Suzanne Morphew’s death was officially classified as a homicide by unspecified or undetermined means in the setting of intoxication with BAM. BAM is the combination of butorphanol, azaperone and medetomidine. The autopsy did not identify a specific injury or physical killing method, and the later indictment against Barry Morphew remains an accusation—not a conviction.

Officially, Suzanne Morphew’s death was classified as a homicide caused by unspecified or undetermined means in the setting of intoxication with butorphanol, azaperone and medetomidine—the three-drug combination known as BAM. The finding does not identify a particular injury, injection site or physical killing method.

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation announced the autopsy conclusion on April 29, 2024. The later indictment against Barry Morphew uses slightly different wording, describing “homicide by unspecified means” in the setting of BAM intoxication. The two formulations carry the same essential meaning: investigators and the coroner classified the death as a homicide, but the available forensic evidence did not establish precisely how Suzanne died.

What the autopsy determined—and what it did not

Suzanne Morphew disappeared in May 2020. Her remains were found in September 2023 near Moffat in Saguache County, Colorado, more than three years later. According to the 2025 grand-jury indictment, the recovery included most of her bones, a cancer port and clothing items, some of which were consistent with the bicycle clothing she was known to be wearing.

The El Paso County coroner performed the autopsy. The indictment states that no visible perimortem trauma—injury occurring around the time of death—was observed. It also describes extensive bleaching and forensic indications that the body may not have decomposed at the location where the remains were eventually discovered.

Those conditions limited the conclusions available to forensic pathologists. The autopsy did not name a specific blunt-force injury, gunshot wound, strangulation injury or other physical mechanism. Nor did the official findings identify a visible injection site. The conclusion was narrower and more precise: homicide in the setting of intoxication with BAM, with the means left unspecified or undetermined.

What is BAM?

BAM is a combination of three drugs:

  • Butorphanol
  • Azaperone
  • Medetomidine

The indictment describes BAM as a prescription-regulated combination used to sedate animals. It also alleges that it was not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for use in humans. The drugs are administered by injection in the veterinary context.

Testing of Suzanne’s bone marrow detected all three components, as well as a metabolite of butorphanol. The metabolite mattered to investigators because it was cited as evidence that the butorphanol had been metabolized in her body before death, rather than having been introduced only after death. The indictment also says an expert testified that BAM does not produce instantaneous sedation.

That toxicology evidence is significant, but it must be described carefully. Detecting BAM does not, by itself, prove who administered it, how it was administered or whether the drugs alone explain every aspect of the death. The prosecution separately relies on its broader theory of the case to accuse Barry Morphew. The autopsy finding and the prosecution’s attribution are related but distinct propositions.

Why the exact cause remains qualified

“Cause of death” and “manner of death” are not interchangeable terms.

Term Meaning in this case
Cause of death The disease, injury, poisoning or physiological event that produced death. The official wording places BAM intoxication in the setting of the death but does not specify a more exact lethal mechanism.
Manner of death The broader classification of how the death occurred. Suzanne’s manner of death was classified as homicide.

It is therefore imprecise to reduce the finding to “Suzanne Morphew died of BAM poisoning” without qualification. The official conclusion did not simply announce an ordinary toxic poisoning as a standalone cause. It identified homicide and BAM intoxication in the setting of death while leaving the precise means undetermined or unspecified.

The difference is important. A forensic conclusion can classify a death as homicide even when investigators cannot establish the exact physical mechanism from the remains. In this case, the condition of the remains and the absence of visible perimortem trauma help explain why the conclusion stops short of naming a specific method.

How the finding appears in the case against Barry Morphew

On June 18, 2025, a Colorado grand jury indicted Barry Morphew on a charge of first-degree murder after deliberation. The indictment alleges that he caused Suzanne’s death between May 9 and May 10, 2020. It cites the BAM finding as part of the prosecution’s case.

The indictment also contains allegations about access to the drugs. It says Barry Morphew had previously obtained BAM by prescription and that records showed his last purchase occurred in March 2018. It further alleges that, during the relevant period, no other private citizen or business in surrounding Colorado counties had purchased BAM prescriptions, while wildlife agencies had access to it.

Those statements are allegations and evidentiary claims presented by prosecutors in an indictment. They are not findings that Barry Morphew administered the drugs, and they are not a substitute for proof at trial. The toxicology result establishes that the three drugs and a butorphanol metabolite were detected in the tested bone marrow; it does not independently identify the person responsible.

Why the 2025 indictment was not the first case

Barry Morphew had previously faced murder charges. Colorado dismissed that earlier prosecution without prejudice in April 2022, meaning the dismissal did not permanently bar the state from bringing a new case. Suzanne’s remains were discovered in September 2023, and prosecutors later presented the case to a new grand jury.

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation announced the renewed first-degree-murder indictment on June 18, 2025. Court records identify the proceeding as People of the State of Colorado v. Barry Morphew. The Colorado Judicial Branch case page lists a status conference for September 17, 2026, at 1:00 p.m., by virtual appearance, according to the case information summarized in the available records.

A later federal appellate opinion recorded the earlier dismissal, the discovery of Suzanne’s remains and the 2025 re-indictment while addressing Barry Morphew’s separate civil-rights litigation. The court’s discussion of those events did not decide the renewed criminal case.

What can responsibly be said about Suzanne Morphew’s death?

The most accurate short explanation is:

An autopsy classified Suzanne Morphew’s death as a homicide caused by unspecified or undetermined means in the setting of intoxication with butorphanol, azaperone and medetomidine, a combination known as BAM. The remains showed no visible perimortem trauma, so the coroner did not identify a more specific physical mechanism. Prosecutors later cited the toxicology finding in a renewed first-degree-murder case against her husband, Barry Morphew, who remains accused rather than convicted.

That wording preserves the key distinctions. The official manner of death is homicide. BAM was detected and was part of the official formulation. The precise means of death was not established. And the criminal accusation against Barry Morphew remains pending; an indictment is an allegation, not a conviction.

Frequently Asked Questions

What was Suzanne Morphew’s official cause of death?

The official conclusion was homicide by unspecified or undetermined means in the setting of intoxication with BAM: butorphanol, azaperone and medetomidine. The remains showed no visible perimortem trauma, so the coroner did not identify a more specific physical mechanism.

What is BAM?

BAM is a combination of butorphanol, azaperone and medetomidine. The indictment describes it as a veterinary-sedation combination and says it was not FDA-approved for human use.

Does the BAM finding prove Barry Morphew killed Suzanne?

No. The toxicology finding shows that BAM components and a butorphanol metabolite were detected in tested bone marrow. It does not by itself establish who administered the drugs or prove Barry Morphew’s guilt.

When was Suzanne Morphew’s cause of death announced?

The autopsy conclusion was publicly announced on April 29, 2024. The renewed grand-jury indictment charging Barry Morphew with first-degree murder was announced on June 18, 2025.

Has Barry Morphew been convicted?

No. Barry Morphew has been indicted and accused of first-degree murder after deliberation, but the criminal case is pending and an indictment is not a conviction.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Suzanne Morphew’s official manner of death is homicide. Her death was classified as occurring in the setting of intoxication with BAM—butorphanol, azaperone and medetomidine—while the exact physical means remained unspecified or undetermined. The finding supports an important part of the prosecution’s renewed case against Barry Morphew, but it does not by itself prove who administered the drugs, and Morphew has not been convicted.
