Spoilers for the full episode follow, including the Shi clan’s history and Loulan/Shisui’s fate. Season 2, episode 23 is series episode 47, officially titled 子の一族. English listings render that title as “The Shi Clan” or “Clan of Children.” The episode brings the Shi clan arc to a tragic close: Maomao is safe, but Jinshi’s confrontation with Shishou and Loulan’s revelations expose how much damage the family’s secrets have caused.
What happens in episode 47?
The episode opens after Maomao has been rescued from captivity. Jinshi has only a brief moment to feel relief before Shishou, head of the Shi clan, appears. He is surrounded and faces charges of rebellion, yet seems composed. At the same time, Loulan goes to Shenmei and begins explaining the concealed history of the Shi clan, as the official synopsis describes it: the anime’s episode listing.
Jinshi and his forces push into the clan’s stronghold. Shishou appears with a firearm and is killed after the encounter with Jinshi’s forces. Loulan, also known as Shisui, leads Jinshi to Shenmei and Suirei; the revelations there connect Shishou’s relationship with Shenmei, Suirei’s birth, and the clan’s internal history. Episode coverage describes the family’s cruelty and political failures as the forces that shape Loulan’s final actions.
Why Shishou’s motives complicate the confrontation
Shishou’s calm appearance in the face of capture makes the confrontation feel less like a simple defeat of a conventional villain. Leisurebyte and Anime Rants both describe a more complicated picture of his motives and relationship with Shenmei, while also drawing attention to the harm and failures bound up in his choices. That context can make his actions more legible without making him blameless.

The episode’s shift between armed conflict and family history is central to its dramatic effect. The stronghold sequence supplies immediate danger; Loulan’s disclosures give that danger a personal and political history. The revelations do not erase the violence surrounding the Shi clan. Instead, they explain how its internal failures helped bring the conflict to this point.
Loulan/Shisui’s final choice
Loulan’s final actions are the episode’s emotional center. Leisurebyte reads her sacrifice as an act of salvation and freedom; Anime Rants emphasizes the tragedy of her farewell and argues that she is more morally complicated than a simple “evil” label suggests. Those are the reviewers’ interpretations, but both focus on the same tension: her choice carries agency and loss at once.

That tension gives the Shi clan arc a conclusion shaped less by victory than by what the characters have inherited and what they can still choose. Loulan/Shisui’s fate is devastating precisely because the episode places her decision against the family history she has just helped expose.
Review: a strong emotional close to the Shi clan arc
The episode’s main balancing act is between action and exposition. Jinshi’s advance gives the disclosures momentum, while the revelations about Shishou, Shenmei, and Suirei broaden the confrontation beyond a straightforward stronghold assault. The emotional payoff depends on accepting that pause for family history; viewers who want the action to remain uninterrupted may find the shift deliberate, but it is also what gives Loulan’s ending its context.

The two cited reviews strongly favor the episode, though their scores are individual outlet judgments, not an audience aggregate: Leisurebyte gives it 4.5 overall and calls it a powerful emotional conclusion; Anime Rants rates it 10/10, centering Shisui’s fate. The episode’s most persuasive achievement is the way it lets tragedy and agency coexist rather than treating Loulan/Shisui as only a victim or only a villain.
