The best teen movies are not all set in American high schools: they include comedies, dramas, horror films and stories from around the world. This subjective selection treats “teen film” as a film that meaningfully explores adolescence—the passage from childhood to adulthood—rather than one that must meet a strict school-setting checklist. Filmmaker Charlie Lyne described that flexible approach in a BFI interview: “Our one criterion really was that a film needed to tackle in some way the idea of adolescence: the passage from childhood to adulthood.”

These 52 picks balance cultural and formal significance with the personal recognition that can make a film about growing up linger. They are not a universal ranking or a claim that one poll established a definitive canon. Use the guide to find a film by era, place, genre or mood—and check local ratings and content guidance before choosing one for a younger viewer.

How to use this list of the best teen movies of all time

The picks below are grouped by the kinds of stories and experiences they offer, not ranked from best to worst. “Teen movie” is a broad category: adolescence can be the subject of a film set at school, at home, in a community or in a place far removed from the familiar American high-school template.

The reference lists behind this guide serve different purposes. The BFI’s 10 great teen films is a cross-era critical selection. Its interview with Lyne explores how personal memory and national context can affect which films connect with viewers. The BFI and Into Film’s 2020 list for viewers up to age 15 is an educational guide, updated from a 2005 list and organized to broaden young viewers’ film experience—not a ranking of the greatest films. And Rotten Tomatoes’ 70 Best High School Movies of All Time, updated September 3, 2025, orders eligible Fresh and Certified Fresh films by Tomatometer score and requires at least 20 critic reviews per film. That is one outlet’s review-based method, not a neutral measure of quality.

Foundational classics and school stories

  1. If… (1968, United Kingdom)

Lindsay Anderson’s boarding-school satire turns youthful rebellion into an attack on institutional authority. Its controlled setting gives the defiance an unsettling, formally daring edge.

  2. American Graffiti (1973, United States)

George Lucas’s ensemble follows young people through one night of cruising, music and uncertain decisions. Its affectionate portrait of a changing youth culture makes it as much a social snapshot as a coming-of-age story.

  3. Carrie (1976, United States)

Brian De Palma’s horror film centers on a bullied teenager, religious control and the violence of public humiliation. The supernatural climax gives adolescent cruelty a tragic, frightening scale.

  4. Gregory’s Girl (1981, United Kingdom)

Bill Forsyth’s gentle comedy observes school crushes and awkward self-consciousness with unusual warmth. Its low-key humor is a welcome counterpoint to teen stories built around dramatic reinvention.

  5. Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982, United States)

This ensemble comedy follows students navigating sex, work, friendship and school. Its candor about ordinary teenage misjudgments helped make it a touchstone of American high-school cinema.

  6. À nos amours (1983, France)

Maurice Pialat’s drama offers a sharp, unsentimental portrait of a young woman negotiating intimacy and family conflict. Its emotional openness makes it a striking alternative to the neat lessons often imposed on coming-of-age films.

  7. The Breakfast Club (1985, United States)

Five students from different school cliques spend a Saturday in detention and reveal the pressures behind their public identities. Its compact setting makes it a particularly clear study of how teenagers perform—and revise—who they are.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  8. Heathers (1988, United States)

Michael Lehmann’s pitch-black high-school comedy skewers popularity, conformity and cruelty. Its satire is deliberately dark, so it is a poor choice for viewers expecting a light school comedy.

  9. Dead Poets Society (1989, United States)

At a strict boys’ school, an unconventional teacher encourages students to think for themselves and take their ambitions seriously. The film balances the exhilaration of intellectual awakening with the weight of institutional and family expectations.

  10. Clueless (1995, United States)

A clever, generous comedy about status, friendship and learning to see beyond one’s own assumptions. Cher’s transformation is less about abandoning popularity than becoming more attentive to other people.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  12. 10 Things I Hate About You (1999, United States)

This romantic comedy gives its high-school characters sharp voices and conflicting desires, rather than treating romance as a simple prize. Its playful energy makes it an accessible pick for viewers who want a witty school story.

  13. Almost Famous (2000, United States)

Cameron Crowe’s semi-autobiographical drama follows a teenage music writer on tour with a rock band. It captures the thrill of entering an adult world while showing how easily admiration can blur into self-deception.

  14. Mean Girls (2004, United States)

A sharp comedy about social belonging, imitation and the costs of turning friendship into a popularity contest. Its humor works both as a high-school farce and as a critique of the hierarchies its characters help maintain.

Growing up beyond the American high school

  1. Show Me Love (Fucking Åmål) (1998, Sweden)

Lukas Moodysson’s tender, funny drama follows two teenage girls in a small Swedish town as they contend with isolation, desire and the fear of being known. Its specificity gives the romance emotional force without making adolescence seem universal or interchangeable.

  2. Whale Rider (2002, New Zealand)

A young Māori girl struggles to be recognized as a leader within her community and family. The film brings a coming-of-age arc into conversation with cultural inheritance and gender expectations.

