These feature films all run for less than 90 minutes, but none feels like a compromise: the list ranges from silent cinema and documentary to comedy, horror, animation and international drama. The ranking is subjective, weighing reputation and craft, how purposefully each film uses its brief runtime, accessibility, and the variety of experiences across the list—not treating minutes as a measure of quality. Runtime listings can vary by release and credits convention, so check the edition you plan to watch, especially near the 90-minute cutoff. This is a ranked selection, not a claim of a universal canon.

The 35 best movies under 90 minutes

  1. Man with a Movie Camera (1929) — 67 minutes

Dziga Vertov’s silent documentary is a dazzling experiment in how cinema sees. Its rapid edits, split screens and camera tricks turn a day in a Soviet city into a celebration of filmmaking itself. It tops this list for sheer formal invention: a century later, its visual ideas still feel alive.

  2. The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928) — 80 minutes

Carl Theodor Dreyer builds an emotionally overwhelming film from close-ups, stark sets and Renée Falconetti’s extraordinary performance. The silent format intensifies rather than limits the drama; every face and gesture carries weight.

  3. Bicycle Thieves (1948) — 89 minutes

Vittorio De Sica’s neorealist drama follows a father and son searching postwar Rome for a stolen bicycle. Its simple premise opens into a humane portrait of poverty, pride and the bond between parent and child. At 89 minutes, it is eligible under a strict under-90 rule, though runtime listings can differ by version.

  4. Modern Times (1936) — 87 minutes

Charlie Chaplin’s Little Tramp confronts factory work, hunger and a mechanized society in a comedy whose physical gags remain astonishingly precise. The film’s social criticism never weighs down its visual playfulness.

  5. Rashomon (1950) — 88 minutes

Akira Kurosawa’s landmark mystery revisits a violent encounter through conflicting accounts. Its shifting perspectives make the audience an active judge, while bold camerawork and performances keep the question of truth riveting.

  6. Duck Soup (1933) — 68 minutes

The Marx Brothers’ anarchic political comedy turns a tiny fictional nation into a playground for insults, absurdity and gleeful disorder. At 68 minutes, it wastes no time—and its best routines still land with startling force.

  7. Pickpocket (1959) — 76 minutes

Robert Bresson’s spare drama follows a young thief whose practiced hands and isolation become inseparable. Rather than glamorize crime, the film uses restrained performances and close attention to movement to explore compulsion and connection.

  8. My Neighbor Totoro (1988) — 86 minutes

Hayao Miyazaki’s gentle animated fantasy finds wonder in two sisters’ encounters with the forest spirit Totoro. Its appeal lies in patient observation and warmth, not a race through plot beats; it is an ideal choice when you want a short film that feels restorative.

  9. A Hard Day’s Night (1964) — 87 minutes

The Beatles play mischievous versions of themselves in a brisk, witty comedy that doubles as a burst of pop energy. Richard Lester’s nimble editing and playful camera work make the musical sequences feel as fresh as the jokes.

  10. Laura (1944) — 88 minutes

Otto Preminger’s stylish noir begins with a detective investigating a woman’s apparent murder and keeps reshaping what the viewer thinks they know. Its atmosphere, sharp dialogue and memorable central mystery make it an inviting entry point into classic crime cinema.

  11. The Producers (1967) — 88 minutes

Mel Brooks’s outrageous comedy follows two schemers who try to profit from a deliberately doomed Broadway show. The premise lets Brooks skewer show-business vanity with escalating absurdity and fearless comic timing.

  12. Office Space (1999) — 89 minutes

Mike Judge’s workplace satire distills office malaise into a string of painfully recognizable indignities and wonderfully deadpan payoffs. It works as both an ensemble comedy and a pointed send-up of corporate routine.

  13. Frances Ha (2012) — 86 minutes

Noah Baumbach’s black-and-white comedy-drama follows a drifting dancer through friendship, ambition and the awkward transitions of adulthood. Greta Gerwig gives Frances an endearing mix of confidence and uncertainty, and the film’s lightness makes its emotional turns feel earned.

  14. Rope (1948) — 80 minutes

Alfred Hitchcock’s chamber thriller traps a dinner party inside the aftermath of a murder. Its tightly confined setting and long, carefully choreographed takes create mounting tension while the guests circle the secret at the center of the room.

  15. What We Do in the Shadows (2014) — 86 minutes

Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi’s mockumentary follows vampire roommates dealing with chores, housemates and the modern world. The documentary-style interviews make supernatural absurdity feel hilariously mundane.

