This July 6, 2025 selection ranks ten standout British shows in this order: Black Mirror season 7, Miss Austen, Boarders season 2, Amandaland, Dept. Q, Toxic Town, A Thousand Blows, Reunion, What It Feels Like for a Girl and Adolescence. It is an editorial recommendation rather than an industry award, audience chart or universal consensus. The 10 best British shows, explained

1. Black Mirror season 7 — Netflix

The latest season of Charlie Brooker’s science-fiction anthology is the list’s most obviously high-concept choice. The selection specifically points to the USS Callister sequel and the episode “Eulogy”, making it a good pick for viewers who want speculative technology stories that can turn from playful to disturbing without warning. As an anthology, episodes can be watched independently, although the returning USS Callister story is best approached with its earlier episode in mind.

2. Miss Austen — BBC iPlayer in the UK

Andrea Gibb’s BBC adaptation of Gill Hornby’s novel follows Cassandra Austen as she protects Jane Austen’s letters. A story set after Jane’s death frames flashbacks to the sisters’ earlier lives, combining literary history with an intimate family drama.

The natural companion is the Miss Austen book by Gill Hornby, the source novel on which the television adaptation is based. That book is a reading recommendation, not a streaming route. The July 2025 listing did not have a US streaming date.

3. Boarders season 2 — BBC iPlayer in the UK

This teen comedy-drama returns to a predominantly white boarding school where scholarship students navigate unequal power, class and adolescence. Its appeal is the way social issues are embedded in school relationships rather than treated as a separate lesson. The July 2025 listing gave no US streaming date.

4. Amandaland — BBC iPlayer in the UK

The Motherland spin-off follows Amanda after divorce, a move and a sharp change in her finances and social position. It shifts the character into a new setting while retaining the discomfort of status anxiety and family logistics. The listed US availability was unannounced at publication.

5. Dept. Q — Netflix

This Scottish cold-case mystery adapts Jussi Adler-Olsen’s novels. It belongs on the list for viewers who prefer procedural investigation, damaged investigators and an unfolding case built from old evidence rather than a self-contained weekly puzzle. Netflix was the listed destination.

6. Toxic Town — Netflix

Jack Thorne’s drama fictionalises a story about mothers, children with limb differences and a legal battle over suspected pollution and negligence. Its subject matter is emotionally heavy, and viewers should treat it as dramatisation rather than a replacement for reporting on the real legal history. Netflix was the listed service.

7. A Thousand Blows — Disney+ in the UK; Hulu in the US

Steven Knight’s period drama draws on real figures in 1880s London. Boxing and the Forty Elephants crime gang drive a story with both sporting violence and organised criminal ambition. The service split is explicit: Disney+ for the UK and Hulu for the US in the July 2025 listing.

8. Reunion — BBC iPlayer in the UK

This revenge thriller begins with a deaf man recently released from prison. BSL is used by cast and crew, and substantial dialogue is in BSL with subtitles. That production and accessibility detail is central to the show’s identity, not a footnote. The listing did not give a US streaming date.

9. What It Feels Like for a Girl — BBC iPlayer in the UK

Adapted from Paris Lees’s memoir, the coming-of-age drama follows a trans teenager in early-2000s Nottinghamshire. Its period setting places the character’s adolescence inside a specific cultural moment rather than presenting the story as a timeless generalisation. US availability was unannounced in the July 2025 information.

10. Adolescence — Netflix

This four-part drama, co-created by Stephen Graham and Jack Thorne, examines the aftermath of a murder committed by a 13-year-old. Each episode uses a one-take technique, while the narrative moves among different perspectives. The formal approach intensifies the sense of events unfolding in real time.

Ofcom’s Media Nations 2025 report, using Barb data, recorded Adolescence at 12.2 million viewers by the end of March 2025. That is a UK measurement for the first quarter of 2025, not a current global total. The Guardian’s June 2025 review coverage also connected the drama’s story to public discussion of teenage toxic masculinity; that is critical framing, not proof of a measured social effect. Sam Haysom, Mashable’s Deputy UK Editor, called the show “chillingly effective”, a critic’s judgement rather than a viewing statistic.

What “best” means here

The ranking mixes returning seasons, a spin-off, adaptations, anthology science fiction, comedy, crime, period drama and social realism. It should therefore be read as a curated set of recommendations, not a like-for-like competition. The British Film Institute’s 2025 selections likewise ranged across documentary, thriller, comedy-drama and period storytelling, reinforcing that the year’s television cannot be reduced to one genre or viewing mood.

Streaming and UK market context

Availability in the list is territory-specific and time-sensitive. BBC iPlayer entries are UK routes; the July 2025 source did not confirm US dates for Miss Austen, Boarders season 2, Amandaland, Reunion or What It Feels Like for a Girl. Netflix titles are listed without a territorial qualification, while A Thousand Blows is specifically split between Disney+ in the UK and Hulu in the US. Recheck the exact season and country before subscribing or renting.

For wider UK viewing habits, Ofcom reported in 2026 that viewers’ first-choice destinations when looking for something to watch were Netflix at 26%, BBC at 25% and ITV at 15%; broadcaster-owned on-demand viewing had risen 9% year on year. Those are UK market figures, not evidence that any one of these ten shows has those shares or that a listed service has permanent rights.
