This list uses the American Film Institute’s 2005 ranking of American movie musicals as its guide, presenting AFI’s top ten in order—not a universal verdict on musicals from every country, era, or tradition. A different list can produce a different result: Rotten Tomatoes, for example, ranks qualifying live-action musicals by Tomatometer, with Certified Fresh titles first. The films below reward repeat viewing in different ways, from story-driven songs to dance, performance, and spectacle.
AFI’s 10 greatest American movie musicals
AFI’s 2005 list supplies the ranking and release years below. The brief viewing notes are editorial guidance, not AFI scores: consider how the songs serve the story, the performances, the staging, the film’s tone, and its influence. AFI’s ranking is a useful starting point, not the only way to decide which musical belongs at the top.

Singin’ in the Rain (1952) — AFI No. 1
Its story turns the transition from silent films to sound into a comedy about filmmaking itself. Music and comedy are part of the same engine: AFI’s material recognizes “Singin’ in the Rain,” “Make ‘Em Laugh,” and “Good Morning” among its movie-music selections. That combination makes the film especially rewarding to revisit for both its songs and its jokes. AFI’s ranking and AFI Movie Club’s film feature provide further context.
-
West Side Story (1961) — AFI No. 2
AFI places this 1961 film second. Its position offers a change of register from the list’s comic opener: approach it as a musical built around performance and dramatic stakes, and notice how its staging and songs shape the film’s emotional force.

The Wizard of Oz (1939) — AFI No. 3
Third on AFI’s list, this fantasy musical makes a strong repeat watch when you want a story world carried by memorable songs and larger-than-life imagery. Its earlier release year also shows how far back AFI’s selection reaches.
-
The Sound of Music (1965) — AFI No. 4
AFI ranks the film fourth and recognizes three of its songs on its separate 100 Years…100 Songs list: “The Sound of Music” at No. 10, “My Favorite Things” at No. 64, and “Do Re Mi” at No. 88. Those are list positions, not measures of audience popularity. The AFI Movie Club feature offers additional context.
Rank #2
-
Cabaret (1972) — AFI No. 5
At No. 5, Cabaret brings a different tone to the selection. It is a worthwhile pick when you want a musical whose atmosphere and dramatic weight matter as much as the pleasure of its performances.
-
Mary Poppins (1964) — AFI No. 6
AFI places this 1964 film sixth. Its blend of fantasy and musical performance makes it a natural choice for a lighter repeat viewing, with spectacle and character sharing the focus.

A Star Is Born (1954) — AFI No. 7
This is the 1954 film, ranked seventh by AFI—not one of the other films released under the same title. The year is essential when searching for it or comparing versions.
-
My Fair Lady (1964) — AFI No. 8
AFI ranks My Fair Lady eighth. Consider it for its central performances and the way songs and character development work together across the story.

An American in Paris (1951) — AFI No. 9
Ninth on the list, this 1951 title is a useful choice if you are drawn to musical staging and the visual design of a film as much as its plot and performances.
-
Meet Me in St. Louis (1944) — AFI No. 10
AFI’s tenth entry is the oldest film in this top ten by release year. It rounds out the list with a family-centered musical, making it a fitting option for viewers who want an earlier, more intimate period piece.

Why another greatest-musicals list may rank films differently
“Greatest” depends on what a list counts and how it orders the films. AFI’s selection is explicitly about American movie musicals. Rotten Tomatoes uses a different scope: its list covers live-action musicals, excludes films where characters only perform music rather than breaking into song and dance, and orders qualifying films by Tomatometer, with Certified Fresh titles first. Its ratings and list can change over time. Neither method settles the question for every viewer or includes every national cinema and musical tradition.
For your own repeat-watch shortlist, weigh the things that matter to you: whether songs move the story forward, how the cast sings and acts, the inventiveness of the dancing and staging, the emotional effect, and the style or influence you value. These are practical comparison criteria, not a scoring system published by AFI or Rotten Tomatoes.
Where to watch or own these films
Streaming availability varies by country and changes over time; no current, location-specific listing is established here for any of the ten films. Check a streaming guide or service available in your region before planning a watch. The same applies to physical media: confirm that a specific edition exists, is compatible with your player, and is in stock before buying.
