The Apple TV refresh once expected in 2025 did not arrive. As of August 18, 2026, Apple still sells the third-generation Apple TV 4K, introduced in October 2022. Recent reporting points to a possible 2026 successor, but Apple has not confirmed its release date, price, design or specifications. If you need a streamer now, the current model remains capable; if you are considering paying Apple’s full U.S. price, waiting for official details is the more cautious choice.
What happened to the expected 2025 Apple TV?
Rumor coverage during 2025 suggested Apple might refresh its streaming box before the end of the year. That launch window passed without a successor. Apple’s October 2022 announcement identifies the current generation as the third-generation Apple TV 4K, and retrospective reporting notes that the anticipated 2025 model did not appear.
Recent reports have shifted expectations to 2026, with some suggesting a launch later in the year. That is still a reported possibility, not an Apple announcement. The 2025 prediction and today’s 2026 speculation should not be treated as equally current or as confirmed plans.

What Apple TV 4K can you buy now?
Apple’s current model is the third-generation Apple TV 4K, powered by an A15 Bionic chip. Apple’s U.S. store lists two configurations: 64GB with Wi‑Fi for $199, and 128GB with Wi‑Fi and Ethernet for $249. These are U.S. store prices as seen in the latest available listing; prices elsewhere, taxes and retailer discounts may differ.
| Configuration | Storage | Networking | Apple U.S. store price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wi‑Fi | 64GB | Wi‑Fi 6 | $199 |
| Wi‑Fi + Ethernet | 128GB | Wi‑Fi 6, Gigabit Ethernet and Thread networking | $249 |
Both versions support 4K Dolby Vision, HDR10+ and Dolby Atmos, and include a USB-C Siri Remote. The box can also support FaceTime on a television using a paired iPhone or iPad, and can serve as a smart-home hub. Apple’s specification and product pages list the hardware and features; Apple’s U.S. buying page lists the current configurations.
“Apple TV” can mean the set-top box, the tvOS platform, the Apple TV app or Apple’s streaming service. Here, the subject is the physical Apple TV 4K device.
What might a 2026 model improve?
The rumored changes point to an evolutionary hardware update, not a confirmed redesign. The processor and wireless hardware are the most frequently discussed possibilities; Apple has not published specifications for a successor.

A newer processor
Reports expect a newer A-series chip to replace the A15 Bionic, with A17 Pro mentioned as one possibility. A faster chip could make apps feel more responsive, help with supported games and provide more headroom for future tvOS features. No final chip, Apple benchmark or measured performance gain is established, so specific speed claims would be premature.
Newer wireless networking
Reports have linked a future Apple TV to Apple’s N1 networking chip, potentially enabling Wi‑Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and updated Thread support. Earlier coverage discussed Wi‑Fi 6E instead, so even the likely wireless standard is unsettled. These remain rumors, not confirmed specifications.
Wi‑Fi 7 would be most relevant in a home that already has a compatible router, fast broadband or high-bitrate local media. It is unlikely on its own to change the picture quality of ordinary streaming: the service, source, connection and television all constrain what viewers see. The current Wi‑Fi 6 model is adequate for many homes, and Wi‑Fi 7 is not a requirement for 4K streaming.
Possible Siri and Apple Intelligence features
Apple announced next-generation Apple Intelligence and Siri developments at WWDC26, but that announcement did not confirm a new Apple TV or promise that those capabilities will run on it. Reports connect a possible refresh with Apple’s Siri and AI work. If supported, more capable voice search, cross-app discovery or smart-home commands could be useful, but Apple has not specified which features would come to Apple TV, what hardware they would require, or where and in which languages they would be available.

