The best-supported answer is that Taylor Swift and Blake Lively experienced serious strain during the Justin Baldoni litigation, but no public record confirms a permanent friendship breakup. Unsealed text messages show Swift objecting to how Lively was communicating in December 2024. Later reports from anonymous sources disagreed about whether the two stopped speaking. Swift’s documented connection to It Ends with Us was licensing her song “My Tears Ricochet,” not producing, casting or creatively controlling the film.
What happened between Taylor Swift and Blake Lively?
Messages unsealed in January 2026 show Swift and Lively discussing tension in their friendship in December 2024. Swift said Lively’s messages felt unusually formal and impersonal, while Lively apologized for being consumed by her own problems.
The exchange demonstrates a difficult conversation and a change in tone. It does not establish that the friendship ended, that Baldoni alone caused the change, or that either woman made a public final decision about the relationship.
What Swift wrote
In text messages reported by the Associated Press, Swift wrote: “It’s more like… and I feel really bad saying anything about this because your texts have been so nice in their intent but your last few… it’s felt like I was reading a mass corporate email sent to 200 employees. You said the word ‘we’ like 18 times.”

She also wrote: “I just kinda miss my dark, normal-speaking friend who talks to me as herself, not like. A plural unit.”
What Lively’s reply shows
The reported exchange includes Lively apologizing for being consumed by her own problems. That supports the interpretation that both women recognized strain, but the published messages do not provide a definitive account of what happened afterward.
Are Swift and Lively still friends?
There is no publicly confirmed permanent breakup. Public reporting has produced conflicting accounts:
Rank #2
| Date | Report or record | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| 2014 onward | Public appearances and reporting documented a longstanding friendship. | A public relationship existed; social-media proximity cannot prove their private feelings. |
| December 2024 | Unsealed messages show the two addressing tension. | They were experiencing strain and trying to discuss it; the messages do not prove a final rupture. |
| January 2025 | Us Magazine, citing an unnamed source, said the friendship had not been affected. | An anonymous-source account, not a confirmed fact. |
| August 2025 | Marie Claire, citing People, reported that they were not speaking. | A later anonymous-source account that conflicts with the January report. |
| January 2026 | The December 2024 texts became public through litigation discovery. | Directly reported messages reveal strain but not the current private status of the friendship. |
Because the positive and negative friendship updates came from unnamed sources, they should be treated as reports rather than proof. The litigation’s resolution also does not publicly settle the women’s personal relationship.
Was Taylor Swift involved in It Ends with Us?
Swift’s documented involvement was licensing “My Tears Ricochet” for the film. Her representative denied that she had a production role. TheWrap quoted the representative saying: “Taylor Swift never set foot on the set of this movie, she was not involved in any casting or creative decisions, she did not score the film, she did not even see It Ends With Us until weeks after its public release.”
That statement distinguishes a music license from control over the movie’s casting, script, editing, score or production. It also means claims that Swift directed or approved the film’s creative choices go beyond the documented evidence.
Did Taylor Swift testify against Blake Lively?
No public evidence in the available court reporting establishes that Swift testified against Lively. Baldoni’s lawyers sought information from Swift through the litigation, including an effort to subpoena her, but a subpoena or discovery request is a legal procedure—not a finding that a witness gave damaging testimony.
The unsealed texts became public as part of discovery. Their release should not be confused with Swift appearing as a trial witness or taking a public position against Lively.

The filings
Lively sued Justin Baldoni and related parties after filing a complaint with California’s Civil Rights Department and then filing a federal case on December 31, 2024. The allegations in a complaint are claims by a party, not judicial findings.
Baldoni and Wayfarer filed a countersuit. The Associated Press reported that the countersuit was dismissed in June 2025.
The April 2, 2026 ruling
The Associated Press reported that Judge Lewis J. Liman dismissed Lively’s sexual-harassment claims on April 2, 2026, while allowing her retaliation claims to continue at that stage. A ruling that dismisses one set of claims while leaving another alive is procedural; it does not by itself resolve every factual dispute raised by the parties.
The reported settlement
A docket mirror records a May 7, 2026 notice of settlement and joint stipulation dismissing the related actions before the planned May 18 trial. That entry should be checked against the official federal docket for the definitive procedural status. A settlement or stipulated dismissal ends the litigation; it does not publicly determine whether Swift and Lively remain close.

How to weigh the competing claims
- Unsealed messages: These are the most direct evidence of the women’s communication in December 2024, although they cover only that exchange.
- Court orders and docket entries: These establish procedural events such as dismissals, notices and stipulations. They do not automatically prove the underlying allegations.
- Named-source reporting: AP’s account of the ruling and messages, Vogue’s litigation timeline and TheWrap’s quotation of Swift’s representative are stronger than unattributed gossip because they identify the reporting or quoted speaker.
- Anonymous-source friendship updates: The January and August 2025 reports conflict, so neither should be presented as a confirmed status update.
- Social-media activity: Following, unfollowing, likes or absences can have many explanations and cannot establish a private friendship outcome on their own.
What can responsibly be said now?
Swift and Lively had a documented friendship and, by their own unsealed messages, a strained exchange during the period when Lively’s dispute with Baldoni was escalating. The record does not confirm a permanent breakup. Swift was connected to It Ends with Us through a licensed song, not through production decisions, and there is no established evidence that she testified against Lively.
The legal cases changed status over time: Lively’s sexual-harassment claims were dismissed in April 2026, retaliation claims survived that ruling, Baldoni’s countersuit had already been dismissed in June 2025, and a docket mirror later recorded a settlement stipulation in May 2026. Those court developments explain why the texts became public, but they do not answer a private question the women themselves have not conclusively answered in public.
