Swifties for Kamala showed how a fan community could turn shared references, social-media habits and friendships into practical election work. In 2024, the independent volunteer coalition paired Swiftie-style online organizing with voter registration, phone banking, canvassing and targeted mail. Its reported activity offers a model for making civic participation feel approachable; it does not show that the group changed turnout or the election result.
What Swifties for Kamala was—and was not
Swifties for Kamala was a fan-led political coalition, not an organization of Taylor Swift. According to its about page, Emerald Medrano founded the effort after Joe Biden withdrew from the 2024 presidential race; it initially used the name Swifties for Harris. The coalition says Swift was not directly involved and that it was not affiliated with, endorsed by, authorized by or sponsored by her or her business entities.
That distinction matters because two different kinds of mobilization became associated with Swift in 2024: the coalition’s sustained volunteer operation and the much shorter burst of attention after Swift herself endorsed Kamala Harris. They had different organizers, channels and measurements.
How fandom became a route into election work
Start where people already gather
The organizing began with an X post from Medrano proposing a “blue wave” of Swift fans. Rather than asking newcomers to enter political spaces cold, organizers met fans in familiar online communities and used the shared language and references of the fandom. Annie Wu Henry, identified by The Washington Post as the group’s campaign manager, described the aim as “keeping everything very political and civically engaged but also everything having that layer of Swiftie-ness to it.”
The coalition used social-media accounts, a Discord community and its “Paint the Town Blue” newsletter. WIRED reported that the operation had communications, finance, outreach and social teams; social staff organized work by platform and adapted conventions of fan accounts to political updates. This was not simply posting about politics. It was a way to direct attention toward tasks people could take on together.

Turn attention into specific actions
At its August 27, 2024 kickoff call, organizers and elected officials—including Carole King—addressed attendees. The Washington Post reported that the call walked participants through door knocking, phone calls and voter registration while keeping the atmosphere recognizably fan-oriented. The coalition’s about page recounts 34,000 attendees.
The broader sequence echoed other Harris-affinity organizing: online calls helped bring people in, then volunteers could move to texts, postcards, phone banking and canvassing. The Associated Press described that progression across affinity groups. WIRED noted the distinction between independent groups and campaign coordination; Swifties for Kamala should be understood as a volunteer coalition that reported contact with the campaign, not as an official campaign department.

Use relationships as organizing infrastructure
The coalition says it used Fan Out, a relational-organizing platform, to prompt voter-registration actions and invitations to friends. The idea is that a participant can reach people they already know, rather than relying only on a public post or an unfamiliar canvasser. Madeline Miner, identified by WIRED as a Swifties-for-Kamala social media coordinator, said: “The shared interest and knowledge of the fandom is definitely a really great way to bridge that connection over to civic engagement and political activism.”

The coalition says volunteers made and distributed more than 55,000 bracelets across all 50 states and Washington, D.C., with in-person making stations at events in Pennsylvania and North Carolina. Emerald Medrano, identified by Vogue as cofounder and chairman, said: “The comfort in our Swiftie traditions has made organizing so much fun and also accessible to people who are new to politics and voting.” Those quotes explain the organizers’ approach; they are not independent evaluations of its effects.

What the coalition says it accomplished
The coalition’s retrospective impact report describes several kinds of activity. These are the group’s reported totals, not independently verified measures of votes cast or electoral impact.

The report also describes plans to continue advocacy and fundraising for North Carolina Supreme Court Justice Allison Riggs. That is a statement of the coalition’s plans in its report, not confirmation of its present-day activity.

Coalition activity is different from Swift’s endorsement traffic
On September 10, 2024, Swift endorsed Harris and linked to Vote.gov. Axios reported about 338,000 visits to the site in the following 15 hours, while cautioning that visits do not show how many people completed registration. That short-lived web-traffic figure is separate from the coalition’s cumulative volunteer activity. A visit to a registration-information site is not a registration; a registration action is not necessarily a completed registration; and registration is not a vote.

Public response was mixed in a September 2024 Monmouth University Polling Institute survey. Among 803 registered U.S. voters surveyed September 11–15, 53% approved of Swift encouraging fans to vote and 76% had heard of her endorsement. The poll, released September 19, reported a margin of error of ±3.9 percentage points. These figures describe opinion and awareness at that time, not the coalition’s effectiveness.
What this blueprint can—and cannot—show
The documented lesson is about access and organization: shared interests can help make an unfamiliar civic task feel more social, concrete and welcoming. The coalition combined online attention with roles for volunteers, direct outreach and activities that carried the community’s identity into offline settings. That mix may help explain why organizers saw fan traditions as a comfortable entry point for people new to politics or volunteering.
But a blueprint is not proof of electoral causation. The available accounts document reported actions, attendance and web traffic; they do not establish how many people became regular volunteers, voted because of the effort or changed the outcome of the 2024 presidential election or any down-ballot race. The strongest evidence supports describing a method for organizing participation—not claiming that fandom saved democracy or determined a result.
