The 40 Best Crime Movies of All Time

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no universally accepted top 40 crime movies: rankings use different rules, and a member-rating chart is not the same thing as a critical selection. This is a curated guide, not a claim of objective order. It treats a film as crime cinema when crime drives its plot, characters, investigation, victims, or consequences—not only when it is a gangster story. Heists, noir, detective films, police dramas, criminal character studies, and crime epics all belong. The picks below balance eras, countries, styles, and points of view; each has a particular strength that makes it worth seeking out.

For a quick choice, browse the short descriptions for the kind of experience you want. The list includes fictional stories and crime films inspired by real cases; neither category is presented as a documentary account.

How to choose a crime movie

  • For a tightly engineered robbery: start with Rififi, The Asphalt Jungle, or Le cercle rouge.
  • For noir and bad decisions: try Double Indemnity, Out of the Past, or Blood Simple.
  • For investigation and uncertainty: choose M, Rashomon, High and Low, or Zodiac.
  • For a criminal life seen from the inside: consider Pickpocket, Goodfellas, or Un prophète.
  • For a crime story shaped by family or society: try The Godfather, Rocco and His Brothers, or City of God.

These are entry points, not a replacement ranking: films in different subgenres are being valued for different things.

The 40 best crime movies

  1. The Godfather (1972)

Crime epic · United States · family perspective
A measured portrait of power turning into inheritance, with crime embedded in family life rather than treated as a string of set pieces. Its controlled performances and moral corrosion make it an essential starting point. One composite ranking by History of Movies places it first under that publisher’s method; that is one method, not a universal verdict.

    #1 Best Overall
  2. M (1931)

Police procedural and social thriller · Germany · investigation and community
A child-murder investigation becomes a study of public fear, institutional limits, and a city mobilized by suspicion. Its shifting attention between police and criminals gives the hunt an unsettling social dimension.

  3. Rififi (1955)

Heist · France · criminal crew
The robbery is a masterclass in suspense built from physical process and near-silence. BFI describes its central heist sequence as 30 minutes and identifies the film as a subgenre gold standard. BFI also reports that François Truffaut called it “the best crime film I’ve ever seen” on its release.

  4. Double Indemnity (1944)

Film noir · United States · accomplices and fatal choices
A murder plot becomes a tightening trap of desire, calculation, and self-deception. Its appeal is not simply the crime’s mechanics, but the sense that the people planning it have already begun to lose control.

  5. The Asphalt Jungle (1950)

Heist noir · United States · a criminal team
The film makes the planning and execution of a robbery as gripping as its aftermath, while giving each participant a different stake in the scheme. BFI discusses its nearly scoreless heist sequence as an approach that influenced later crime filmmaking.

  6. Rashomon (1950)

Murder mystery · Japan · conflicting witnesses
A killing is recounted from four perspectives, turning the investigation into a challenge to certainty itself. BFI describes it as a murder story told from four points of view; its narrative design remains a powerful reason to watch.

  7. Pickpocket (1959)

Criminal character study · France · a petty thief
Robert Bresson makes the rhythms and gestures of theft the material of an interior portrait. BFI describes the film as a study of a petty thief; its spare form invites attention to the distance between observation and moral understanding.

  8. Touch of Evil (1958)

Police noir · United States · law and corruption
A border-town investigation becomes a volatile contest over authority and trust. The film’s expressive visual style is inseparable from its uneasy question: what happens when the people enforcing the law bend it?

  9. Out of the Past (1947)

Noir · United States · an ex-detective pulled back in
Its crime story moves through lies, old loyalties, and the pull of a past that cannot be cleanly escaped. The fatalism feels earned because every attempt at a fresh start carries the history of earlier compromises.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  10. The Killing (1956)

Heist noir · United States · a plan unraveling
A racetrack robbery is shaped by intersecting motives and a deliberately fractured timeline. The pleasure lies in watching a supposedly precise plan meet the unpredictability of its participants.

  11. High and Low (1963)

Procedural crime drama · Japan · investigators and a victim’s family
A kidnapping case puts moral obligation, class, and police procedure under pressure. BFI identifies it as a procedural crime film; its attention to consequences gives the investigation unusual human weight.

  12. The Godfather Part II (1974)

Crime epic · United States · family across generations
By setting the rise of one generation beside the isolation of another, it turns a gangster saga into a study of how power is acquired and what it costs to keep. Its parallel structure makes the family’s transformation the drama’s central mechanism.

