Its first-trailer framing points to an origin story shaped by that association, but the film is a dramatization—not a neutral historical record. It is also distinct from the reality-television competition that later shared its title.
What is The Apprentice about?
The Festival de Cannes describes the film as charting young Donald Trump’s ascent through a “Faustian deal” with influential right-wing lawyer and political fixer Roy Cohn. That phrase belongs to the festival’s synopsis: it captures the film’s dramatic interpretation of their relationship, not an independently established historical conclusion. Festival de Cannes film listing
Cannes’s introduction frames Cohn as pivotal to Trump’s career during the 1970s. The story therefore centers not simply on Trump’s beginnings, but on the influence and methods the film associates with Cohn as Trump tries to build power.
Who made the film, and who plays Trump and Cohn?
Ali Abbasi directed The Apprentice, and Gabriel Sherman wrote the screenplay. Sebastian Stan plays Donald Trump, Jeremy Strong plays Roy Cohn, and Maria Bakalova plays Ivana Trump. These are film credits, not claims that the performances or scenes reproduce events exactly. Festival de Cannes film listing

How long is it, and when was it made?
The Festival de Cannes lists the feature as a 2024 production, with Canada, Denmark, and Ireland named as production countries, and a runtime of 120 minutes. It premiered at Cannes on May 20, 2024, according to the Associated Press. Festival de Cannes film listing Associated Press report from the Cannes premiere
Why was the film disputed?
The film is labeled “inspired by true events,” but that label does not make its scenes documentary evidence. At the Cannes premiere, the Associated Press reported on a scene involving an allegation Ivana Trump made in a 1990 divorce deposition. AP noted that Donald Trump denied the allegation and that Ivana Trump later said she had not meant it literally and had felt violated. Those accounts should be understood together; the film’s depiction does not independently prove the allegation. Associated Press report from the Cannes premiere

Calling the film an origin story describes its focus on Trump’s younger years and the relationship with Cohn that the movie presents as formative. It does not mean the feature is a documentary or that every event shown is established fact. For historical claims, distinguish the film’s interpretation from attributed reporting and statements by the people involved.
