Balenciaga’s rise rests on two connected stories: founder Cristóbal Balenciaga’s mastery of couture construction and silhouette, and the modern house’s expansion into a broader luxury brand under successive creative leaders. Its history explains its influence, but the available financial disclosures do not establish a standalone sales ranking for Balenciaga.
Who founded Balenciaga, and when did it reach Paris?
Cristóbal Balenciaga founded his fashion house in Spain in 1917. Kering’s history places the founding in San Sebastián; the house later moved its operations to Paris during the Spanish Civil War. Balenciaga opened his Paris couture house at 10 Avenue George V in 1937 and staged his first runway show there that August, according to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
The move established the Paris couture house that became internationally influential, while the Spanish founding remained part of the brand’s identity. The company’s own timeline records both milestones.
Why Cristóbal Balenciaga’s designs mattered
Construction, not just appearance
Balenciaga was known among his peers as a technically accomplished couturier. The Met describes him as capable of draping, cutting and fitting his own patterns—skills that let him shape a garment from its underlying structure rather than rely on surface decoration alone.

A different relationship between clothes and the body
In the postwar years, Balenciaga moved away from the curving hourglass silhouette associated with Christian Dior’s New Look. He explored fluid lines, shifting waistlines and sculptural volume. Kering’s history points to dropped waists, exaggerated shapes and structural jackets as hallmarks of his work.
These choices help explain his influence more precisely than the general claim that he “revolutionized fashion”: his construction and changing silhouettes offered alternatives to the dominant body shape of the period. In 1957, he introduced the sack dress. Kering describes its minimal form as challenging restrictive conventions; that is the company’s characterization, not a measurable account of its social effects.
How the house grew beyond couture
The contemporary Balenciaga business developed a wider product universe than the founder’s couture operation. Kering’s 2024 registration document describes a rebirth from the 1990s into the early 2000s, with the house broadening from ready-to-wear into handbags and developing shoes and accessories. That expansion connected Balenciaga’s design identity to products reaching customers beyond couture.

Kering dates two milestones to 2001: Balenciaga joined the group, and the Le City bag launched. The bag became a recognizable part of the house’s modern story, while footwear and accessories broadened the categories through which the brand could express its aesthetic. The chronology supports a story of expansion, but it does not establish one single cause for commercial success.

Fragrance is another extension, rather than the central explanation for the house’s ascent. Kering dates the launch of Le Dix to 1947 and says the house announced ten new fragrances in 2025.
How successive creative leaders shaped the modern brand
Balenciaga’s modern identity has developed through successive creative leaders working with the house’s couture legacy. The contrast between Cristóbal Balenciaga’s emphasis on construction and silhouette and later designers’ broader use of ready-to-wear, accessories and runway spectacle is useful as an interpretive lens—not a claim that every collection fits neatly into one category.

In 2021, the house returned to couture after 53 years away, according to Kering. The return brought couture back into the contemporary house’s activities alongside ready-to-wear and accessories.
In May 2025, the Associated Press reported that Pierpaolo Piccioli would succeed Demna and take over in July, overseeing womenswear, menswear, accessories and couture. Kering’s house page lists Piccioli as creative director and Gianfranco Gianangeli as CEO in 2025. The change marks a new leadership chapter, but it does not by itself show how the house’s future collections or business will perform.

What the 2022 campaign controversy involved
Balenciaga’s success story also includes a serious reputational crisis. Reuters reported criticism of two separate campaigns in 2022. In one, children appeared holding a teddy-bear-shaped handbag in bondage-style straps. In another, a Spring 2023 office-set campaign included papers bearing text from a 2008 U.S. Supreme Court ruling about child pornography.

Balenciaga said the papers were third-party props and had not been approved. Creative director Demna and CEO Cédric Charbit apologized. Demna said, “I want to personally apologize for the wrong artistic choice of concept for the gifting campaign with the kids,” Reuters reported in December 2022. Reuters also reported that the company said it would not pursue litigation and that Charbit described new review procedures, including an image board to evaluate content.
The reporting concerns campaign imagery and the use of the legal text as a prop; it does not establish that the brand endorsed the ruling’s subject or that criminal conduct occurred. The episode shows how creative choices can carry reputational costs. The available reporting does not establish the controversy’s long-term financial impact.

Kering’s 2024 results, released in 2025, say Balenciaga leather goods continued to be well received. They do not give standalone Balenciaga revenue, so the statement is a limited signal about one product category, not proof of the brand’s overall financial performance or market rank.

Kering reported €17.2 billion in group revenue for 2024. Its combined “Other Houses” segment reported €3.2 billion in revenue, down 8% as reported and 7% on a comparable basis, and recorded an operating loss. That segment covers multiple houses; neither its revenue nor its loss can be attributed to Balenciaga alone. The disclosures therefore do not substantiate a precise ranking of Balenciaga among fashion brands by sales.
Who owns Balenciaga today?
Balenciaga is part of Kering, the French luxury group whose house history dates the brand’s entry into the group to 2001. Kering is the source for its own ownership, leadership and financial disclosures; those corporate materials establish the relationship but do not provide a standalone Balenciaga sales series.