  16. Breathless (1960) — 87 minutes

Jean-Luc Godard’s French New Wave crime film follows a reckless young man and the American woman who may or may not stay with him. Jump cuts, location shooting and a loose, talkative rhythm make the form part of the film’s youthful attitude.

  17. El Mariachi (1992) — 81 minutes

Robert Rodriguez’s lean action thriller follows a traveling musician mistaken for a dangerous gunman. Its low-budget ingenuity and propulsive setup give it the feel of a compact, self-contained adventure.

  18. Shiva Baby (2020) — 77 minutes

Emma Seligman’s comedy traps a young woman at a crowded shiva where family scrutiny, an ex and an unexpected encounter collide. The confined setting and escalating social discomfort turn a short gathering into a pressure-cooker farce.

  19. Before Sunset (2004) — 80 minutes

Richard Linklater’s romantic drama reunites Jesse and Céline for a walk and conversation in Paris. Its nearly real-time structure makes every pause, digression and change of subject matter; the result is intimate without feeling small.

  20. The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) — 76 minutes

Henry Selick’s stop-motion fantasy follows Halloween Town’s Pumpkin King as he tries to take over Christmas. The handcrafted animation, memorable songs and gently macabre humor make it a distinctive seasonal favorite rather than a conventional holiday story.

  21. Ghost in the Shell (1995) — 82 minutes

Mamoru Oshii’s animated science-fiction film follows a cyborg investigator probing a hacker who can manipulate identity and memory. Its atmospheric cityscapes and philosophical questions give its action a lingering afterlife.

  22. Paranormal Activity (2007) — 86 minutes

Oren Peli’s found-footage horror turns a couple’s home video recordings into a slow-building nightmare. The fixed-camera approach makes ordinary rooms and nighttime silences do much of the frightening work.

  23. This Is Spinal Tap (1984) — 82 minutes

Rob Reiner’s mockumentary follows a fictional heavy-metal band through tour mishaps and interviews that expose the gap between rock-star self-image and reality. Its improvised feel and carefully sustained deadpan make the jokes feel like documentary discoveries.

  24. Miracle Mile (1988) — 87 minutes

Steve De Jarnatt’s thriller begins with a missed call and a terrifying warning, then follows one man through a night of mounting panic. Its mix of romance, urban unease and apocalyptic suspense gives the short runtime an unusually breathless shape.

  25. The Blair Witch Project (1999) — 81 minutes

Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez’s found-footage horror follows three filmmakers lost in the woods while documenting a local legend. Its shaky images, uncertainty and offscreen threats leave room for the viewer’s imagination to do the scaring.

  26. The 39 Steps (1935) — 86 minutes

Alfred Hitchcock’s early British thriller sends an ordinary man on the run after he becomes entangled in espionage and murder. Its brisk pursuit plot and mix of danger and dry humor helped shape the director’s later chase films.

  27. Run Lola Run (1998) — 81 minutes

Tom Tykwer’s German thriller restarts the same urgent mission in variations, turning a race against time into a playful experiment with fate and small decisions. Its kinetic editing and soundtrack match the premise’s pulse.

  29. Grave of the Fireflies (1988) — 89 minutes

Isao Takahata’s animated drama follows a brother and sister struggling to survive in wartime Japan. Its hand-drawn beauty does not soften the subject; the film is moving, devastating and best approached when you are ready for an emotionally demanding watch.

  30. Toy Story (1995) — 81 minutes

John Lasseter’s feature-length computer-animated adventure turns the rivalry between a cowboy doll and a new space toy into a warm story about friendship and change. Its clear premise, inventive world and sharp jokes make it an easy recommendation for families and animation fans alike.

  31. Tangerine (2015) — 88 minutes

Sean Baker’s comedy-drama follows two friends across Los Angeles on a chaotic Christmas Eve. Its energetic street-level perspective and vivid performances make the city feel like an essential part of the story.

  33. Bait (2019) — 89 minutes

Mark Jenkin’s black-and-white drama centers on a Cornish fisherman whose way of life is unsettled by tourism and change. Its tactile, unusual filmmaking and local perspective offer a different kind of short feature: rough-edged, observant and rooted in place.

Runtime and streaming notes

The list applies “under 90 minutes” literally: a title shown at exactly 90 minutes does not qualify. A sub-90 runtime is not a guarantee that the film is available on a particular service. Streaming catalogs differ by country and change frequently, so confirm availability in your region.
