In a Guardian interview published August 15, 2024, she recalled that the image came from the final take of an all-day photo shoot for Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman—not from an episode of the series.
How the cape photo came about
Hatcher told the Guardian that the shoot was intended to promote the television series and lasted all day. She said she initially wore a white blouse and pencil skirt with the cape over them. At the last take, someone suggested trying the cape without the blouse.
Hatcher recalled questioning what that would imply about Lois Lane, then agreeing to try it “as a lark.” She described the resulting image as evocative. Her account is a recollection given in 2024, rather than a contemporary production record.
Why Hatcher says she is still proud of it
Looking back, Hatcher told the Guardian: “Now I’m so much older, I still feel proud of it.” The remark puts the photo in the context of her own reflection on the image, rather than treating it only as a provocative publicity shot.

Was the photo in an episode of Lois & Clark?
No. The image was promotional material, not an onscreen scene, according to ComicBook.com’s August 19, 2024 recap of the Guardian interview. The series aired from 1993 to 1997 and ran for four seasons and 88 episodes, ComicBook.com reports.
Did the photo really “break the internet”?
Hatcher joked in the interview, “I broke the internet when we still had dial-up.” The Guardian’s reader question also referred to the image as “the most downloaded photo on the internet,” but the sources cited here do not establish a download count, ranking, or independent measurement. Those phrases are best understood as part of the story around the image, not verified statistics.
