Taylor Swift faced two separate waves of AI-generated false imagery in 2024: sexually explicit images circulated online in January, and images falsely suggesting she backed Donald Trump’s campaign spread in August. Swift publicly addressed the political images in September, saying they heightened her concerns about AI and misinformation. She did not thereby make a public statement about the January incident.
What happened with the Taylor Swift AI images?
The phrase “Taylor Swift AI backlash” refers to two distinct episodes, not one continuous incident. Both involved fabricated depictions of Swift, but the content, harm and public response differed.
| Episode | What the images falsely depicted | Public response |
|---|---|---|
| January 2024 | Sexually explicit images falsely depicting Swift circulated widely, particularly on X. The Associated Press reported that some also reached Facebook and other platforms. Associated Press | Fans reported accounts and shared positive Swift imagery. X temporarily blocked searches for her, then said it had restored search and would keep monitoring for the content. Reuters |
| August–September 2024 | AI-generated images shared by Donald Trump on Truth Social falsely suggested Swift and her fans supported his presidential campaign. Swift had not endorsed him. ABC News | Swift addressed the false political imagery in an Instagram post on September 10, then announced her support for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz. TechCrunch |
Why were the two incidents different?
January: fabricated explicit imagery
The January images were nonconsensual, sexually explicit fabrications. Their central harm was the unauthorized and degrading use of Swift’s likeness. The response included fan efforts to report accounts and platform moderation. The Associated Press documented their circulation; neither the images nor their circulation make them authentic photographs.
August: fabricated political speech
The August imagery falsely attributed political support to Swift. It presented a fabricated endorsement, not a real one. Swift’s September statement responded to this political misinformation and made her actual position clear: she supported Harris and Walz.

What did Taylor Swift say about AI deepfakes?
In her September 10, 2024 Instagram post, published after the presidential debate, Swift wrote that the false political images “really conjured up my fears around AI, and the dangers of spreading misinformation.” Her statement referred to the fabricated campaign-support imagery. It should not be read as a response to the separate January explicit-image incident.
The reporting reviewed does not establish a directly attributed statement from Swift or her representatives about the January images. Contemporaneous reporting documented the incident and platform response, while Swift’s later post addressed the political episode.

How did officials and platforms respond?
White House condemnation
On January 26, 2024, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre called the fake images “alarming.” She said social media companies had an important role in enforcing their own rules against misinformation and nonconsensual intimate imagery. Her remarks were a public call for platform action and legislative attention, not an announcement that a new federal law had been enacted. Reuters
X’s search restrictions
Late in January, X temporarily blocked searches for Swift after the explicit images spread. The company later said search had been re-enabled and that it would continue monitoring and remove the content if found. That was X’s description of its response; it does not establish that every copy was removed. Reuters

What legal development followed?
On March 21, 2024, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee signed the Ensuring Likeness, Voice and Image Security (ELVIS) Act. The governor’s office described it as an update to Tennessee personal-rights law addressing AI misuse of performers’ voices and likenesses. It is a Tennessee state law, not a federal protection, and this account does not assess the current status or reach of other laws. Tennessee Governor’s Office