  13. Serpico (1973)

Police drama · United States · an individual inside a compromised institution
This portrait of a cop resisting corruption gives the genre a perspective beyond criminals and detectives solving cases. Its central tension comes from the personal cost of refusing to accept a system’s habits.

  14. Chinatown (1974)

    Neo-noir investigation · United States · a private detective
A seemingly contained case opens onto a wider structure of influence and concealment. The detective’s investigation is compelling partly because learning more does not mean gaining control.

  15. Dog Day Afternoon (1975)

Crime drama · United States · a botched robbery and its public audience
A bank robbery becomes a volatile negotiation among the people inside, the crowd outside, and the authorities. Its shifting tone and attention to public spectacle keep the film from becoming a simple story of criminal bravado.

  16. The French Connection (1971)

Police procedural · United States · investigators
The pursuit of a drug-smuggling operation is driven by restless observation and relentless momentum. It is an influential example of crime cinema built around police work and the physical strain of a hunt.

  17. Taxi Driver (1976)

Crime-adjacent character study · United States · an isolated observer
Crime and violence matter to the story, but its defining focus is a disturbed man’s increasingly distorted view of the city. It earns its place for showing how a crime film can locate danger in a character’s perception as much as in an investigation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  18. Once Upon a Time in America (1984)

Crime epic · Italy and United States · a criminal circle remembered
A sprawling, nonlinear account of friendship, ambition, and betrayal gives the gangster film the scale of a memory piece. Its fragmented structure makes recollection itself part of the crime story.

  19. Blood Simple (1984)

Neo-noir · United States · a plot of suspicion and misread intentions
A small web of betrayal grows more dangerous as people act on incomplete knowledge. Its grim humor and tight construction show how a modest crime premise can generate sustained dread.

  20. Manhunter (1986)

Serial-crime investigation · United States · an investigator’s point of view
The pursuit of a serial killer is filtered through the investigator’s imagination and psychological exposure. Its stylized approach makes the act of understanding a criminal feel as risky as following the evidence.

  21. Goodfellas (1990)

Gangster film · United States · an insider’s account
Fast narration and propulsive editing make criminal life feel seductive before the costs of that life take over. Its strength is the contrast between the energy of belonging and the instability of the world the characters have chosen.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  22. The Silence of the Lambs (1991)

Investigation and psychological thriller · United States · an FBI trainee
A serial-killer case is also a story about observation, expertise, and the power imbalance between investigator and incarcerated source. Its suspense depends on conversation as much as pursuit.

  23. Unforgiven (1992)

Crime western · United States · violence and its aftermath
A lawless setting lets the film interrogate the myths people tell about violent men. It belongs on a broad crime list because its central concern is not frontier spectacle but the lasting consequences of killing.

  24. Heat (1995)

Heist and police drama · United States · criminals and investigators
The film gives the professional lives of a robbery crew and the people pursuing them comparable seriousness. Its careful attention to opposed routines makes the collision between the two sides more than a simple chase.

  25. Fargo (1996)

Crime comedy · United States · investigator and hapless offenders
A botched kidnapping is treated with deadpan humor without losing sight of the violence it unleashes. The contrast between ordinary manners and criminal catastrophe gives the film its distinctive tone.

  26. Cure (1997)

Crime mystery · Japan · a detective confronting unexplained murders
An investigation into a series of killings becomes an atmosphere of disorientation rather than a tidy puzzle. Its restraint and ambiguity make it a distinctive crime film for viewers who prefer unease to neat answers.

  27. L.A. Confidential (1997)

Police noir · United States · a trio of officers
Multiple officers pursue intersecting cases in a story that makes institutional image and private ambition part of the mystery. Its ensemble design lets different ideas of justice collide.

  28. City of God (2002)

Crime epic · Brazil · a community and its young residents
Its kinetic storytelling follows violence as a force shaping a neighborhood, not just the fortunes of one gang. That social scale makes it a vital counterweight to crime films centered solely on powerful criminals.

  29. Memories of Murder (2003)

Crime investigation · South Korea · detectives and a community
The search for a killer is as much about the investigators’ limitations as about evidence. Its shifts in tone and attention to frustration make the case feel consequential even when certainty remains elusive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  30. Oldboy (2003)

Revenge thriller · South Korea · a captive seeking answers
A crime mystery drives an extreme story of confinement, revenge, and revelation. Its force comes from the way its formal audacity serves the protagonist’s narrowing obsession.

