Jeff Probst and Survivor: Vanuatu contestant Julie Berry began dating after filming ended in 2004, according to contemporaneous reports. Probst later explained that their behavior on the show reflected their roles in the game, not the relationship they developed afterward. By March 2008, he said they were no longer dating.
Who did Jeff Probst date from Survivor?
Probst dated Julie Berry, a contestant on Survivor: Vanuatu. An Associated Press report published by CBS News described Berry as one of the five contestants still in contention before her elimination aired on Dec. 9, 2004. The report said filming had ended in August. (CBS News, Dec. 17, 2004)

When did their relationship begin?
The reports place the start after filming, rather than during the competition. The Associated Press account said Probst emailed Berry to say hello after the show was over. In a January 2005 interview with TV Guide, Probst said he called her about a month after they returned from the island. He described a West Coast road trip after filming as the time they got to know each other and he began to fall in love. (TV Guide, Jan. 5, 2005)
Reality TV World later reported that they began dating in August 2004, after filming. That is a reported chronology, not a confirmed first date; the coverage does not establish an exact day the relationship began. (Reality TV World, Mar. 11, 2008)

What did Probst say about dating a contestant?
In the TV Guide interview, Probst acknowledged that Berry flirted with him during the game. He said he was harder on her because he felt she was not delivering as much as he wanted, and rejected the idea that they were carrying on a private romance during filming: “We were definitely not having our own little party out there.”
He also drew a distinction between the on-camera competition and their later relationship: “The person on Survivor is not the real me. I play a distinct role — a real hard-ass. And it was not the real Julie either; she was playing to win a million dollars.” His explanation was that their connection developed on the road trip after filming, not during the game. These are Probst’s comments as reported by TV Guide; they describe his account rather than independently establish what happened off camera.

The word “defended” can make the story sound like a documented controversy or formal response to a rule violation. The contemporaneous coverage supports a narrower description: Probst explained the difference between his host persona and Berry’s gameplay and said the romance began after filming. On March 11, 2008, Reality TV World reported Probst’s confirmation that they were no longer together: “Sadly, Julie and I are not dating anymore.” He also called it “a good love affair.” The sources establish a relationship that began after filming in 2004 and had ended by March 2008, but they do not provide exact start or breakup dates. So an exact duration—such as a settled four years—cannot be established from these reports.
