John Cena, Kurt Angle and Brock Lesnar helped define WWE’s Ruthless Aggression Era, but there is no official, universally agreed ranking of its best wrestlers. This editorial top 10 weighs each wrestler’s impact on the era, period-specific championship and major-event achievements, rivalries and matches, and character work. The focus is on what they contributed during the era—not everything they accomplished later.

How this ranking defines “best”

WWE’s retrospective frames the central question as which Superstar defined the Ruthless Aggression Era, and its editors make different cases for Cena, Angle, Batista, Lesnar, Edge, Orton, Trish Stratus and JBL. It does not establish an official order. This list applies four considerations: influence on the era’s direction and identity; achievements during the period; the significance and range of rivalries or matches; and character work with lasting cultural impact. The order is an editorial judgment, not a statistical score or WWE-published ranking.

The era is often associated with Cena’s June 2002 debut and the wave of new main-event stars that followed, but the cited WWE histories do not establish universally binding start and end dates. The entries below therefore focus on the period’s milestones without claiming a definitive boundary.

The 10 best wrestlers of the Ruthless Aggression Era

1. John Cena

Cena’s debut on SmackDown on June 27, 2002, is closely tied to the era’s name. When Kurt Angle challenged him, Cena answered with the phrase “ruthless aggression” before the match began. WWE’s account of the moment makes it an unusually fitting origin point for a period defined by a new generation asserting itself. WWE.com editor Bobby Melok argued that “no one embodied ruthless aggression more than Cena”—an individual editor’s assessment, not an official verdict.

Cena’s rise also became a defining championship story: WWE records his first WWE Championship victory over JBL at WrestleMania 21. In a 2012 retrospective, WWE reported that Cena had held the WWE Championship 10 times for 1,058 days within the scope of that article. That is a WWE-published statistic from that retrospective, not a complete, independently comparable measure of every candidate here.

2. Kurt Angle

Angle sits near the top because he combined elite technical skill with big-match range and helped establish the era’s opening image: his challenge to the newcomer Cena and the match that followed. WWE’s retrospective also points to his WrestleMania XIX showdown with Lesnar as a signature contest. Brad Zak, writing as a WWE.com editor, said of Angle, “There will never be another like him.” That captures the case for his place on this list, while remaining an editor’s opinion rather than a formal ranking.

3. Brock Lesnar

Lesnar’s impact was immediate. WWE’s retrospective highlights his 2002 King of the Ring win, his WWE Championship victory over The Rock, and his later title regain in a WrestleMania main event. Those milestones made him a credible central figure unusually quickly, and his matches with Angle gave the era a high-profile clash of contrasting strengths: Lesnar’s explosive power and Angle’s technical precision.

4. Batista

Batista’s path from Evolution member to solo headliner is one of the era’s clearest breakout arcs. WWE’s timeline says Randy Orton’s addition to Evolution in 2003 officially kicked off the faction. Batista’s own ascent reached a major turning point in 2005: WWE’s retrospective credits him with winning the Royal Rumble and defeating Triple H for the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania 21. The same WWE article describes him as a six-time World Champion; that figure is attributed to WWE’s retrospective rather than offered as a period-only comparison. WWE.com editor Kevin Powers called Batista “the very personification” of the era’s transformation of the WWE landscape.

5. Edge

Edge’s case rests on reinvention and timing. WWE’s retrospective argues that he made the most of the brand split and Money in the Bank, built a strong identity as a face of SmackDown, and became a compelling rival to Cena. That mix of opportunism, character work and rivalry helped make Edge more than a supporting player in the era’s changing main-event picture.

6. Randy Orton

Orton’s addition to Evolution gave him a platform, but his Legend Killer character made the rise his own. WWE dates Evolution’s official beginning to his addition on February 3, 2003, and its era retrospective follows his progression toward championship prominence. He belongs here for the combination of faction role, a distinctive persona and a sustained move into the top tier.

Rank #4

7. Eddie Guerrero

Guerrero brought charisma and emotional credibility to a championship scene that could otherwise have felt dominated by larger-than-life powerhouses. On February 15, 2004, he defeated Lesnar for the WWE Championship in a result WWE’s history presents as a major upset, with Guerrero framed as an underdog in the buildup. The importance of that victory was not only the title change: it gave the audience a personal, hard-won triumph to invest in.

8. Triple H

Triple H was one of the period’s central championship figures and a defining leader of Evolution. His role gave the faction’s younger members a powerful benchmark to challenge, and his WrestleMania 21 loss to Batista marked the arrival of a new top-level star. This ranking recognizes his influence on the era’s feuds and title picture without treating his achievements from other periods as evidence for this one.

9. Shawn Michaels

Michaels’ return brought a veteran presence to the era’s biggest matches and rivalries. His place in the ten reflects that high-profile role and the significance of his in-ring contributions, rather than a claim that the available WWE records provide a directly comparable period-only statistic for him and every other wrestler on this list.

10. Rey Mysterio

Mysterio earned a place through the contrast his underdog style brought to a division often centered on size and power, as well as his major championship achievement during the period. WWE’s history and title records anchor his relevance, though the cited material does not supply a standardized period-only statistical comparison across all ten candidates. His inclusion recognizes a distinct audience connection and a different model of main-event success.

Why Trish Stratus is a notable omission

This list covers men’s and women’s divisions together, but its ten places are not a claim that every deserving wrestler is represented. WWE’s own retrospective makes a strong case for Trish Stratus, citing her major women’s division accomplishments. She is a credible contender for a different version of this ranking; including her would require displacing one of the ten above. JBL is also among WWE editors’ choices, with his own era-specific case. The choice of a top ten depends in part on how a ranking weighs division-wide influence against individual championship and rivalry stories.

What the ranking can—and cannot—settle

These wrestlers shaped the era in different ways: Cena became its defining new face, Angle and Lesnar delivered major-match contrasts, Batista and Orton embodied the Evolution pipeline, and Edge, Guerrero, Triple H, Michaels and Mysterio added distinct rivalries, characters and championship stories. WWE’s editors themselves offer competing answers to who defined the period, and the available records do not provide a common match-quality score, audience metric or championship weighting that could turn this into an objective calculation. A different, consistently applied set of priorities could reasonably reorder the list.
