The Warner Bros. logo is best understood as a long-running identity, not as one design that stayed unchanged for 90 years. Warner Bros. was incorporated on April 4, 1923, making 2013 its 90th-anniversary year. The WB shield has identified the studio’s films, television and content from 1923 onward, while its graphic form has been revised, replaced in some periods and later revived.
Why 2013 marks 90 years of Warner Bros.
Warner Bros. announced its incorporation date as April 4, 1923, in a 2012 anniversary announcement. That makes 2013 the studio’s 90th-anniversary year. The anniversary refers to the company’s history; it does not establish that a single, precisely documented version of the logo was created on the incorporation date.
Warner Bros. Discovery’s 2023 centennial announcement describes the WB Shield as identifying Warner Bros. films, television and content from 1923 to the present. That supports the shield’s long association with the studio, but it does not mean the shield’s outline, lettering or presentation remained constant throughout that span.
How the shield changed over time
The WB shield has served as a recognizable shorthand for the studio, but its history is not a simple sequence of permanent replacements. Pentagram, the design firm behind Warner Bros.’ 2019 identity update, notes that the shield was periodically updated and sometimes replaced, only to be resurrected in later versions.

The available accounts establish this pattern and describe the 2019 redesign, but they do not provide a complete, dated inventory of every logo version from 1923 through 2013. A precise year-by-year chronology would therefore require checking individual film and television marks or studio records. The broad story is clearer: the shield endured as an identity while its graphic treatment changed.
What changed in the 2019 redesign
Pentagram’s account describes a redesign intended to make the identity work better at small sizes and in digital contexts. The prior mark was highly detailed and difficult to use at those scales, so the team pared it back to core elements.
Rank #2
- A simpler shield: The redesign streamlined the shield and removed its sash.
- A more prominent monogram: The WB letters and shield became the central elements of the mark.
- Refined proportions and lettering: Pentagram says the shield’s proportions were informed by the golden ratio, while the letterforms were refined to preserve their distinctive character.
- A broader identity system: The project included a dimensional version for on-screen use and a custom typeface derived from the monogram.
These are choices Pentagram describes in its Warner Bros. identity project account. The update is a notable modern redesign, not proof that every on-screen Warner Bros. logo application adopted an identical version.
How to read the logo’s evolution
When comparing verified examples, look at the features that distinguish one treatment from another rather than assuming every image belongs to a fully documented annual sequence:

- Shield: Compare its outline and proportions.
- Sash: Note whether it appears and how it is treated.
- WB monogram: Examine the letterforms and their arrangement inside the shield.
- Rendering: Distinguish a flat graphic from a dimensional treatment.
- Context: Consider whether the mark serves a corporate identity, a small digital placement or an on-screen presentation.
These features help explain how the identity can feel familiar across different eras without every version being visually identical. They also make clear why an anniversary retrospective should distinguish the shield’s continuity from the changing designs built around it.

For its 2023 centennial, Warner Bros. Discovery described the WB Shield Collection as merchandise drawn from archival material. The announcement named apparel, accessories and home goods, and said the collection showed how the logo changed through the decades. This documents the collection’s categories at the time of the announcement; it does not establish that any particular item remains available now.