  3. Osama (2003, Afghanistan)

Set under Taliban rule, Siddiq Barmak’s drama follows a girl forced to disguise herself as a boy to survive. Its focus on childhood and adolescence under political oppression makes it powerful but emotionally difficult viewing.

  4. Water Lilies (2007, France)

Céline Sciamma’s debut observes friendship, desire and self-image among teenage girls on a synchronized-swimming team. Its close attention to the uncertainty of wanting—and being wanted—feels unusually precise.

  5. Fish Tank (2009, United Kingdom)

Andrea Arnold’s drama follows a volatile teenager in a difficult home and a housing-estate environment. Its naturalistic style is immersive, and its mature situations make it better suited to older viewers.

  6. Boy (2010, New Zealand)

Taika Waititi’s comedy-drama sees a young Māori boy build an imagined version of his absent father, then confront the person who returns. Humor and tenderness sit alongside the pain of disappointment.

  7. We Are the Best! (2013, Sweden)

Three girls form a punk band in 1980s Stockholm, discovering friendship and creative confidence in the process. It is a lively reminder that teenage self-expression can be messy, funny and collective.

  11. System Crasher (2019, Germany)

Funny, romantic and bittersweet coming-of-age films

  1. Rushmore (1998, United States)

Wes Anderson’s comedy follows an ambitious, socially inept student whose extracurricular confidence exceeds his judgment. Its deadpan tone makes youthful grandiosity funny without denying its loneliness.

  2. Juno (2007, United States)

A quick-witted teenager faces an unplanned pregnancy and the complicated decisions around it. The film’s comic voice is distinctive, while the subject calls for maturity and care rather than assuming the story is light viewing.

  3. Submarine (2010, United Kingdom)

Richard Ayoade’s stylized comedy follows a teenage boy trying to manage first love and his parents’ troubles. Its awkwardness and self-conscious narration capture the gap between how a young person imagines life and how it feels.

Teenagers in horror, fantasy and animation

  1. The Craft (1996, United States)

  2. Donnie Darko (2001, United States)

Richard Kelly’s cult film combines teenage alienation with science-fiction mystery and surreal dread. Its deliberately ambiguous story rewards viewers who enjoy puzzling over a film rather than receiving a tidy explanation.

  3. Let the Right One In (2008, Sweden)

A lonely boy forms a bond with a mysterious neighbor in this chilly vampire story. Its quiet attention to isolation and cruelty distinguishes it from more action-driven horror, though the violence and bleakness make it unsuitable for many younger viewers.

  4. Jennifer’s Body (2009, United States)

A horror comedy turns a friendship between teenage girls into a story of desire, betrayal and supernatural violence. Its genre wit does not soften the mature content.

Documentary and reality-rooted portraits

  1. Hoop Dreams (1994, United States)

  2. Spellbound (2002, United States)

Jeffrey Blitz’s documentary follows young contestants preparing for the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Competition provides the structure, but the film’s appeal lies in the different personalities, families and hopes behind the event.

  3. Girl Model (2011, United States/Japan)

This documentary examines the fashion industry through a young model recruited in Siberia and the adults who guide her career. Its focus on power and vulnerability makes it a serious, mature-minded watch rather than an uncomplicated portrait of teenage ambition.

  4. First Position (2011, United States)

Bess Kargman’s documentary follows young ballet dancers competing for a place in the professional world. It captures discipline and drive while leaving room to consider the pressure placed on talented children and teens.

  5. Midnight Family (2019, Mexico)

Luke Lorentzen’s documentary follows a family operating a private ambulance in Mexico City. A teenager’s place in the family’s work provides a vivid view of responsibility in a world shaped by inadequate public services; its emergency scenes can be intense.

Choosing a teen movie by mood—and by viewer

For a sharp school comedy, start with Clueless, Election or Booksmart. For a tender first-love story, try Gregory’s Girl, Show Me Love or Whisper of the Heart. If you want a story about institutions and resistance, consider If…, Mustang or Osama. For a documentary portrait of young people facing pressures beyond school, choose Hoop Dreams, First Position or Midnight Family.

For age suitability, use the classification and content guidance for the specific film in your country, rather than relying on its genre or the fact that its central characters are young. The American Film Institute’s educational discussion of Thirteen notes its coming-of-age subject alongside mature material and an R rating; it is a useful reminder that subject matter and suitability are separate questions. The AFI’s discussion of Thirteen is not a substitute for local ratings or family judgment.

How this list differs from other best high school movies lists

The American Film Institute’s Back to School Movie Guide includes films such as American Graffiti, Carrie, CODA, Dead Poets Society, Eighth Grade, Fame and Fast Times at Ridgemont High; AFI also notes selected award and list recognition for some titles. Rotten Tomatoes’ high-school list, by contrast, uses a critic-score method and minimum review threshold. Neither list is the same thing as an all-purpose canon. Here, some films matter for their formal or cultural significance, while others earn their place through the sharpness of their emotional recognition.
