Christmas films work best when the choice matches the room: a gentle animated story for children, a familiar comedy for a crowded living room, or something sharper once the presents are wrapped. This list covers all three, along with holiday romances, classics and a few films that use Christmas as a pressure cooker rather than a backdrop.

Streaming availability checked in the U.S. on August 9, 2026. “Streaming” means included with a subscription or available free with ads. Rental and purchase listings are identified separately, because they are not the same thing as included streaming. Catalogs can change without notice.

Quick picks by mood

If you want… Start with…
A genuinely moving family film Klaus
A loud, easy crowd-pleaser Home Alone
Something for adults The Holdovers
A classic musical The Muppet Christmas Carol
A modern action comedy Red One
A Christmas romance The Holiday
A short animated option The Nightmare Before Christmas

The 26 best Christmas movies streaming now

  1. Klaus (2019) — Netflix, subscription

This hand-drawn-looking Netflix original gives the Santa story an origin myth with real emotional weight. Jesper, a spoiled postman, is sent to a bitter island community and gradually discovers that generosity can break a cycle of hostility. It is rated PG and runs 97 minutes, making it an excellent family choice that does not talk down to adults.

  2. Home Alone (1990) — Disney+, subscription

Kevin McCallister’s booby-trapped house remains one of the most efficient Christmas-comedy premises ever made. The slapstick is broad, but the film earns its warmth through Kevin’s loneliness and his connection with the misunderstood neighbor next door. It is best for families with children old enough to enjoy cartoonish peril.

  3. The Holdovers (2023) — Peacock Premium, subscription

Alexander Payne’s winter drama follows a strict teacher, a stranded student and a grieving cook left at a New England boarding school over the holidays. Christmas is not the point so much as the setting in which three difficult people are forced to see one another clearly. It is rated R and runs 133 minutes.

  4. The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992) — Disney+, subscription

Michael Caine plays Scrooge with complete seriousness while the Muppets supply the songs, jokes and ghosts. That balance is why this adaptation works for repeat viewing: children get the spectacle, while adults notice how faithfully it preserves Dickens’s melancholy. “It Feels Like Christmas” is the musical centerpiece.

  5. The Santa Clause (1994) — Disney+, subscription

After an accidental rooftop fall, a divorced father finds himself bound by the small print of Santa’s job. Tim Allen’s performance keeps the premise grounded in an ordinary man panicking about an impossible responsibility. It is a brisk 97-minute family comedy with a distinctly 1990s sensibility.

  6. The Christmas Chronicles (2018) — Netflix, subscription

Kurt Russell’s Santa is the main attraction here: energetic, funny and more action-heroic than grandfatherly. Two siblings accidentally crash his sleigh and must help repair the damage before Christmas disappears. At 104 minutes and rated PG, it is an easy choice for a family movie night.

  7. The Holiday (2006) — Tubi, free with ads

Two women from opposite sides of the Atlantic swap homes after painful breakups and find romance in unfamiliar surroundings. Nancy Meyers fills the film with cozy interiors, sharp friendship scenes and two very different love stories. Tubi’s version is free with ads; rental and purchase options also exist elsewhere.

  8. Red One (2024) — Amazon Prime Video, subscription; also Prime Video with Ads

This is Christmas as a high-concept action franchise. When Santa is kidnapped, a North Pole security chief and a reluctant tracker have to work together to find him. Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans provide the buddy-comedy engine, while the PG-13 film supplies monsters, chases and a 124-minute dose of holiday spectacle.

  9. The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) — Disney+, subscription

Jack Skellington discovers Christmas Town and decides to improve the holiday, with predictably chaotic results. Henry Selick’s stop-motion direction and Danny Elfman’s songs give the film a macabre visual identity without making it inaccessible to children. It is equally at home on Halloween and Christmas lists.

  10. Elf (2003) — Max, subscription

Will Ferrell plays Buddy, a human raised by elves who travels to New York after learning the truth about his origins. The joke is the collision between Buddy’s relentless cheer and a city that has no patience for it. The result is a fast, quotable comedy with enough family sentiment to become a seasonal staple.

  11. It’s a Wonderful Life (1946) — Prime Video, subscription

George Bailey’s crisis is more complicated than the simple phrase “Christmas classic” suggests. The film spends most of its time examining compromise, civic responsibility and the invisible value of an ordinary life before delivering its famous supernatural intervention. It is the pick for viewers who want their holiday movie to be earnest rather than slick.

  12. Miracle on 34th Street (1947) — Disney+, subscription

The original version remains the one to choose for its New York atmosphere and its unusually thoughtful question: what does belief mean when it collides with evidence? Edmund Gwenn’s Kris Kringle is gentle without being sugary, and the courtroom climax gives the story more substance than its department-store setup suggests. Be sure to select the 1947 film, not the 1994 remake.

  13. How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000) — Peacock, subscription

Jim Carrey’s live-action Grinch is noisy, heavily made-up and deliberately excessive. That makes it a good fit for viewers who want a maximalist holiday comedy rather than the compact rhythm of the 1966 animated special. It expands Dr. Seuss’s story with an elaborate Whoville and a backstory for the Grinch.

  14. A Christmas Story (1983) — rent or buy; not currently included with a subscription

Ralphie’s campaign to obtain a Red Ryder BB gun, the leg lamp and the infamous tongue-on-the-pole scene are firmly embedded in Christmas culture. However, the 1983 film is currently listed for rental or purchase rather than included streaming in the U.S. That distinction matters: it is a recommendation for the film, not a claim that it is free or subscription streaming today.

  15. The Christmas Chronicles 2 (2020) — Netflix, subscription

The sequel sends Kate to the North Pole, where a new threat is trying to destroy Christmas from within. It is more fantastical and action-heavy than the first film, with a larger role for Mrs. Claus and another committed performance from Kurt Russell. Watch it as a double feature with the original.

