Spoilers for all seven episodes of The Abandons. Fiona Nolan and Constance Van Ness fight inside the burning Van Ness estate, but the finale never reveals which woman—or whether either woman—walks out. And there will be no Season 2 to answer the question: Netflix canceled the series after one season on January 21, 2026.
Why Fiona and Constance end up fighting
The season’s land-and-power dispute becomes a personal war when Constance learns that the Nolan family was responsible for her son Willem’s death. Willem raped Dahlia, Fiona’s daughter and ward; Dahlia retaliated, and the Nolans killed Willem and concealed his body. When Constance discovers what happened, she has Dahlia seized and brutalizes her. Fiona’s apparent attempt to negotiate at the Van Ness estate is part of a larger assault by her family and allies. The estate burns, and Fiona and Constance confront each other inside it. TIME’s finale recap also describes the events that turn the dispute into a family conflict.

Who survives the fire?
The final image is a soot-covered figure emerging from the blaze. The episode does not identify the silhouette. Netflix Tudum calls the ending intentionally ambiguous, and executive producer Chris Keyser declined to name a survivor or confirm that only one person makes it out. He said, “Clearly, one person survives, maybe two people survive,” while leaving “which one that is, and whether it’s one or two” unresolved. The silhouette is not proof that Fiona or Constance has survived.
What the showdown says about Fiona and Constance
The series gives both women a rationale rooted in protecting family, but it does not make their methods morally equivalent to virtue. Fiona defends people with little power and the land she owns; that defense has also led her to lie, kill, cover up killings, damage an alliance, and use armed force. Constance argues that the mine is necessary to the town’s prosperity and sees herself as protecting her family and community, even as her pursuit crosses moral lines.

Keyser framed the conflict as a tension between “public responsibility and private rights.” He also said, “I don’t like stories that have completely obvious villains and completely obvious heroes.” Gillian Anderson described Constance’s conviction this way: “Constance believes she really has a righteous pursuit, and her righteous pursuit is as committed and as heartfelt as Fiona’s righteous religious pursuit.” Those comments explain why the fire reads less like a clean victory than the collision of two claims to protection and authority. What the finale leaves unresolved
Constance’s power and the Van Ness estate
The finale leaves Constance’s position badly damaged: her secret militia is exposed and decimated, her alliances fracture, her children scatter, and her estate burns. The silver mines are dwindling, weakening her ability to provide for her family and town. The series does not settle whether Constance survives or whether the Van Ness power structure can recover.

Elias and Trisha

No. TVLine reported on January 21, 2026, that Netflix canceled the series after one season, citing Deadline. Netflix’s official title listing contains seven episodes. Netflix’s listing for the series remains the place to find the released episodes; the cliffhanger has no Season 2 resolution in the announced series.