Nor is it known whether such features would run on the device, depend on cloud processing or another Apple product, or work with third-party apps. Some software improvements may arrive through tvOS updates on compatible older hardware; others could require a newer chip. Apple’s support page identifies the current model and compatibility information, but it does not establish requirements for unannounced AI features.
Design and remote
Recent reporting suggests a successor could retain a broadly similar compact black set-top-box design. A revised Siri Remote has also been rumored, but its design, tracking features and inclusion are unconfirmed. The current remote uses USB-C and can be located with an iPhone, according to Apple’s product listing.
Claims about a built-in camera, gesture controls, an Apple TV/HomePod combination or a radically smaller enclosure are not established features of the expected model. There is also no confirmed 8K support, major storage increase or lower launch price.
Why might the refresh have slipped?
Some reporting has connected the possible delay to Apple’s work on a more capable Siri and broader Apple Intelligence plans, rather than to a confirmed major redesign. That is an explanation attributed to reporting, not a reason Apple has publicly given for a launch date change. The WWDC26 software announcement does not establish that an Apple TV release is imminent.

Buy the current Apple TV 4K or wait?
| Your situation | Practical choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You need a streamer now and use iPhone, iPad, AirPods, HomePod or HomeKit | Consider the current model, especially at a meaningful discount | It already offers Apple ecosystem integration, current 4K HDR formats and smart-home features. |
| You already own a working Apple TV 4K | Wait for confirmed specifications | The likely improvements are not yet established, and a new chip alone may not justify replacing a functioning box. |
| You want the newest chip, possible AI support or newer wireless standards | Wait | Those are the rumored reasons to consider a successor, but none has been confirmed for Apple TV. |
| You only need Netflix, YouTube or live-TV apps, and your television runs them well | Keep using the TV or compare lower-cost streamer options | The Apple box’s ecosystem strengths may not justify its premium if you do not use Apple services or devices. |
| You prioritize demanding gaming | Wait for chip and game-support details; compare dedicated gaming options | A faster chip could help supported Apple Arcade games, but Apple TV is not a guaranteed replacement for a console or gaming PC. |
| You need stable networking or Thread and can wire the box | Consider the current 128GB Ethernet configuration, subject to price | It includes Gigabit Ethernet and Thread. Wi‑Fi 7 is not necessary for routine 4K streaming. |
Apple’s U.S. prices of $199 and $249 make discounts important to the value calculation. If the current model is substantially below those prices from a reputable retailer and you need its features now, buying can make sense. Paying full price while a successor is rumored carries more risk of buyer’s remorse; Apple’s current price does not predict what a future model will cost.
A new processor does not automatically improve the image on your television. The panel, video format, source quality and streaming service determine the visible result. Likewise, a newer chip may help gaming, but game availability, controller support, storage and developer support still matter.
What is confirmed—and what is still rumor?
| Claim | Status as of August 18, 2026 |
|---|---|
| Third-generation Apple TV 4K with A15 Bionic is the current model | Confirmed by Apple |
| 64GB Wi‑Fi for $199 and 128GB Wi‑Fi + Ethernet for $249 in the U.S. | Listed by Apple’s U.S. store; regional prices may differ |
| A successor will arrive in 2026 | Reported possibility; Apple has not announced a date |
| A17 Pro or another newer A-series chip | Rumored; exact chip unconfirmed |
| N1, Wi‑Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 or updated Thread | Rumored; specifications unconfirmed |
| Apple Intelligence or new Siri functions on Apple TV | Possible; Apple TV support and hardware requirements unconfirmed |
| New remote, camera, gesture control, 8K or a HomePod combination | Not confirmed for a successor |
| Lower price or larger storage | Not confirmed |
Sources for the confirmed model and its features include Apple’s technical specifications, product page and support information. For rumors, see 2026 reporting on the possible chip and launch window and reporting on N1, wireless standards and design. Apple’s WWDC26 announcement covers its AI and Siri developments, not a new Apple TV’s specifications.
Bottom line for buyers
If you need an Apple-friendly streamer now, the 2022 Apple TV 4K remains a capable 4K box; look for a worthwhile discount rather than assuming its full U.S. store price is the best value. If you already have one, or would pay full price mainly for a newer chip, Wi‑Fi 7 or Apple Intelligence, wait until Apple confirms what the next model actually supports. The rumored 2026 refresh may improve responsiveness and future-proofing, but it is not yet a product with a confirmed date, price or feature list.
