TechRadar’s 52 best movies of 2024 is a critic’s selection by writer Tom Power, not an objective ranking or a scored list. Published on December 29, 2024, the guide groups films by the streaming service where they launched or later arrived, then adds a “best of the rest” section. Its platform labels describe the guide’s original context—not a guarantee that a film is available there now or in every country.
What TechRadar’s 2024 list is—and isn’t
Power’s feature brings together 52 films he considered the year’s best. It does not publish a scoring system or claim that the films are ordered by a measurable standard. Treat it as one writer’s editorial shortlist: useful for discovering acclaimed or popular releases, but not a definitive consensus ranking.
The choices are justified in different ways. Power discusses filmmaking, performances, scripts, genre craft, emotional impact and audience appeal. Some entries also take account of commercial success. Those reasons explain his selections; they should not be mistaken for independent audience measurements or universal critical agreement.
How the films are grouped
The guide sorts films by streaming platform, using a film’s launch service or the service it later reached. A closing “best of the rest” group covers films associated with other services or not yet streaming at the time. Representative titles in the feature include:
#1 Best Overall
| Guide section or platform | Examples named in the feature |
|---|---|
| Apple TV+ | Fancy Dance; Killers of the Flower Moon |
| Disney+ | A Real Pain; Deadpool & Wolverine; Inside Out 2; Moana 2; Out of My Mind |
| Hulu | Alien: Romulus; Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes |
| Max | Challengers; Dune: Part Two; Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story |
| Netflix | The Beautiful Game; Hit Man; Joy; Rebel Ridge; Rez Ball; Society of the Snow; Ultraman: Rising |
| Paramount+ | A Quiet Place: Day One; Better Man; Transformers One |
| Peacock | Despicable Me 4 |
| Prime Video | The Idea of You; Música; My Old Ass; Road House |
| Best of the rest | Love Lies Bleeding; Paddington in Peru; The Substance, among other films and honorable mentions |
These are examples, not a complete transcription of all 52 picks. The platform names are historical signposts from a December 2024 feature. Streaming rights and catalogs change, and availability can differ by country; check the service catalog in your region before planning a watch.
What the selections say about the year
Big releases and ambitious genre films
Power praises Dune: Part Two for carrying forward the earlier film’s abstract science fiction while balancing action and family drama. That is an editorial assessment of how the sequel works, rather than a claim that every viewer will respond to its style in the same way.
Rank #2
- The Help (Three-Disc Combo: Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy)
The range of examples also places franchise and genre releases alongside less conventional choices: the list includes superhero, animation, science fiction, horror, romance and drama titles. The guide’s service-based organization makes it a viewing-oriented roundup, not a genre-by-genre comparison.
Documentary and dramatic storytelling
Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story appears among the Max examples, showing that the selection is not limited to fiction films. The feature’s varied rationale—craft, performance and emotional effect—also leaves room for films whose appeal is not captured by box-office results alone.

Commercial performance is one factor, not the ranking method
In discussing Despicable Me 4, Power acknowledges mixed critical reception and points in part to its reported commercial success. His December 29, 2024 article gives a worldwide box-office figure of $968 million. That figure is what the feature reported at publication; it is not presented here as a separately verified current total or as proof of critical consensus.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the platform labels should not be used as a current watchlist
The feature was published on December 29, 2024, and reflects availability and release context at that time. It noted, for example, that A Real Pain had not yet arrived on Disney+; described Love Lies Bleeding as available on Max in the US and Prime Video in the UK and Australia; and included films that were still in theaters. Those are dated statements, not current catalog guidance.
Rank #4
- On November 1, 2024, THE CURE's widely acclaimed Grammy-nominated album `SONGS OF A LOST WORLD' was released
For a present-day viewing decision, search the film title in the streaming apps available to you or consult a current regional catalog listing. Do not assume that a service name in the 2024 guide means the title is still included with a subscription, available in your country, or streaming rather than offered through a separate rental or purchase.
Quick Recap
How to use the list
- For a broad starting point: use the 52 picks as a single critic’s snapshot of notable 2024 releases, not a definitive ranking.
- To find a particular kind of film: use the named examples to identify possible starting points, then check the full TechRadar feature for its complete selection and individual commentary.
- Before choosing where to watch: verify current availability in your region, since the platform grouping records the feature’s historical release or later-arrival context.