  16. Falling for Christmas (2022) — Netflix, subscription

Lindsay Lohan leads this deliberately old-fashioned holiday romance as a wealthy heiress who loses her memory after an accident and ends up with a widowed lodge owner. The appeal is its uncomplicated tone, snowy setting and willingness to embrace familiar romantic-comedy machinery. It runs 95 minutes and is rated PG.

  17. The Knight Before Christmas (2019) — Netflix, subscription

A medieval knight is transported to modern Ohio, where he meets a science teacher who has become skeptical about romance. Vanessa Hudgens anchors the fish-out-of-water comedy, which is light, clean and knowingly reliant on fairy-tale logic. It is a useful choice when the audience wants romance without much conflict.

  18. Single All the Way (2021) — Netflix, subscription

Peter persuades his best friend Nick to pose as his boyfriend during a family Christmas visit, only for the arrangement to become emotionally inconvenient. The film’s strength is its ensemble: the family feels like a source of comic pressure and genuine affection rather than a collection of obstacles. It is a warm, low-stakes holiday rom-com.

  19. Let It Snow (2019) — Netflix, subscription

A snowstorm links several teenage stories in a small Midwestern town on Christmas Eve. The film moves between crushes, friendship problems and family expectations, giving it the structure of a holiday ensemble rather than one central romance. Choose it for a younger audience that has outgrown animated Christmas fare.

  20. Holidate (2020) — Netflix, subscription

Two single adults agree to be each other’s platonic dates for every holiday, hoping to stop relatives from interrogating their relationship status. Predictably, the arrangement becomes less platonic. Emma Roberts and Luke Bracey keep the formula moving, while the adults-only humor makes this better suited to a late-night watch than a family gathering.

  21. Candy Cane Lane (2023) — Prime Video, subscription

Eddie Murphy plays a man determined to win his neighborhood’s Christmas decorating contest. His deal with a mysterious elf brings the decorations to life, turning competitive holiday cheer into a supernatural mess. It is broad, colorful and built for viewers who prefer Christmas comedies with fantasy chaos.

  22. A Castle for Christmas (2021) — Netflix, subscription

A bestselling author travels to Scotland after a public humiliation and decides to buy a castle, encountering an irritable duke who does not want to sell. The Scottish setting does most of the atmospheric work, while the romance follows a comfortable enemies-to-lovers path. Brooke Shields and Cary Elwes give the film an amiable, grown-up charm.

  23. Hotel for the Holidays (2022) — Prime Video, subscription; Prime Video with Ads and Prime Video Free with Ads

Staff and guests at a New York hotel become entangled in several holiday romances, with a hotel manager at the center of the story. It is a polished, low-pressure seasonal watch rather than a film built around surprises. The Prime Video listing includes ad-supported viewing options.

  24. Once Upon a Holiday (2015) — fuboTV, Philo or Hallmark+ channels, subscription; Pluto TV, free with ads

A princess escapes royal duties during a Christmas visit and meets an ordinary man who helps her experience the holiday anonymously. The premise is pure modern fairy tale, but the appeal is its uncomplicated pace and Hallmark-style comfort. Pluto TV provides a free-with-ads route when the title is in its catalog.

  25. Christmas Under the Stars (2019) — fuboTV, YouTube TV, Philo or Hallmark+ channels, subscription

A recently unemployed banker finds purpose helping to run a Christmas tree lot and develops a relationship with the woman who owns it. The film leans into community, second chances and seasonal rituals rather than elaborate twists. It is a straightforward choice for Hallmark-style holiday romance.

  26. The Santa Clause 2 (2002) — Disney+, subscription

Scott Calvin has settled into the Santa role, but the rules require him to find a wife before Christmas. At the same time, an inexperienced toy-making duplicate begins causing trouble at the North Pole. The sequel is broader than the original, with more time spent in Santa’s workshop and a stronger emphasis on its fantasy world.

How to avoid the wrong listing

Search results often combine subscription, ad-supported, rental and purchase offers. Before starting a film, check the wording beside the play button. “Included with subscription” or “free with ads” meets the definition used here; a dollar amount for a 48-hour rental does not. Also check the year when searching titles such as Miracle on 34th Street, How the Grinch Stole Christmas and A Christmas Story.

Netflix plans can also display different ad or subscription labels, and services remove seasonal titles without warning. The availability above is a U.S. snapshot, not a guarantee for another country or a later date.

FAQ

What is the best Christmas movie streaming right now?

Klaus is the strongest all-purpose recommendation: it is visually distinctive, emotionally substantial, family-friendly and currently included with Netflix in the U.S. For adults, choose The Holdovers on Peacock Premium.

Which Christmas movies on this list are free with ads?

The Holiday is listed on Tubi with ads, while Once Upon a Holiday is listed on Pluto TV with ads. Hotel for the Holidays is also listed through Prime Video Free with Ads. Catalogs and ad-supported access can change.

Is A Christmas Story streaming free?

The 1983 A Christmas Story is currently listed for rent or purchase rather than included with a subscription service. It should not be described as free or subscription streaming unless a new listing appears.

Are these streaming services available outside the United States?

Not necessarily. The availability check was made for the U.S. on August 9, 2026. Netflix, Disney+, Peacock, Prime Video and other services have different catalogs by country, so viewers elsewhere should check their local listings.

The Bottom Line

For one film, choose Klaus. For a family comedy, choose Home Alone or The Muppet Christmas Carol. For a more reflective night, choose The Holdovers. And before pressing play, confirm the listing says subscription or free with ads—especially for older favorites, whose availability changes more often than holiday traditions suggest.
