Terry Carter, the actor who originated Colonel Saul Tigh in ABC’s original Battlestar Galactica, died at his New York City home on April 23, 2024. He was 95. The Los Angeles Times reported that no cause of death was disclosed.
What was Terry Carter known for?
Carter’s best-known television roles spanned comedy, crime drama and science fiction. He played Private “Sugie” Sugarman on The Phil Silvers Show from 1955 to 1959, Sergeant Joe Broadhurst on McCloud, and Colonel Saul Tigh on the original Battlestar Galactica, which aired from 1978 to 1979, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Colonel Saul Tigh in the original ‘Battlestar Galactica’
Carter originated the role of Colonel Saul Tigh in ABC’s original series. Tigh was a senior officer in the Colonial Fleet, making Carter part of the show’s central ensemble during its 1978–79 run.
Sergeant Joe Broadhurst on ‘McCloud’
On McCloud, Carter played Sergeant Joe Broadhurst opposite Dennis Weaver. The role followed his earlier sitcom work and preceded his science-fiction part as Tigh.

Carter appeared as Private “Sugie” Sugarman on the sitcom from 1955 to 1959, an early screen role noted in the Los Angeles Times obituary.

Carter died on April 23, 2024, at age 95. The Television Academy biography records his birth date as December 16, 1928, and his passing date as April 23, 2024. The Los Angeles Times reported that he died at his New York City home; its April 24 report said no cause was disclosed.

What else did Carter do in his career?
Beyond acting, Carter worked in theatre, directed and produced, and had a career as a television journalist. He also founded Council for Positive Images, according to the Los Angeles Times.
The Television Academy describes Carter as an “Emmy-nominated actor and director.” Its record lists one 1989 nomination for Outstanding Informational Special for A Duke Named Ellington, an episode of PBS’s American Masters. It also records two terms as a Television Academy governor. The Academy’s credits include The Fall Guy and films such as Foxy Brown, Benji, Hamilton and Company of Killers.
