Taylor Swift praised Charli XCX’s songwriting and “melodic sensibilities” in a comment attributed to a Vulture profile and reported by The Independent on August 26, 2024. The praise came amid online speculation that Charli’s song “Sympathy Is a Knife” targeted Swift, but Charli described the track as being about her own feelings and anxiety. Neither the reported speculation nor the song establishes that the artists were feuding.
What Taylor Swift said about Charli XCX
Swift’s praise, as The Independent reported it from a Vulture profile, was expansive: “I’ve been blown away by Charli’s melodic sensibilities since I first heard ‘Stay Away’ in 2011. Her writing is surreal and inventive, always. She just takes a song to places you wouldn’t expect it to go, and she’s been doing it consistently for over a decade. I love to see hard work like that pay off.”
Swift’s remark recognized Charli’s musical instincts and songwriting over time. The Independent’s August 26, 2024 report placed it in the context of public speculation about the artists; it did not establish a personal dispute.
Why fans connected Charli’s song to Swift
Much of the 2024 discussion centered on “Sympathy Is a Knife,” a track on Charli XCX’s album BRAT. Listeners interpreted its lyrics through the lens of Charli’s past connection to Swift’s 2018 Reputation Stadium Tour, where Charli opened for Swift. That connection was a fan interpretation, not confirmation of the song’s subject.

Charli’s own explanation was personal. The Independent quoted her saying the song was about “me and my feelings and my anxiety” and about “the way my brain creates narratives and stories in my head when I feel insecure.” She added, “People are gonna think what they want to think.” Her account describes an internal experience; it does not identify Swift as the target.
What happened on the 2018 tour
Discussion of the song also drew on comments Charli made about performing for a young audience during the Reputation Stadium Tour. TIME later recounted that the remark drew backlash and quoted Charli clarifying: “I’m really grateful that [Taylor] asked me on that tour. But as an artist, it kind of felt like I was getting up on stage and waving to 5-year-olds.” TIME also reported her explanation that she was grateful for the opportunity and had intended no shade. The remark and its clarification provide context for fan interpretations, but do not prove a feud.

Did ‘Actually Romantic’ confirm a feud?
No. In an October 3, 2025 report, TIME covered fan theories that Swift’s “Actually Romantic” referred to Charli. TIME presented that connection as speculation, not as a confirmed identification of the song’s subject. A reading of lyrics, even when widely discussed, is not evidence that either artist has confirmed a personal conflict.

What is established—and what remains speculation
- Established: Swift praised Charli’s songwriting and musical instincts in a comment attributed to Vulture and reported by The Independent in August 2024.
- Established: Charli said “Sympathy Is a Knife” was about her own emotions, anxiety, and insecurity.
- Reported as interpretation: Fans connected that song, and later Swift’s “Actually Romantic,” to the other artist.
