Its scenes mix reported accounts with dramatic compression, disputed claims and at least one scene its screenwriter has acknowledged inventing. Here’s what is known about 10 moments, and where the evidence stops.
Is The Apprentice based on a true story?
Broadly, yes: the film uses the historical Trump-Cohn relationship and Trump’s early real-estate career as the foundation for its rise-to-power story. But a historical premise does not make every scene or line of dialogue a record of what happened. The Guardian’s October 5, 2024 interview describes the film as a dramatized biography, while Axios’s October 8, 2024 explainer summarizes its claimed basis and plot. Screenwriter Gabriel Sherman has also confirmed that he invented at least one scene.

The most useful way to judge the film is to separate documented context, attributed testimony, disputed accounts and acknowledged invention. A film scene is not independent evidence that an event happened.
Did Roy Cohn mentor Donald Trump and give him his rules?
Cohn’s influence on the young Trump is a central historical premise of the film, and reporting about the production describes their relationship as a real one. The film presents Cohn teaching Trump an aggressive approach to conflict, but its conversations and memorable rules are scripted dialogue unless independently confirmed by a contemporaneous source. MovieMaker’s October 31, 2024 fact-check, updated January 7, 2026, and Axios’s October 8, 2024 explainer support the broader relationship—not a word-for-word transcript of their private exchanges.

Was the Trump family business sued over housing discrimination?
The film depicts Trump turning to Cohn for help in a federal case concerning allegations that the Trump family’s housing business discriminated against Black tenants. The broad case context is supported in secondary reporting, including Axios’s October 8, 2024 explainer. The reporting cited here does not include the underlying pleadings, however, so it does not independently establish every detail of the film’s legal scenes, private meetings or dialogue. Treat those dramatized exchanges as the film’s reconstruction, not verified courtroom history.
What happened to Fred Trump Jr., and how much of the film’s portrayal is documented?
Fred Trump Jr. died in 1981, and The Guardian’s October 5, 2024 interview reports that he was an alcoholic. The film uses his relationship with Donald as personal context for the story. Those biographical points do not verify the intimate conversations shown on screen or the emotional meaning the film assigns to them; those are part of its interpretation.
Did Ivana Trump accuse Donald Trump of rape?
In a 1990 divorce deposition, Ivana Trump described an incident that the film depicts as an assault. The wording and its later qualification matter. The Guardian’s May 20, 2024 report says Ivana later explained that she felt violated but did not intend “rape” to be understood literally or as a criminal accusation. Donald Trump denied her account. The Associated Press’s May 21, 2024 report and TIME’s May 23, 2024 explainer also describe the deposition, denial and later qualification.
Rank #2
This is a contested account, not an adjudicated finding. The deposition, Ivana’s later statement and Trump’s denial should be considered together; the film’s staging cannot resolve the dispute.

The film shows Trump undergoing scalp-reduction surgery. MovieMaker’s October 31, 2024 fact-check, updated January 7, 2026, traces the detail to Ivana Trump’s account of a 1989 procedure, relayed through Harry Hurt III’s book and reported in connection with the divorce testimony. Trump denied having the procedure. The reporting does not provide medical records confirming it, so the surgery should be described as an attributed claim, not an independently verified medical fact.
Did Trump have liposuction?
The liposuction detail is tied to the same reported testimony behind the scalp-surgery scene. Trump denied ever having liposuction, according to MovieMaker’s October 31, 2024 fact-check, updated January 7, 2026. The cited reporting does not establish the procedure through medical records; the film’s depiction therefore cannot be treated as confirmation.

Were Roy Cohn’s cufflinks fake?
In the film, Trump gives Cohn cufflinks presented as costly Tiffany diamonds, and Ivana reveals they are knock-offs. Director Ali Abbasi told MovieMaker the gift was based on real evidence. MovieMaker’s October 31, 2024 fact-check, updated January 7, 2026, also reports that Cohn’s former partner believed the cufflinks were neither genuine diamonds nor from Tiffany. Abbasi could not establish whether Cohn knew that while he was alive. The specific reveal through Ivana—and what Cohn understood about the gift—remains uncertain dramatic construction.
Did Roy Cohn die of AIDS?
MovieMaker’s October 31, 2024 fact-check, updated January 7, 2026, reports that Cohn’s death certificate attributed his death to AIDS-related complications. The same account says Cohn denied having AIDS and said he had liver cancer. Because the original certificate is not presented in the reporting cited here, the careful formulation is that the certificate was reported to list AIDS-related complications, not that this article has independently examined the document.

Did Roy Cohn blackmail a Department of Justice official?
The film includes Cohn blackmailing a Department of Justice official with compromising photographs. Sherman acknowledged that he invented this scene. In MovieMaker’s October 31, 2024 fact-check, updated January 7, 2026, Sherman said: “I’m not worried this scene would hurt the film’s credibility because the movie is art, not journalism.” This is the clearest confirmed example of fictionalized plotting among these moments; it should not be repeated as a documented incident.

How accurate is The Apprentice overall?
The film’s broad arc draws on Trump’s early real-estate career and his relationship with Cohn, but it compresses a life into a feature-length origin story. The evidence differs from scene to scene: some claims come from attributed testimony, some from secondary reporting, some remain disputed, and the blackmail sequence is acknowledged invention. The Guardian’s October 5, 2024 interview and Axios’s October 8, 2024 explainer provide context for the film’s biographical framing; neither makes its dramatic scenes a substitute for contemporaneous records.
For contested moments, keep four questions separate: what kind of source supports the claim, whether it has independent corroboration, whether anyone denied or later qualified it, and whether the filmmakers have acknowledged dramatization. That distinction is more informative than labeling the entire film simply “true” or “false.”
