Why Matthew showed up in Auckland
ABC’s episode announcement identifies this as episode 2104, scheduled for July 29, 2024, after Jenn and the contestants traveled to Auckland from Australia. Matthew had flown to New Zealand to tell Jenn he was ready to get engaged to her. Jenn told the contestants that her ex was there to profess his love and wanted to join her journey. The news caught the men off guard and raised concerns about what his arrival might mean for their relationships with Jenn.
Jenn listens, but questions the timing
When Jenn and Matthew spoke privately, she told him that his trip touched her, while also expressing confusion about why he had chosen this moment to return. Matthew’s explanation was that he felt it was now or never: Jenn was on the verge of becoming engaged to someone else.

How the men reacted—and Jenn’s decision
Matthew later spoke with the contestants and said he was sorry he had come because he did not want to take away from their journey or Jenn’s. His appearance had already unsettled the group. ABC7 reported that Devin was especially upset and said the situation brought up feelings connected to being cheated on; that is Devin’s reported reaction, not independent confirmation of a past event.

Jenn told the men that Matthew had said all the right things, but to the wrong person. She then moved on to the rose ceremony, making clear that she did not want to resume a relationship with her ex.

Matthew’s arrival was the episode’s central disruption, but it unfolded within the season’s scheduled Auckland travel and relationship storylines. The visit briefly put pressure on Jenn’s newer connections; it was not the episode’s only focus.
