Sweet as You Are is a hard-to-find BBC television drama about marriage, infidelity and the fear surrounding HIV during the 1980s AIDS crisis. It stars Liam Neeson as Martin Perry, a lecturer who tests positive for HIV after an affair with a student, and Miranda Richardson as his wife, Julia. The documented UK television transmission was January 24, 1988, although many databases describe the production as a 1987 film.
In the United States, the drama is not currently listed as available to stream on the services checked, and no verified authorized DVD, Blu-ray or digital edition was found. Availability may change, so viewers interested in the title should monitor major title trackers and specialist British-television catalogs.
What is Sweet as You Are about?
Sweet as You Are follows Martin Perry, a college lecturer who has had an affair with one of his students. After Martin tests positive for HIV, he has to tell Julia, his wife, that his infidelity may have exposed her to infection.
That disclosure creates several overlapping crises. Julia must confront the possibility that her husband could die, the possibility that she may have been infected, and the fact that Martin has betrayed her through the affair. Their daughter, Katie, is also caught in the pressure placed on the family.

The drama is therefore not simply a story about illness. Its central subject is the collapse of trust inside a marriage when a private sexual decision becomes a threat to an entire household. The film also examines the different ways Martin and Julia respond to sexuality, responsibility and fear.
Writer William Nicholson later explained that he began with the situation of a husband telling his wife that he was HIV-positive after a heterosexual affair. Nicholson described the story as being driven by three threats for the wife: her husband’s possible death, her own possible infection and the betrayal caused by his conduct. He also emphasized that he was interested in differing male and female attitudes toward sexuality, rather than writing a conventional medical drama.
Is Sweet as You Are a documentary?
No. Despite appearing on a documentary-focused site, Sweet as You Are is a scripted British television drama. It was associated with the BBC’s Screen Two strand and was directed by Angela Pope from a script by William Nicholson.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIts historical importance comes from the way it reflects the late-1980s AIDS crisis. At that time, public anxiety about HIV was intense, and heterosexual transmission was a particularly significant subject in public discussion. The drama uses that anxiety to explore secrecy, stigma, marriage and responsibility.
It should be understood as a period drama, not as current medical information. Language, assumptions and the social atmosphere in the production reflect the knowledge and fears of the 1980s. Anyone seeking current information about HIV testing, transmission, treatment or prevention should use up-to-date public-health guidance rather than the film.

Rotten Tomatoes displays a historical streaming date of November 30, 2016, but that entry does not establish that the title is available now. It should not be treated as a current streaming listing.
The most accurate practical advice is to search by both title variations—Sweet as You Are and Sweet As You Are—and to check specialist catalogs for rare British television. The absence of a current U.S. listing does not prove that the drama can never return to a platform, or that no private archive or regional listing exists elsewhere.
Is there a trailer?
Rotten Tomatoes has a catalog entry for Sweet as You Are with a “Play Trailer” listing. However, the research available for this article did not establish a consistently playable official trailer hosted by the BBC, a rights holder or a major authorized video service.
Search results also surfaced an online video page labeled Screen Two – Sweet as You Are (1988). Its authorization and provenance were not verified, so it should not be presented as an official trailer or recommended as a legitimate viewing source.

When was Sweet as You Are released?
The title has two commonly cited dates:
- 1987: the production year used by some databases, including Filmdienst.

These dates are not necessarily contradictory. The 1987 date can refer to production or cataloging, while January 24, 1988 identifies the television broadcast. The drama is best described as a 1987 production that was transmitted in the UK in January 1988.

It did not win the award. The BAFTA went to Tumbledown.
The drama’s later history also illustrates how difficult it has been to access. In a BAFTA lecture, Nicholson referred to the BBC production as having become difficult to find. He noted that BAFTA and the BFI had located a battered Betamax copy for a retrospective presentation. That account is part of the title’s archival history, but it does not amount to a current commercial release or a general public streaming option.
Why the drama remains of interest
The most distinctive feature of Sweet as You Are is its decision to make heterosexual transmission, rather than a more familiar set of AIDS-era narratives, the source of the family crisis. Martin’s diagnosis is inseparable from the affair that preceded it. The result is a story in which medical fear and moral accountability continually collide.
Julia is not asked to deal with only one question. She must consider what Martin’s diagnosis could mean for his future, what it could mean for her own health, and whether the marriage can survive the betrayal. Katie’s presence adds another layer: the adults’ private crisis inevitably affects the emotional stability of the family around them.
That structure gives the drama continuing value as television history. It shows how the AIDS crisis entered domestic storytelling, where public health fears were expressed through marriage, parenthood and the possibility that one person’s secrecy could endanger another. It also provides a record of the period’s uncertainty and stigma—precisely why its medical framing should be treated as historical rather than authoritative today.

The runtime is also inconsistent: most records cluster around 69–70 minutes, while one major catalog gives 75 minutes. That discrepancy should not be used to infer that two entirely different titles exist without further evidence.
Should you add it to a watchlist?
If you are interested in rare British television, AIDS-era drama, William Nicholson’s early work, or performances by Liam Neeson and Miranda Richardson, Sweet as You Are is a notable title to track. Its scarcity is a practical limitation: at the time of research, there was no verified mainstream U.S. streaming source or authorized physical release.
For viewers who do locate a legitimate screening, the best approach is to treat it as both a domestic drama and a historical document. Its value lies less in supplying medical answers than in showing how HIV, sexuality, guilt and stigma were represented on British television in the late 1980s.
