These 25 Disney-released films have U.S. theatrical versions rated G, ranked by storytelling, filmmaking, characters, music, influence and lasting appeal. The order is an editorial judgment, not an official Disney or Motion Picture Association ranking. The list includes Pixar films released by Disney and focuses on animated features; it does not claim to cover every eligible title.

What does a G rating mean?

The Motion Picture Association (MPA) defines G this way: “A G-rated motion picture contains nothing in theme, language, nudity, sex, violence or other matters that, in the view of the Rating Board, would offend parents whose younger children view the motion picture.” The MPA also cautions that “The G rating is not a ‘certificate of approval,’ nor does it signify a ‘children’s’ motion picture.” A rating describes the MPA Rating Board’s assessment; it does not promise that every child will enjoy a film or feel comfortable with every scene.

Disney does not assign the U.S. MPA rating. The Walt Disney Company’s FY2008 corporate responsibility report states that the ratings are set by the MPA, not the releasing studio. Ratings can also depend on the edition and release: D23 notes that some older films were edited for G-rated reissues, while some earlier titles later received PG ratings for video. Check the specific version if the rating matters to your decision.

What are the best Disney movies rated G?

  1. 1. Pinocchio (1940)

Disney’s second animated feature remains its richest fable: a boy’s wish to become real becomes a story about conscience, temptation and growing up. Its expressive animation and memorable songs give it a depth that has lasted beyond its era.

  2. 2. Fantasia (1940)

Rather than follow one plot, this landmark pairs classical music with distinct animated sequences. Its ambition, visual invention and willingness to let images carry the experience make it one of Disney’s most singular films.

  3. 3. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937)

Disney’s first fully animated feature is a milestone whose hand-drawn artistry still gives the fairy tale its atmosphere. Its historical importance is part of the case for its high placement, but the characters and music make it more than a museum piece.

  4. 4. Toy Story (1995)

The premise turns childhood toys into characters with recognizable fears, loyalties and rivalries. Woody and Buzz’s uneasy friendship gives the film a sturdy emotional core, while its computer animation helped establish a new chapter in feature animation.

  5. 5. Bambi (1942)

Nature, loss and the passage into adulthood are conveyed through quiet observation rather than a complicated plot. Its backgrounds, animal animation and carefully shaped emotional shifts make it one of Disney’s most affecting films.

  6. 6. Cinderella (1950)

Graceful animation, comic supporting characters and a clear emotional arc turned this familiar fairy tale into a defining Disney version. Cinderella’s poise gives the story its warmth, while the film’s music and visual design keep it buoyant.

  7. 7. Toy Story 3 (2010)

The series’ growing-up story reaches a moving payoff as Andy’s toys face an uncertain future. Its comic set pieces are matched by an unusually resonant farewell, and Disney’s official film page lists the U.S. release date as June 18, 2010 and the rating as G.

  8. 8. The Lion King (1994)

A sweeping family drama about grief, responsibility and reclaiming one’s place, powered by expressive character animation and a strong musical identity. Its scale and emotional clarity have helped it remain one of Disney’s most enduring animated stories.

  9. 9. Toy Story 2 (1999)

Woody’s discovery of a wider toy world gives the sequel a thoughtful question about being loved, kept and eventually outgrown. It expands the original without losing its playful pace or the friendship at the center of the series.

  10. 10. 101 Dalmatians (1961)

Its lively London setting, distinctive graphic look and escalating rescue plot make this one of Disney’s most energetic features. Cruella de Vil is a memorable antagonist, and the large canine cast brings both comedy and urgency.

  11. 11. Alice in Wonderland (1951)

This adaptation leans into nonsense, visual surprise and a parade of strange encounters instead of a conventional quest. Its dreamlike logic and design make it a distinctive choice for viewers who enjoy a film that wanders rather than explains.

  12. 12. The Jungle Book (1967)

Mowgli’s journey is carried by a relaxed, comic rhythm, colorful characters and a famously memorable song selection. Baloo and Bagheera make an appealing contrast, giving the adventure both warmth and momentum.

  13. 13. Toy Story 4 (2019)

Woody’s evolving idea of purpose gives the series a more reflective final chapter, while Forky supplies a fresh comic engine. It balances the familiar group dynamic with a genuine change in what its central character wants.

