)

Official listings differ slightly by source and region. La Biennale di Venezia lists the 2022 film at 109 minutes; 20th Century Studios Australia/New Zealand lists it as 1 hour 54 minutes. Check the listing for the edition or territory you are watching rather than treating either figure as a universal runtime.
Where can I watch The Banshees of Inisherin?
Availability depends on country and changes over time. Searchlight Pictures’ official page links to options to buy, rent or stream, while the 20th Century Studios Australia/New Zealand page names Disney+ for that regional listing. Those pages do not establish the same availability everywhere, so check the official film page for your territory and the services available to you.
The Australia/New Zealand studio page gives the film an M rating and a regional release date of 26 December 2022; those details apply to that page’s market, not automatically to other countries. It also records six Academy Award nominations across picture, acting, directing and original screenplay categories. (20th Century Studios Australia/New Zealand.)
