There is no reliable evidence in the sources reviewed that Jay-Z and Aaliyah dated or had a confirmed romantic relationship. The strongest defensible distinction is between pursuit and dating. In reports published in 2019 and 2025, Damon Dash described Jay-Z as trying to win Aaliyah’s attention. Dash was personally involved in Aaliyah’s life, so his recollections are relevant but not independent confirmation. They describe what he believed was happening around him; they do not prove what Aaliyah felt, wanted or agreed to.
What Damon Dash said about Jay-Z’s alleged pursuit
Dash’s 2019 account
Capital XTRA’s 2019 report, which attributed comments to Dash made to Page Six, said Jay-Z “worked hard” in pursuing Aaliyah. Dash also said that “everyone was trying to get to Aaliyah.” The same account reported that Dash and Aaliyah dated from 2000 until her death in 2001, while quoting Dash’s description of their connection as having “never any obligation or any title.”

Dash also recalled: “I didn’t want to fall in love with Aaliyah, she was so cool.” That sentence is Dash’s description of his own feelings, not evidence of Jay-Z and Aaliyah having a relationship.
Dash’s 2025 clarification
In a YouTube interview reported by Complex in 2025, Dash rejected the idea that he dated Aaliyah after Jay-Z. He said of Jay-Z: “He did not [date her]. He was trying her.” Dash added, “We were both putting in our bid. None of us had scored.”

This later account reinforces the pursuit-versus-dating distinction. It remains a retrospective statement from an interested participant, not a direct account from Aaliyah or Jay-Z.

These descriptions should not be forced into a single definitive timeline. “Engaged,” “serious relationship” and an unlabeled bond are different descriptions from different sources. Why the rumor persists
The story combines a famous artist, a later-famous business figure and an account of competing romantic interest. Headlines and search phrases such as “Jay-Z was in love with Aaliyah” or “Jay-Z tried hard to date Aaliyah” can blur the difference between a reported claim and an established fact. Dash’s wording describes attempted courtship; it does not document a completed relationship.
The best-supported conclusion is therefore narrow: Dash said Jay-Z pursued Aaliyah, while the available material does not establish that Jay-Z and Aaliyah dated.
