Rock am Ring’s June 2, 2017 program was suspended and the festival grounds evacuated after police said they had received concrete indications of a possible terrorist threat. Police later reported that a search found nothing, and the festival resumed the next day. No attack was reported.
Why was Rock am Ring evacuated?
Rock am Ring was held at the Nürburgring in Nürburg, Germany, from June 2 to 4, 2017. In a notice issued at 21:17 on June 2, Koblenz police said the organizer had ended that day’s program in close coordination with security forces. Police cited “concrete indications” and said a possible terrorist threat could not be ruled out, but did not initially provide precise details. The police notice also said security arrangements had already been adjusted and police numbers increased in light of the Manchester concert attack.
The distinction matters: police described a threat that could not be excluded, not a confirmed attack. Their stated reason for suspending the event was to rule out danger to festivalgoers as far as possible.
What prompted the alarm?
The initial police announcement did not explain the underlying indications. A June 3 report by the Deutsche Presse-Agentur, republished by DIE ZEIT, later said the alarm followed discrepancies between people’s identities and the names registered on access badges for security-sensitive areas. That explanation comes from the agency report, not the initial police notice. DIE ZEIT’s DPA report said three men had been released and that authorities then reported no concrete suspicion against them while an investigation continued.

What did police find, and did the festival continue?
Police searched the festival grounds and reported a negative result. After the search, the area was returned to the organizer. Contemporaneous Deutschlandfunk coverage also reported that nothing suspicious had been found and that three people had been temporarily detained. Deutschlandfunk’s June 3 report covered the resumption.
The program restarted on June 3, 30 minutes later than scheduled, according to the police after-action account. The interruption therefore affected the June 2 program; it did not cancel the entire festival.

How large was the response?
In its June 5 after-action release, Koblenz police estimated that about 87,000 visitors attended over the event, with most arriving on May 31 and June 1. Police also reported deploying about 1,400 personnel over the event, including additional personnel and special units during the interruption. These are police-reported approximate figures, not independently audited counts. The release does not give a separate count of people evacuated. The after-action release records the search result and restart as well as those estimates.
