There is no objective way to rank which 2025 horror movie is most terrifying: a missing-child mystery, a gory fairy-tale retelling and a twist-heavy domestic story unsettle viewers in different ways. These five picks offer distinct hooks so you can choose the kind of unease you want, rather than treating critics’ scores as a measure of fear.
Five 2025 horror movies to try, by scare style
Rotten Tomatoes’ guide, published by Alex Vo on January 5, 2026, lists these films with Tomatometer scores. Those percentages reflect critic reception at the time the guide was checked; they are not scariness ratings, and can change as the guide updates.
| Film | Tomatometer | What it offers | Best fit if you want… |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sinners | 97% (Rotten Tomatoes, 2026 snapshot) | Twin brothers return to their hometown to start over, only to encounter something worse. The guide’s consensus highlights music and visual storytelling. | A hometown story with a strong sense of period, music and atmosphere. |
| The Ugly Stepsister | 96% (Rotten Tomatoes, 2026 snapshot) | A twisted Cinderella story follows Elvira as she competes with her beautiful stepsister; the consensus calls out gore and subversion. | A familiar fairy tale turned grotesque, with body and gore elements. |
| Weapons | 93% (Rotten Tomatoes, 2026 snapshot) | All but one child in a class mysteriously vanish on the same night, setting up an interrelated, multistory mystery. | Community-wide mystery and escalating dread. |
| Companion | 93% (Rotten Tomatoes, 2026 snapshot) | The guide calls it a new kind of love story; its consensus points to twists and dark domestic bliss. | A twist-driven premise. Go in without seeking plot details. |
| Good Boy | 90% (Rotten Tomatoes, 2026 snapshot) | Indy the dog joins his human owner Todd, who leaves city life for a long-vacant family home. | An unconventional, animal-centered haunting premise. |
How to choose the right kind of fear
- For a fairy tale made unsettling: Pick The Ugly Stepsister if the idea of Cinderella reframed through competition, bodily unease and gore appeals to you.
- For a puzzle that spreads through a community: Weapons starts with a class of children disappearing, leaving a mystery larger than one household.
- For surprise and domestic tension: Companion is the choice for viewers drawn to a love-story setup with twists. Avoid trailers or summaries if you want to preserve surprises.
- For a less conventional haunting: Good Boy centers its premise on a dog and his owner’s move to an empty family home.
- For music and visual atmosphere: Sinners centers on twin brothers returning home and is characterized by the guide as a period- and hometown-inflected story.
The available descriptions do not provide a consistent scale for jump scares, gore, supernatural content or psychological intensity across all five. Use the premises as orientation, not as a promise about exactly how each film will affect you.
What the critics’ ranking does—and does not—tell you
Rotten Tomatoes orders its recent-horror guide by Tomatometer, and the guide notes that its charts change as new movies are added. In its January 5, 2026 guide, the figures shown here range from 90% to 97%. A higher percentage means stronger critic reception on that snapshot, not that a film is more frightening, more popular with audiences or right for every viewer.

Rotten Tomatoes’ Critics Consensus for Weapons says: “Zach Cregger spins an expertly crafted yarn of terrifying mystery and thrilling intrigue in Weapons, a sophomore triumph that solidifies his status as a master of horror.” That is the guide’s consensus wording, not a quotation from one named critic.

The five recommendations are a selective set, not a complete calendar or definitive ranking of every 2025 horror release. Rotten Tomatoes’ release guide also lists several other titles and dates; those dates reflect that guide’s release context and do not establish a worldwide opening date.
- Rosario: Listed for May 2, 2025, with a family-legacy story involving occult artifacts inherited from the protagonist’s grandmother.
- The Conjuring: Last Rites: Listed for September 5, 2025. The guide describes it as the ninth overall Conjuring Universe film and says the story could continue.
- The Hand That Rocks the Cradle: 20th Century Studios lists its release as October 22, 2025, and categorizes it as horror, suspense and thriller. The studio says it is streaming on Hulu and with Hulu on Disney+; availability can vary by territory and change over time.
- Frankenstein: Rotten Tomatoes’ guide lists it for November 2025 on Netflix. That editorial listing is not a guarantee of current availability in every country.
For a franchise entry such as The Conjuring: Last Rites, series familiarity may affect how much context you bring to the story. The sources cited here do not establish a complete streaming calendar or current availability across regions, so check the relevant service in your country before planning a watch.
