Is the Original Swedish-Danish ‘The Bridge’ Better Than Its Remakes?

The original Bron/Broen makes its Swedish-Danish border, changing investigative partnerships and season-long character arcs work as one crime drama—giving it a strong case as the best version, though not a provable universal ranking.

For viewers who want the border to shape the crime story—not just provide a striking backdrop—the original Bron/Broen is the most satisfying version of The Bridge. That is a critical judgment, not an established consensus: its strongest case rests on how the Øresund setting, the contrasting investigators and the long-form character arcs work together.

What is the original The Bridge?

Bron/Broen is the Swedish-Danish crime series created and written by Hans Rosenfeldt. ZDF Studios lists its original language as Swedish, production years as 2010–2018, and production companies as Sweden’s Filmlance International and Denmark’s Nimbus Film Produktion. It was a joint production for SVT and DR, with Danish characters and institutions integral to the story. ZDF Studios’ catalog lists four seasons and 38 episodes: six in season one, four in season two, ten in season three and eight in season four. Its format is listed as either 38 episodes of 60 minutes or 15 installments of 110 minutes.

The first case begins with a body discovered at the midpoint of the Øresund Bridge, on the boundary between Sweden and Denmark. Malmö detective Saga Norén and Copenhagen police officer Martin Rohde are drawn into a joint investigation. The location is more than an atmospheric opening: the case makes the national border—and the need to work across it—part of the investigative premise.

Why does the original work so well?

The bridge changes how the case is told

A border can be a convenient thriller image, but it matters more when it shapes who has authority, how investigators cooperate and which communities enter the story. In Bron/Broen, the bridge’s midpoint gives the first case a direct Swedish-Danish dimension. Malmö and Copenhagen are not interchangeable scenery; the shared investigation depends on crossing between places, institutions and working cultures.

That gives the original a particular advantage over adaptations set on other borders. A remake can preserve the basic device—a crime at a boundary and investigators from either side—but it cannot simply copy the Øresund’s geography and expect the same social or institutional texture. Each location has to make its own border consequential. The original’s premise and setting are joined from the start.

Saga and her partners create the show’s human tension

Sofia Helin plays Saga Norén in all four seasons. Kim Bodnia plays Martin Rohde in seasons one and two; Thure Lindhardt plays Henrik Sabroe in seasons three and four. Charlotte Sieling, who conceptualized the series and directed its first four episodes, identifies those roles and season spans in her portfolio.

The central pairing gives the procedural its emotional counterweight. Saga’s distinctive way of approaching people and police work meets partners with different temperaments and methods. Their contrast can produce friction and humor, but it also gives the cases room to alter relationships over time. The change of partner after season two makes the series’ longer character story visible: the central investigator remains, while the relationship around her changes.

The crime plot and character arcs share the same structure

The series has to sustain two kinds of attention: the season’s investigation and the evolution of the people conducting it. The original is especially compelling when those tracks reinforce one another. Cross-border casework supplies a continuing source of practical conflict, while the changing partnerships offer a way to follow trust, communication and personal development across seasons.

This is the most useful basis for calling the original “best.” It is not a claim that every episode is stronger than every episode in every remake, or that a measurable critical consensus has settled the question. It is an assessment of how fully this version connects its core device, lead performances, setting and serialized storytelling.

How should the remakes be compared?

The format travelled into several localized versions, including the US-Mexico The Bridge and the UK-France The Tunnel. ZDF Studios names those two adaptations in its catalog. PCCW’s 2019 press release also listed remakes in Germany/Austria, Russia/Estonia and Serbia/Croatia, alongside those US-Mexico and UK-France versions; that is a dated corporate statement, not a definitive global count. The European Audiovisual Observatory’s 2025 presentation lists Germany, Greece and the UK as remake-country entries for Bron / Broen / The Bridge. Those sources use different scopes, so they do not establish a single authoritative number of remakes.

Rather than asking which version has the most faithful plot, compare what each adaptation does with the material it inherits:

  • Border and jurisdiction: Does crossing the border affect police authority and collaboration, or is it mostly a visual hook?
  • Lead chemistry: Do the investigators’ differences generate credible tension, humor and change?
  • Local setting: Does the new geography shape the cases and institutions, or could the story happen anywhere?
  • Season-long storytelling: Does the central crime develop the characters as well as sustain the mystery?

These tests leave room for a remake to succeed on its own terms. A localized version may make its particular border compelling, or offer a pairing that works better for an individual viewer. But on the combined strength of setting, partnership and serialized character work, the original remains the most coherent whole.

Where can you watch the original?

Availability depends on country and can change. Netflix’s title page currently displays a notice that the program is unavailable in the country being checked; that does not establish its status elsewhere. Check Netflix’s local title page for your region. A Prime Video search result is not enough to confirm that the series is currently watchable in a particular country, so verify any listing directly before subscribing or purchasing.