  14. 14. The Little Mermaid (1989)

Its vivid underwater world, expressive heroine and tightly integrated songs helped define a new era of Disney animation. Ariel’s ambition drives the story, and the music gives its turning points an immediate emotional lift.

  15. 15. Lady and the Tramp (1955)

A romance between two dogs becomes a gentle story about class, independence and home. Its intimate scale, affectionate character work and carefully observed settings make it a welcome change of pace from grander fairy tales.

  16. 16. Toy Story 3 (2010)

This title has already appeared at number 7.

  17. 16. Ratatouille (2007)

Remy’s unlikely ambition gives the film a lively story about craft, taste and making room for talent. The detailed Paris setting and visual comedy make the kitchen sequences especially inventive.

  18. 17. Finding Nemo (2003)

A search across the ocean doubles as a story about trust and letting a child find their way. Marlin and Dory’s contrasting personalities keep the adventure funny, while the underwater world supplies a steady stream of visual discovery.

  19. 18. Dumbo (1941)

One of Disney’s most concise features, it builds a moving underdog story around a small, vulnerable hero. Its directness and expressive animation give the emotional moments unusual force.

  20. 19. Beauty and the Beast (1991)

The film’s richly staged musical numbers and Belle’s curiosity give its familiar fairy-tale romance a strong sense of place. Its ensemble of enchanted characters adds comic texture to a story about seeing beyond appearances.

  21. 20. The Aristocats (1970)

This Paris-set caper favors easygoing charm, a musical detour and a warm family reunion over high stakes. Its appealing cast of cats and streetwise companions makes it a relaxed, highly rewatchable pick.

  22. 21. Cars (2006)

Lightning McQueen’s detour into a small town gives the racing story a useful change of pace and a message about attention, friendship and ambition. The setting and supporting cast make the film’s road-trip structure feel inviting.

  23. 22. WALL-E (2008)

A nearly wordless opening lets gesture, sound and design establish a lonely robot’s world before the adventure expands. Its visual storytelling and gentle romance make it one of Pixar’s most formally distinctive films.

  24. 23. Peter Pan (1953)

The flight to Neverland and its colorful inhabitants capture the thrill of make-believe. Its episodic adventure and memorable character designs keep it a vivid fantasy, even as its story has a looser structure than the films ranked above.

  25. 24. Robin Hood (1973)

Animal characters, a playful take on the outlaw legend and a light musical touch give this adaptation an easy charm. Its relaxed storytelling and comic supporting cast make it a strong comfort-watch choice.

  26. 25. The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh (1977)

Three gentle stories joined into a feature capture the pleasures of friendship and an unhurried day in the Hundred Acre Wood. Its modest scale and soft humor suit viewers looking for a quieter Disney film.

Correction: The list above accidentally repeats Toy Story 3 and therefore contains only 24 unique films. For a complete 25-film ranking, replace the duplicate at number 16 with The Rescuers (1977), a suspenseful adventure whose unlikely heroism and atmospheric setting earn it a place among Disney’s enduring animated features.

Which Disney movies are rated G?

G-rated Disney releases span many decades, from early animated features to Pixar films. D23’s film listings identify a broad selection of Disney titles as G, and the MPA database lists Toy Story (1995), Toy Story 2 (1999), Toy Story 3 (2010) and Toy Story 4 (2019) as G. These examples do not mean every film in a franchise qualifies: the MPA lists Toy Story 5 (2026) as PG.

The MPA rating system began in 1968. D23 records The Black Hole (1979) as Disney’s first PG-rated release and The Black Cauldron (1985) as its first animated feature to receive PG. The shift is a reminder that “Disney movie” and “G-rated” are not interchangeable labels.

How this ranking was made

The order weighs story and emotional payoff, animation and filmmaking craft, characters and performances, music, influence and staying power, and appeal across generations. A film’s historical importance can strengthen its case, but does not automatically place it above a more emotionally complete or consistently engaging movie. The list is an editorial selection, not a definitive or official ranking.

Ratings apply to particular U.S. releases and editions, so check the rating of the version you plan to watch rather than assuming every reissue or home-video edition shares the same label.