  31. Infernal Affairs (2002)

Undercover crime thriller · Hong Kong · two men embedded on opposing sides
Its mirrored undercover setup turns identity and loyalty into the central suspense engine. The result is a crime film whose tension comes from maintaining a false life as much as from the danger of discovery.

  32. Eastern Promises (2007)

Organized-crime drama · United Kingdom and Canada · a witness and a hidden world
A woman’s effort to understand a death leads into a criminal network whose codes govern both violence and belonging. The film’s measured approach gives its human stakes room alongside its brutal underworld.

  33. A Prophet (2009)

Prison crime drama · France · an incarcerated newcomer
Rather than treating prison as a backdrop, the film makes it the environment in which a young man learns to navigate power. Its patient character development offers a striking account of adaptation and ambition.

  34. The Secret in Their Eyes (2009)

Investigation and drama · Argentina · a case revisited
A murder investigation and the later act of remembering it intertwine love, justice, and the persistence of unresolved harm. Its structure gives the emotional afterlife of a case equal importance to solving it.

  35. Drive (2011)

Neo-noir and crime thriller · United States · a getaway driver
A quiet, guarded protagonist is drawn into a robbery’s fallout. The film’s stylized restraint makes bursts of violence feel abrupt, while its mood gives the crime story a distinctive, dreamlike edge.

  36. Prisoners (2013)

Kidnapping investigation · United States · families and detectives
A missing-children case tests the boundary between the search for justice and the urge to take revenge. Its divided perspective keeps the emotional consequences in view alongside the procedural mystery.

  37. Nightcrawler (2014)

Crime-adjacent media thriller · United States · an opportunistic observer
Crime scenes become material for a man pursuing success by filming and selling images of violence. The film widens the genre’s focus to include the appetite that surrounds crime, not just the act itself.

  38. Hell or High Water (2016)

Modern western and crime drama · United States · robbers and a lawman
A series of bank robberies links a suspenseful pursuit to economic pressure and family loyalty. Its restrained storytelling makes the social context part of the crime’s meaning rather than a detachable explanation.

  39. Uncut Gems (2019)

    Crime thriller · United States · a compulsive risk-taker
A jewelry dealer’s overlapping obligations and bets produce almost continuous pressure. Its chaotic pace makes bad judgment feel like the engine of the plot, not an obstacle the characters can simply overcome.

  40. Decision to Leave (2022)

Detective noir · South Korea · a detective and a suspect
A death investigation develops into a story of attraction, suspicion, and interpretation. Its elegant control of point of view makes the uncertainty between investigator and suspect the source of its pull.

How this selection differs from a ranking chart

“Best” depends on what a list measures. Letterboxd’s Top 250 Crime Films, marked as of June 18, 2026, ranks average member ratings and sets its own eligibility rules: a 3,000-rating minimum, the crime genre tag, feature-length films over 40 minutes with specified release routes, and exclusions including documentaries, television works, and stage works. History of Movies describes its list as a composite of more than 20 lists, awards, and polls. Those are useful, distinct inputs—not a settled answer to which films belong in a top 40.

This selection uses a broader editorial test: crime must materially shape the film, but the film need not fit one narrow genre label. That allows noir, comedies, police stories, international cinema, and hybrids whose central concern is the harm or pressure crime creates. Some films resist a clean label: BFI calls Rocco and His Brothers an ancestor of later crime epics while noting that its crime is “badly disorganised.” Genre boundaries can illuminate a film, but they should not decide its worth.

Finding a place to watch

Availability changes by title and territory. JustWatch’s guide is US-specific and says it checked 373 services on October 2, 2026; that service count is not a guarantee that any particular film is available. Check the title’s current US listing before choosing a stream, rental, or purchase. BFI Player also has a crime collection, but its existence alone does not establish availability elsewhere.

For collectors, Criterion has a crime catalog with a Blu-ray format path, including titles such as Le cercle rouge (France, 1970), M (Germany, 1931), Cure (Japan, 1997), and Blood Simple (United States, 1984). A catalog entry does not establish that every film on this list has a Criterion edition. Confirm the exact film, edition, and region compatibility before buying.
