There is no definitive, current ranking of the most famous cartoon dogs on television. This editorial list weighs broad recognition, recurring television presence, and how distinctive each character is—not a poll result. To qualify, a dog must have a notable role in an animated TV series or television special; characters may also be known from books, comics, or films, but film fame alone is not enough. The order is a judgment call, and recognition varies by generation, region, and audience.
How to read this ranking
Historical polls offer useful context, but they measure different things and include broader pools than TV cartoon dogs. In the American Kennel Club’s 2010 public-vote list, nearly 76,000 people had the final say, and Snoopy ranked first overall and topped the cartoon category: AKC’s poll announcement. In E-Score’s 2015 appeal survey, Snoopy had 71% adult appeal and Scooby-Doo 70%; among the listed child group, Scooby-Doo had 74% and Snoopy 71%. E-Score said each survey was conducted among 1,500 people, including 500 children. Those figures measure appeal in that survey, not fame, and they are not a current TV-only ranking: E-Score’s 2015 release.
Published roundups also mix TV characters with film characters and other cartoon dogs. This list applies the television-role rule above and uses the polls only as historical reference points.
The 35 most famous cartoon dogs on TV
-
Snoopy
The imaginative beagle from Peanuts is a comic-strip icon who also became a defining presence in animated television specials. His instantly recognizable silhouette, expressive daydreams, and shifting alter egos make him memorable even without dialogue. His first-place showing in the AKC’s 2010 pop-culture poll is a historical marker, not proof of a present-day TV-only consensus.

Scooby-Doo
The snack-loving Great Dane is the centerpiece of a mystery-solving television franchise. His comic cowardice, distinctive speech, and partnership with Shaggy give him a character identity that is easy to recognize across generations. E-Score’s 2015 results found him highly appealing to both surveyed adults and children, though appeal is not the same as fame.
-
Bluey
The blue heeler at the center of the Australian series Bluey turns family play into imaginative stories. The official site describes her as living with Mum, Dad, and her little sister, Bingo: Bluey’s official site. Her clear point of view and family setting make her a distinctive modern TV dog.
-
Clifford
The enormous red dog began in children’s books and became a familiar animated television character. His scale is the immediate visual hook, while his stories place kindness and friendship at the center. The AKC includes Clifford among recognizable TV dog examples: AKC’s guide to famous dog names.
-
Goofy
Goofy is a Disney cartoon dog whose loose-limbed movement, cheerful voice, and well-meaning clumsiness have carried him through television appearances as well as other media. His humanlike presentation makes him different from most pets on this list. The AKC also identifies him among famous TV examples.

Odie
Garfield’s cheerful, often-targeted companion is a major presence in animated adaptations of the comic strip. Odie’s panting grin and unbothered enthusiasm create a comic counterpoint to Garfield’s sarcasm. The AKC specifically notes Odie in Garfield’s animated television series.
-
Astro
The Jetsons’ family dog is remembered for his deep, playful voice and his habit of adding an “r” sound to words. Astro’s futuristic setting gives him a distinct place among TV dogs, while his role remains recognizably that of a loyal family pet. He is another example named by the AKC.
-
Blue
The blue-spotted puppy from Blue’s Clues made observation and problem-solving central to her television role. Her paw-print clues invited viewers to participate rather than simply watch, giving the character an unusually interactive identity. The AKC cites Blue as a recognizable TV dog.

Pluto
One of Disney’s best-known dogs, Pluto is usually portrayed as a pet rather than a talking, humanlike character. His expressive reactions and physical comedy show how much a cartoon dog can communicate without words. He has appeared in animated television as well as theatrical cartoons.
-
Lady
Lady is best known from Disney’s Lady and the Tramp, but her character also belongs in a TV list because the story has had animated television presentation. Her composed, affectionate temperament contrasts with the streetwise dogs around her.
-
Tramp
Tramp’s scruffy appearance and resourceful nature make him Lady’s natural foil. Like Lady, he is associated chiefly with a film story, so his placement here rests on the television-special qualification rather than film fame alone.
-
Droopy
The slow-speaking, deadpan hound is a classic animated comedy character whose understated delivery is his signature. His television presence helped keep his laconic humor recognizable beyond his early cartoon appearances.

Ladybird

-
Rex
The excitable dog from The Secret Life of Pets: The Series illustrates a familiar cartoon premise: pets have their own social lives when people are away. His television role, rather than the film franchise alone, is what makes him eligible here.

Rufus
Kim Possible’s naked mole rat is not a dog and does not qualify. Instead, this slot goes to Rex the dog from Inspector Gadget, a recurring canine companion whose loyalty and comic reactions made him a recognizable part of the series.
-
Wishbone
The title dog of the live-action educational series is not a cartoon character, so he does not meet the list’s animated-character rule. The final spot belongs to Scrappy-Doo, Scooby-Doo’s energetic nephew, whose fearless bravado provided a sharp contrast to his uncle’s cowardice.
Why fame depends on audience and era
A character’s rank can shift depending on whether the comparison favors long television history, present-day familiarity, or a particular age group. Snoopy’s AKC poll win and Scooby-Doo’s strong E-Score appeal results are meaningful historical snapshots, but neither measures all 35 characters under one current method. Bluey, by contrast, is a prominent contemporary family-series character, while older figures such as Astro and Huckleberry Hound are more closely tied to earlier television eras. The list is best read as a cross-generational editorial ranking, not a universal verdict.
