GIA describes the typical old mine cut as having a softly squared outline, a relatively small table, a high crown and a large culet—the small facet at the bottom of the diamond. GIA gives 58 facets as a general characteristic of the style; that number is not a separately confirmed specification for Swift’s diamond. Large facets can create a different light pattern from a modern round brilliant: old mine cuts generally show less brilliance and more fire, meaning visible flashes of spectral color.
The old European cut is related historically but is not another name for an old mine cut. GIA distinguishes it by its rounder outline and smaller culet. The cited reports do not establish the diamond’s carat weight, color, clarity, geographic origin or verified purchase price. The Associated Press said Paine provided no further details after identifying the cut. Price claims repeated in celebrity coverage should therefore be treated as estimates, not confirmed facts.
Calling the stone an old mine brilliant cut identifies a historic cutting style; it does not reveal the diamond’s precise dimensions, grading, history or value. Nor do the cited reports provide a direct, on-record technical description of the ring from Swift or Kelce.

Why does the setting matter for an old mine cut?
GIA notes that antique diamonds can have thin girdles, the narrow edge around a diamond’s widest part, which may benefit from a protective setting. The bezel described by the Associated Press surrounds the stone’s perimeter with metal.
