His work ranged from producing the Byrds to co-writing the Beach Boys’ “Kokomo,” while his connection to the Benedict Canyon house later associated with the Tate murders became the subject of a widely repeated, discounted rumor.
How Terry Melcher shaped the California sound
Melcher’s career brought him from recording as Terry Day to Columbia Records’ producer-trainee program. He composed songs for films starring his mother, Doris Day, and worked with Bruce Johnston before producing recordings by the Byrds. Contemporary obituaries credit his production work with helping define the group’s California folk-rock sound. The Guardian’s obituary and the Los Angeles Times obituary describe that progression and his Byrds work.

His work extended beyond records. The Los Angeles Times reported that Melcher produced shows, including the Monterey Pop Festival, and worked with artists such as Paul Revere and the Raiders and the Mamas and the Papas. ABC News’ 2004 report also described him as a singer, songwriter, pianist, composer and producer, associated with both the Beach Boys and the Byrds.
“Kokomo” and his songwriting work
Melcher co-wrote the Beach Boys’ “Kokomo” with Mike Love, Scott McKenzie and John Phillips. The song appeared in the 1988 film Cocktail and received a Golden Globe nomination, according to the Los Angeles Times. That later hit was one part of a career spanning songwriting, performing and production.

His connection to the Tate murders—and what investigators discounted
Melcher had a connection to the Benedict Canyon house later associated with the Tate murders. A rumor circulated that Charles Manson intended to kill Melcher because Melcher had rejected an opportunity to record him. The Washington Post’s reprint of a Los Angeles Times obituary says investigators discounted that purported motive; it should not be treated as established fact. The Washington Post account recounts the house connection and the rumor’s later rejection. This episode is a small part of Melcher’s biography, not a description of his musical work.
