The 11 Best Movie Adaptations of A Christmas Carol, Ranked

The Muppet Christmas Carol is the best all-around pick, but the 1951, 1984, and 1999 versions suit viewers seeking traditional or more faithful Dickens. Here are 11 adaptations ranked by performance, tone, format, and fidelity.

For the best all-around adaptation, start with The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992): Michael Caine plays Scrooge straight, Gonzo narrates as Dickens, and the film balances songs and comedy with a real affection for the novella. For a traditional live-action classic, choose the 1951 film starring Alastair Sim; for a more somber, close-to-the-book treatment, try the 1984 or 1999 versions.

This ranking is an editorial synthesis, not a settled consensus. It weighs fidelity to Dickens’s plot and language, the central Scrooge performance, tone, format, and audience fit. Critics’ rankings differ: TheWrap puts the 1951 film first and the Muppets second, while Penguin ranks the Muppets first and Patrick Stewart’s 1999 version second.

How this ranking works

A Christmas Carol has been adapted in many formats and styles, so a single “best” depends on what a viewer wants. Fidelity means more than retaining the names: it includes Dickens’s plot, language, and moral arc. The ranking also considers whether a performance makes Scrooge’s change convincing, and whether the adaptation’s tone and format suit its purpose.

The list includes feature films, television films and specials, plus one companion film that imagines the novella being written. Those distinctions matter: not every entry is a direct, conventional movie retelling.

The 11 best adaptations, ranked

1. The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992)

The strongest all-around choice for viewers who want Dickens with warmth, humor, and music. Michael Caine treats Scrooge as a serious dramatic role, while Gonzo narrates as Charles Dickens and the Muppets bring comic energy to the story around him. The film retains direct language from the novella rather than treating it as a loose premise.

Penguin describes it as both highly beloved and among the more accurate adaptations; The Independent likewise praises its respect for the source and Caine’s sincere performance. It is an especially inviting starting point for families, though its songs and puppet cast make it a different experience from a restrained period drama.

2. A Christmas Carol / Scrooge (1951)

Alastair Sim’s Scrooge anchors the traditional live-action classic. TheWrap calls his performance definitive, while Tom’s Guide highlights the film’s melancholy and lived-in Victorian atmosphere. Its black-and-white photography gives the story a shadowed, old-fashioned feel that later color versions do not share.

Choose this one for a classic screen interpretation and an emotionally legible redemption arc. Its appeal is less about novelty than the way Sim’s performance carries the change from miserly isolation to generosity.

3. A Christmas Carol (1984)

George C. Scott gives this television film a stern, imposing Scrooge. The Independent argues that it brings the whole story to the screen while expanding Scrooge’s backstory; TheWrap also singles out Scott’s commanding performance. It is a strong pick for viewers who want a serious, full-bodied live-action retelling rather than a comic update.

4. A Christmas Carol (1999)

Patrick Stewart’s version is the choice here for viewers who put Dickens’s language and a somber tone high on the list. Penguin describes its language, pacing, and atmosphere as faithful to the novella, and TheWrap praises Stewart alongside the supporting cast. Its comparatively close approach makes it a useful alternative to the more stylized or modernized entries.

5. Scrooged (1988)

Bill Murray relocates the story to the world of television: his Frank Cross is a cynical executive overseeing a live Christmas production, and the haunting forces him to confront the damage he has done. The result is a comic modernization rather than a period retelling. Penguin calls it a creative update, while TheWrap and Tom’s Guide emphasize its sharp comedy.

Pick Scrooged for satire and contemporary farce, not for a close reproduction of Dickens’s Victorian setting or language.

6. A Christmas Carol (2009)

Robert Zemeckis’s animated film uses motion capture, with Jim Carrey playing Scrooge and the three ghosts. It combines lines from Dickens with modern visual effects and action, making it the most overtly animated spectacle on this list. Disney’s official page gives the film a PG rating, a runtime of 1 hour 39 minutes, and a U.S. release date of November 6, 2009: Disney’s film page.

It suits viewers looking for a visually energetic, computer-animated version. Its style is markedly different from the intimate, stage-like performances of the live-action classics.

7. A Christmas Carol (1938)

This MGM-era film stars Reginald Owen as Scrooge and Gene Lockhart as Bob Cratchit. It offers a glossy studio-era take on the story. TheWrap notes a revealing departure: the Cratchit household appears notably comfortable compared with many other portrayals, softening the contrast between their circumstances and Scrooge’s wealth.

That difference makes the film interesting to compare with versions that stress Dickens’s social criticism more forcefully.

8. Scrooge (1970)

Albert Finney leads this large-scale musical adaptation, with songs by Leslie Bricusse and Alec Guinness as Marley. It leans into theatrical spectacle and musical numbers, so it is a natural choice for viewers who want a festive show rather than a quiet ghost story. Tom’s Guide includes it among its notable adaptations.

9. Carol for Another Christmas (1964)

This television film turns the Carol structure into a political and social allegory. Rod Serling wrote it, and Joseph L. Mankiewicz directed; a wealthy isolationist is confronted by ghostly visitors. Tom’s Guide describes it as an unusually dark and ambitious interpretation.

It is the most politically pointed entry here, and a less conventional choice for viewers expecting a straightforward Victorian retelling.

10. A Flintstones Christmas Carol (1994)

This television special stages the story as a play within the Flintstones’ world. Penguin calls it surprisingly faithful despite its cartoon setting and recommends it as nostalgic fun. Its playful framing makes it a lighter family option, though it is a television special rather than a feature film.

11. The Man Who Invented Christmas (2017)

This is a companion film, not a direct adaptation of the novella. It imagines Charles Dickens writing A Christmas Carol and interacting with the characters as he creates them. Penguin describes it as part biography and part Christmas fantasy.

Include it if “adaptations” can encompass a film about the creation of the story. If you want only direct retellings, skip this entry; it approaches Dickens’s work from the outside rather than replaying the full Carol plot.
