Jeffree Star’s biggest controversies are not an objectively ranked top ten. They are a set of documented episodes that shaped his public image: resurfaced racist videos and Nazi imagery in early branding, repeated beauty-community feuds, his intervention in the 2019 James Charles–Tati Westbrook dispute, and later allegations and denials. The list below groups related events where the evidence belongs together and distinguishes video or public-post evidence from claims made by individuals and journalists.
How to read this list
“Biggest” here means episodes with substantial public attention and a clear connection to Star’s reputation, relationships, or cosmetics career—not a definitive ranking by severity. The available reporting primarily covers 2018–2022, so this is a historical account rather than a claim to capture every later development. The evidence also varies: some entries concern resurfaced videos or public tweets, while others are attributed allegations or retrospective reporting.
1. Resurfaced racist videos and Star’s apology
In August 2018, The Washington Post reported on resurfaced videos in which Star made racist remarks. Star called the statements “disgusting, vile, nasty and embarrassing” and said that seeing the videos again made him sick. He attributed his behavior at the time to depression, anger, feeling unaccepted, and seeking attention. Those were his explanations; an apology does not by itself establish that the harm was repaired. The Post also described a public debate over forgiveness and whether he had changed. The Washington Post’s 2018 report provides the context.
2. Early “Lipstick Nazi” imagery
The Tab’s 2020 retrospective says Star used Nazi imagery in early “Lipstick Nazi” branding. It recounts his explanation that the phrase was slang at the time, and quotes him apologizing for racist words. That explanation is Star’s account, not a neutral description of the imagery’s meaning or impact. The Tab’s retrospective places the branding within the longer scrutiny of his past conduct. The Tab’s timeline covers the episode.

3. The public break with Kat Von D
In 2016, tattoo artist and cosmetics entrepreneur Kat Von D announced that she was ending her friendship with Star. The Tab reports that she cited “drug use, racism, and bullying.” Those are Von D’s stated reasons as reported by the publication; the account should not be treated as an independent finding about each claim. The falling-out became a prominent example of how personal relationships and public criticism overlapped in the beauty scene. The Tab’s account recounts the break.
4. Wider fallouts in the beauty community
Star’s conflict with Von D was part of a broader pattern of highly visible friendships and ruptures among beauty creators. TIME’s 2022 retrospective places public fallouts involving Star and beauty YouTubers including Manny MUA, Gabriel Zamora, Laura Lee, and Nikita Dragun within the history of “Dramageddon.” These were not all one event, and the reporting does not establish that each friendship ended for the same reason. TIME’s retrospective situates the group conflicts in that community history.

5. Star entered the 2019 Westbrook–Charles dispute
In May 2019, Tati Westbrook published “Bye Sister,” criticizing James Charles. Star publicly backed Westbrook in now-deleted tweets and accused Charles of being dangerous. Seventeen’s timeline reproduces one tweet: “He is a danger to society. Everything Tati said is 100% true.” It reports that Star supplied no evidence for those claims in the tweets. A public accusation is not proof of the accusation. Seventeen’s timeline records the posts and their context.
6. The accusations against Charles and the attack on his brother
The dispute escalated when Star’s tweets went beyond endorsing Westbrook’s criticism. Seventeen reports that he called Charles a “predator” and attacked Charles’s brother in a tweet. The posts were part of an online dispute, not an adjudicated finding about Charles. Their significance lies partly in the reach of a prominent creator’s claims and the consequences of circulating severe allegations without evidence in the posts. Seventeen’s account documents this part of the feud.

7. Star later regretted the tweets
Star subsequently apologized for intervening in the Charles dispute. Seventeen quotes him saying he had “jump[ed] the gun” on a situation he did not fully understand and that he regretted “hitting the send button.” His later statement materially changed the public account of his role: he acknowledged acting on information that had not been proven. It does not, by itself, settle the underlying dispute between Westbrook and Charles. Seventeen’s timeline includes his remarks.
8. Westbrook’s 2020 allegation about Star and Shane Dawson
In June 2020, Westbrook published “Breaking My Silence,” apologized to Charles, and alleged that Star and Shane Dawson had fed her lies that influenced her decision to make “Bye Sister.” ELLE quoted her saying she made the video “as a result of all the poisonous lies that were fed to me by Shane Dawson and Jeffree Star.” This is Westbrook’s allegation, not an independently established finding that the two conspired to produce the video. ELLE’s timeline recounts the allegation and the sequence of events.

9. Abuse allegations reported in 2020, and Star’s attorney’s denial
TIME’s 2022 retrospective describes an October 2020 Insider investigation into allegations of sexual assault, physical violence, and offers of hush money involving Star. TIME reports that Star’s attorney denied the physical- and sexual-violence claims, calling them “false and defamatory.” The reporting cited here does not establish a court finding. The allegations must therefore be described as allegations reported by the investigation, alongside the attorney’s denial—not as proven conduct. TIME’s retrospective summarizes the investigation and denial.
10. The Shane Dawson collaboration and its reputational baggage
Star and Dawson released the Shane x Jeffree Conspiracy Collection makeup palette in 2019. The collaboration joined Star’s cosmetics business to a creator partnership that drew renewed attention when both men later made a YouTube comeback. TIME reported in October 2022 that their comeback video referred to an unreleased follow-up palette; that does not establish the current availability of the 2019 product. TIME’s account describes the collaboration and comeback.

The commercial context matters, but Dawson’s controversies should not be assigned to Star. In June 2020, The Washington Post reported that YouTube had indefinitely stopped running ads on Dawson’s three channels after reviewing his on- and off-platform actions, and that Target was removing Dawson’s books. Those were consequences reported for Dawson, not findings or penalties against Star. The Washington Post’s report explains those actions and the surrounding controversy.
Why these episodes still define the public story
The recurring thread is the collision of creator relationships, public accusation, and commerce. Resurfaced material prompted questions about accountability; feuds turned private relationships into public entertainment; and the 2019 Westbrook–Charles dispute showed how a creator’s intervention could amplify claims before they were established. Later accounts and apologies changed how some episodes were understood, but they do not make every disputed claim either true or false. A careful history keeps the evidence type attached to each claim.
