The finale looks beyond the Shi clan conflict to its survivors, centering on Maomao and Jinshi as they reckon with what Loulan tried to protect.
What happens in “The Beginning”?
The official synopsis is brief: after the Shi clan conflict, Maomao sleeps beside children rescued from the fortress. Jinshi comes to her, and the two worry about each other’s injuries before reflecting on what Loulan protected and entrusted to them. That aftermath—not another mystery to solve—is the finale’s stated emotional starting point. The official episode page identifies it as episode 48.
The fuller plot details below come from an independent review published by Anime Rants on July 6, 2025, rather than from the official synopsis. In that account, children thought to be dead awaken after receiving an experimental medicine. Most retain their memories and are taken in by Ah-Duo; Kyou-u wakes with memory loss and a lasting injury. Those consequences give the rescue a complicated shape: survival is not a clean return to what came before.
The review also reports that Maomao eventually returns to work in the pleasure district, receives a letter from Xiaolan, and later sees Jinshi there. Its closing account follows Shisui, who trades a hairpin for a jade cicada and takes the name Tamamo as she prepares to leave the country. These events extend the finale past the fortress and give the episode a forward-looking final note. They are details from the reviewer’s recap, not claims contained in the official synopsis. How well does the finale work?
The episode’s central choice is to let the immediate aftermath breathe. The official synopsis places Maomao and Jinshi’s mutual concern beside their thoughts about Loulan, making their conversation a hinge between the conflict that has just ended and the future it leaves behind. A contemporaneous report from Japan Anime News, powered by ORICON NEWS, likewise emphasizes their check-in and reflection on Loulan’s choices. Read the report.
That focus makes the finale less a simple victory lap than a reckoning with what the rescue cost and what Loulan’s actions mean to the people left behind. The reported outcomes for the children reinforce that distinction: being saved does not erase injury or loss. The ending’s shift toward Maomao’s later life and Shisui’s departure broadens the emotional frame, though whether the final Shisui reveal feels earned depends on how its setup lands for each viewer.

Dengeki Online also linked to a Japanese Season 2 Blu-ray product page on Amazon.co.jp. That establishes a physical-edition route in Japan, but not its current stock, language options, playback compatibility, or the existence of an English Blu-ray edition.
