Suits LA arrives with a new city, lead and legal world, rather than simply transplanting the original series’ New York firm. But in Brittany Frederick’s review of the February 23, 2025 premiere, that difference is a mixed blessing: the show has room to form its own identity, while familiar Suits beats make it harder for the new cast to establish theirs.
What is different about Suits LA?
The spinoff centers on Ted Black, a former federal prosecutor who returns to Los Angeles and represents powerful clients at Black Lane Law, a firm handling criminal and entertainment law. Stephen Amell plays Ted. The reported pilot cast also includes Josh McDermitt, Lex Scott Davis, Bryan Greenberg and Troy Winbush.
That setup moves the franchise away from the original Suits’ New York corporate-law world. Hollywood’s entertainment business could supply distinctive legal conflicts and a different kind of professional pressure. For Frederick, though, the premiere does not yet make enough of that opportunity.
Is Suits LA like the original Suits?
Frederick’s central point is that Suits LA is not a carbon copy of the original, and that this is both an opportunity and a challenge. It has a new lead, ensemble, firm and setting, but recognizable franchise elements invite comparison before the newcomers have fully found their voices.

That tension shapes the pilot’s first impression: the series is distinct enough to have its own direction, yet its familiar beats can cast a long shadow. Frederick sees potential in some of the storylines, but argues that the new characters are still finding their footing. This is her assessment of the premiere, not evidence of a wider fan or critic consensus.
Does the premiere make its cast and setting feel distinctive?
The useful test is not whether the new show resembles Suits at all, but whether Ted and his colleagues become compelling on their own terms—and whether Los Angeles entertainment law creates conflicts the original’s corporate setting could not. The premise gives the show a plausible route to distinction. Frederick’s review suggests the pilot has not fully taken that route yet, leaving the setting’s promise clearer than its payoff.

When did Suits LA premiere?
The pilot debuted on NBC on February 23, 2025. A contemporaneous MovieWeb recap reported that episodes aired Sundays at 9 p.m. and streamed on Peacock the following day; that describes the 2025 schedule, not confirmed current availability.
