What the ranking says—and what it does not
Greatest Hits is far ahead in this source’s estimates, with Escape second and Frontiers third. The remaining entries are much closer together: Evolution, Infinity and Departure each have estimates near 3 million.
This is a ranking of Journey releases, not just studio albums: it includes the live set Captured and the compilations Greatest Hits and The Essential Journey. “Best-selling” here means the order in one secondary source’s estimated-copy list, not a measure of critical reputation or a universally audited total.

Why Journey’s sales figures differ by source
Sales totals depend on what is being counted. BestSellingAlbums.org estimates copies sold; other sources make different claims or use different measures. Those figures should be reported separately rather than combined into one ranking.
Escape: estimates, worldwide claim and certification
BestSellingAlbums.org estimates Escape at 10,411,540 copies. Official Charts separately says the album sold 12 million copies worldwide, without explaining the methodology on its artist-history page. Journey’s official About page identifies Escape as its seventh studio album and says it received RIAA Diamond certification in 2021. The page describes Diamond as more than 10 million equivalent units. These are distinct claims, not interchangeable measures.
Rank #2
Greatest Hits: estimate versus US certification
BestSellingAlbums.org’s album detail page estimates Greatest Hits at 18,607,000 copies and lists US certification as 18× Platinum in 2024. Journey’s official About page says the album was certified Diamond in April 2008. RIAA certifications are US-market measures; they are not worldwide physical-copy counts, and they should not be substituted for the ranking’s estimate.
A different model for Escape
ChartMasters displays 36,189,000 total EAS for Escape, with a breakdown that includes modeled studio-album, other-LP, single and streaming components. EAS is an album-equivalent-sales model, so this figure does not measure the same thing as BestSellingAlbums.org’s estimated copies.
Rank #3
- Two albums in one: Greatest Hits – Volume 1 & Volume 2.
- 33 iconic tracks: Including hits like "Don’t Stop Believin’" and "Open Arms".
- Classic rock anthems: Essential songs from Journey’s legendary career.
- Perfect for fans: A must-have collection for Journey lovers.
- High-quality sound: Remastered for optimal listening experience.
Release-year note for Escape
BestSellingAlbums.org lists Escape as a 1980 release, while Journey’s official music page presents it under 1981. The ranking above preserves the year used by its source so readers can interpret the table consistently; it does not settle the release-date discrepancy. The ranking page also lists Departure as 1980.
Journey’s official page describes Escape as “The legendary origin of ‘Don’t Stop Believing’, ‘Open Arms’, and 9 more epic tracks.” That is the album’s official promotional wording, not an independent assessment.
