X said it was removing identified material and acting against responsible accounts, and temporarily blocked searches for Swift’s name before restoring them later in the month. Those were distinct responses; none established that the images had disappeared everywhere.
What happened on X
By January 25–26, 2024, explicit, nonconsensual fabricated images depicting Swift were circulating widely on X. The Associated Press reported that material also reached Facebook and other platforms. The available reporting does not establish who made the images or which tools were used.
AP reported that researchers had found at least a couple dozen unique AI-generated images. That was a reported minimum, not a complete count of everything circulating. Reality Defender told AP that some images reached “millions and millions” of users before some were taken down; its representative’s estimate was not an audited total of views across the incident. Associated Press, January 26, 2024.
How fans fought back
Promoting supportive posts
Fans posted positive images and other Swift-related material, including posts using #ProtectTaylorSwift. The aim was to give supportive content more visibility amid the abusive material.

Reporting accounts
Fans also reported accounts sharing the fabricated images, directing attention toward the people distributing them rather than amplifying the material itself. AP covered the hashtag, supportive posts and reports; TechCrunch’s January 25 report described fans trying to bury searches associated with the incident.
Trying to bury related searches
TechCrunch identified “taylor swift ai” and “taylor swift deepfake” as search phrases fans were trying to push down by posting other content. These are historical examples from its coverage, not evidence about current X search results.

What X did—and what its response establishes
Removal and account action
X said its teams were removing identified images and taking action against the accounts responsible. AP quoted the company on January 26: “Our teams are actively removing all identified images and taking appropriate actions against the accounts responsible for posting them.” That describes X’s stated policy and activity; it does not independently verify how quickly or completely material was removed.
A temporary search block
X also temporarily blocked searches for Swift’s name while the images were circulating. News reports said those searches were restored on January 29. A search restriction limited access through that query; it was separate from removing posts or taking action against accounts, and does not show that the images were eliminated from X or other platforms. Why SAG-AFTRA condemned the images
On January 26, 2024, SAG-AFTRA called the images harmful and urged stronger legal protection. Its statement said: “The sexually explicit, A.I.-generated images depicting Taylor Swift are upsetting, harmful, and deeply concerning.” The union argued that making and distributing fabricated images without consent should be illegal. That is the union’s position and call for legal change, not a description of what current law provides. Read SAG-AFTRA’s statement.

- Fan-led visibility and reporting: Supportive posts and reports offered ways to oppose distribution without sharing the images themselves.
- Platform moderation: X said it was removing identified material and acting against responsible accounts; the cited coverage does not establish a complete removal count.
- Search restriction: Temporarily blocking searches for Swift’s name was a separate access measure, not proof that the content had been removed everywhere.
The reporting documents a rapid fan response alongside platform actions, but it does not establish a definitive incident-wide total of images, views, posts or takedowns.
