There is no single objective ranking of Will Ferrell’s best films: a critic-score list, a funniest-movies list and a showcase of his acting range will produce different results. This ranking weighs the strength of Ferrell’s performance, the film and its ensemble, how well its comedy holds together, and what kind of viewing experience it offers. It includes leading roles, supporting performances and voice work, so the order is a recommendation—not a claim about universal consensus.
The 15 best Will Ferrell movies
-
The LEGO Movie (2014)
Ferrell is a supporting presence rather than the central comic lead, but his voice performance is essential to a film that keeps its playful world and its emotional stakes in balance. It makes the top spot because the movie’s inventive premise, brisk ensemble comedy and unexpectedly affecting story work together. Rotten Tomatoes ranked it first among the Ferrell-starring films in its August 6, 2025 guide, with a 96% Tomatometer score at the time that guide was accessed. That is a dated critics’ score, not a measure of audience preference.

Elf (2003)
As Buddy, a human raised by elves who brings wholehearted cheer to New York, Ferrell makes innocence funny without turning the character mean or cynical. The performance is the film’s engine, and the contrast between Buddy’s earnestness and the city’s impatience gives its holiday humor staying power. Rotten Tomatoes’ critic consensus calls it “a spirited, good-natured family comedy” that benefits from Ferrell’s funny, charming performance. Its August 2025 guide placed it third, at 85% on the Tomatometer.
-
Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004)
Ron Burgundy is Ferrell’s signature kind of creation: a man with absolute confidence and almost no grasp of how ridiculous he is. The film turns that self-seriousness into a whole newsroom of competing comic personalities, and its loose, quotable ensemble style is a major part of its appeal. It lands below the top two because its deliberately chaotic jokes are less consistent than the best films here, but few Ferrell performances are more closely identified with his screen persona. Rotten Tomatoes’ August 2025 guide ranked it fifteenth, with a 66% Tomatometer score at that time.

-
Step Brothers (2008)
Ferrell and John C. Reilly play overgrown, unemployed stepbrothers whose childish rivalry turns a newly blended family into a comic battleground. The movie depends on the leads’ committed chemistry: they treat petty competition with the intensity of a serious feud. It earns this high placement for the way that relationship sustains the joke beyond a string of outrageous moments, even if its broad humor will not suit every viewer.
-
The Other Guys (2010)
Here Ferrell makes restraint funny. His Detective Allen Gamble is an awkward, desk-bound foil to Mark Wahlberg’s volatile detective, and the mismatch lets the film parody action-cop bravado while still delivering the genre’s set pieces. Rotten Tomatoes’ consensus praises both the action and the pair’s comic chemistry; its August 2025 guide ranked the film fifth, with a 78% Tomatometer score at the time. It is one of Ferrell’s strongest ensemble performances because he plays the straight-faced half of the joke without losing his oddball edge.
-
Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby (2006)
Ferrell’s Ricky Bobby is a NASCAR star whose swagger is as fragile as it is loud. The film gets comic mileage from the gap between his self-image and his actual maturity, while the racing world gives the story a clear arena for rivalry and spectacle. It is a particularly good fit for viewers who want Ferrell in full-throttle character-comedy mode. Rotten Tomatoes’ August 2025 list placed it ninth, at 71% on the Tomatometer; the figure is a snapshot from that guide, not a permanent rating.
-
Stranger Than Fiction (2006)
One of Ferrell’s most valuable departures from his usual comic mode, this film casts him as Harold Crick, a meticulous tax auditor who begins hearing a narrator describe his life. He plays the premise with quiet precision, letting small shifts in routine and feeling carry the performance. The result is a comedy-drama built around vulnerability rather than loudness. Rotten Tomatoes described his turn as subdued; its August 2025 guide ranked the film seventh, with a 73% Tomatometer score when accessed.

Zoolander (2001)
As fashion mogul Jacobim Mugatu, Ferrell is a supporting player who makes every entrance feel like an event. His exaggerated vanity and theatrical temper complement the film’s send-up of fashion-world absurdity without crowding out its lead characters. It belongs here as a memorable example of how effectively Ferrell can sharpen an ensemble from the side, rather than carrying the story himself.
-
Old School (2003)
Ferrell’s Frank “The Tank” Ricard is an adult who discovers that youthful excess is not a stable life plan. His explosive party persona gives the film some of its biggest comic turns, while the friendship at its center keeps the story from being only a run of pranks. It is a strong supporting-role showcase and a useful snapshot of Ferrell’s early-2000s comedy persona.

-
Blades of Glory (2007)
Ferrell and Jon Heder play rival figure skaters forced into an unlikely pairs partnership. The premise gives Ferrell room for grandstanding and physical comedy, while the sports-spoof structure keeps the absurdity focused. It does not reach the character depth of his best films, but the odd-couple chemistry makes it one of his more durable genre-comedy vehicles.
-
Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga (2020)
Ferrell plays Lars, an Icelandic singer with an outsized dream and a stubborn refusal to give it up. The movie pairs affectionate musical spectacle with a comedy about ambition, friendship and the gap between wanting to be a star and being ready for the spotlight. Its sincere streak makes it a useful counterpoint to Ferrell’s more purely satirical roles.

Everything Must Go (2010)
In this quieter drama, Ferrell plays a recently fired man whose drinking and personal troubles come to a head when he finds his belongings on the lawn. The premise leaves room for an unusually sensitive performance, focused less on comic escalation than on a person trying to reckon with a life that has stalled. Rotten Tomatoes singled out the film as a more sensitive turn, making it an important choice for anyone asking about Ferrell’s range rather than his biggest laughs.
Rank #4
-
Daddy’s Home (2015)
Ferrell’s mild-mannered stepfather Brad is pushed into comic competition when the children’s charismatic biological father arrives. The film uses the clash between Brad’s careful niceness and the other man’s confidence as its central engine. It is a lighter, accessible pick for viewers looking for family-centered studio comedy, though its familiar rivalry premise keeps it below Ferrell’s more distinctive work.
-
Megamind (2010)
Ferrell voices the title character, a supervillain whose victory over his nemesis leaves him without the purpose his rivalry supplied. The animated superhero parody gives him a chance to make a theatrical character both ridiculous and unexpectedly sympathetic. Its premise and voice-led performance add welcome variety to a list otherwise dominated by live-action roles.
-
Wedding Crashers (2005)
Ferrell appears in a brief but memorable supporting role as Chazz Reinhold, a veteran wedding crasher who has taken the practice to an extreme. The cameo shows how sharply he can alter a film’s comic temperature with limited screen time. It ranks last here because it is not a substantial Ferrell showcase, not because the appearance lacks impact.

Why other rankings may put these films in a different order
A list built around critics’ scores will not necessarily match one built around laughs, leading performances or personal rewatch value. Rotten Tomatoes’ guide, published August 6, 2025, orders Ferrell-starring films by Tomatometer; it placed The LEGO Movie first, Elf third and Anchorman fifteenth in the snapshot used here. Those positions and scores belong to that guide and may change as reviews are added. TV Insider’s comedy-focused list, published July 15, 2026, also discusses films including Old School, Step Brothers, Zoolander, Everything Must Go, Stranger Than Fiction, Anchorman and Talladega Nights, illustrating how a list’s scope shapes its choices. Neither publication establishes a universal answer to which film is funniest or which contains Ferrell’s best performance.
