Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F—often called “Beverly Hills Cop 4”—brings Eddie Murphy back as Detroit detective Axel Foley. When his estranged daughter, Jane Saunders, is threatened, Axel returns to Beverly Hills and joins her, a new police partner and longtime allies Billy Rosewood and John Taggart to investigate a conspiracy.
Why “Beverly Hills Cop 4” is actually Axel F
Netflix Tudum uses “Beverly Hills Cop 4” as a shorthand headline, but the released film is titled Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. Netflix’s official synopsis describes Axel’s return as both a police case and a family story: Jane’s safety gives him a personal reason to stay involved, while the investigation reconnects him with familiar Beverly Hills officers.

Main cast and characters
| Performer | Character | Role in the story |
|---|---|---|
| Eddie Murphy | Axel Foley | The Detroit detective returning to Beverly Hills. Murphy describes Axel as more experienced and says his relationship with Jane is the emotional reason he takes the case personally. |
| Taylour Paige | Jane Saunders | Axel’s estranged daughter, who lives in Beverly Hills and does not use his surname. Her danger brings Axel back to California. |
| Joseph Gordon-Levitt | Bobby Abbott | A young Beverly Hills Police Department detective who becomes Axel’s new partner. |
| Judge Reinhold | Billy Rosewood | Axel’s longtime ally. Billy’s investigation uncovers dangerous information and puts him on the hunt for the truth. |
| John Ashton | John Taggart | A returning Beverly Hills police contact and one of Axel’s oldest law-enforcement allies. |
| Paul Reiser | Jeffrey Friedman | Axel’s friend and contact back in Detroit, again played by Reiser. |
| Bronson Pinchot | Serge | The eccentric returning character from the original film and Beverly Hills Cop III. |
| Kevin Bacon | Cade Grant | A new Beverly Hills Police Department captain whose methods do not align with Axel’s. |
The returning franchise team
Axel Foley: Eddie Murphy
Murphy’s Axel is still a Detroit detective who relies on instinct, improvisation and an ability to unsettle people who underestimate him. The difference this time is the personal cost of the case. “He’s a whole different person with the changes that he’s made in life and his relationship with his daughter Jane,” Murphy said, calling that relationship the emotional hook that gives Axel “skin in the game.”
#1 Best Overall
Billy Rosewood: Judge Reinhold
Reinhold returns as Billy, whose discovery of a far-reaching and dangerous situation drives part of the mystery. Billy cannot simply broadcast what he knows; Reinhold says the character must be careful while pursuing the truth.
John Taggart: John Ashton
Ashton reprises Taggart, another veteran Beverly Hills connection for Axel. Ashton described returning to the role as an immediate reunion with the cast, despite the long gap since they worked together on the earlier films.
Rank #2
Jeffrey Friedman and Serge
Paul Reiser again plays Jeffrey Friedman, Axel’s man in Detroit. Bronson Pinchot returns as Serge, the memorable character introduced in the first Beverly Hills Cop and also seen in Beverly Hills Cop III.
The new and newly foregrounded characters
Jane Saunders: Taylour Paige
Jane is not merely a relative added to the cast list. She is an attorney living in Beverly Hills, an adult with her own identity and a strained relationship with Axel. Director Mark Molloy said Paige had “the same glint” and infectious energy associated with Axel while also being able to go “toe-to-toe” with him. That combination lets the film make their disagreements part of the action rather than treating Jane as a passive person to rescue.

Bobby Abbott: Joseph Gordon-Levitt
Bobby supplies the case with a younger BHPD perspective and becomes Axel’s new partner. Gordon-Levitt characterized him as emotionally intelligent, kind, capable and sensitive, but also tough in a fight. His aim, he said, was an action hero who is not “overly macho,” giving Axel a partner whose strengths are different from his own.
Cade Grant: Kevin Bacon
Bacon plays the new BHPD captain. Grant represents an institutional counterpoint to Axel’s rule-breaking methods, creating friction inside the department as the investigation develops. Bacon also noted that Footloose and the first Beverly Hills Cop arrived in the same year, making his first collaboration with Murphy a notable reunion of contemporary stars.

How the character groups fit together
- Axel’s established circle: Axel, Billy Rosewood, John Taggart, Jeffrey Friedman and Serge connect the sequel to the earlier films.
- The family stake: Jane gives Axel a relationship he cannot treat like one of his usual cases.
- The new police partnership: Bobby Abbott brings a younger, emotionally open detective into Axel’s orbit.
- The departmental obstacle: Cade Grant’s leadership and methods do not naturally accommodate Axel’s approach.
Together, these roles split the film between franchise familiarity and a new Beverly Hills case. Axel is solving a conspiracy, but he is also forced to work with people who challenge how he has handled both policing and his family.
Who is officially confirmed to return?
Netflix’s September 21, 2022 announcement confirmed Judge Reinhold, John Ashton, Paul Reiser and Bronson Pinchot as returning cast members, alongside Eddie Murphy’s return as Axel Foley. Netflix Tudum’s 2024 cast feature identifies Paige, Gordon-Levitt and Bacon as the principal additions and names their characters as Jane Saunders, Bobby Abbott and Cade Grant.
