Why Maria said Kenzie earned her vote
In a May 23, 2024 interview with Us Weekly, Maria described two moments that shaped her decision.
Kenzie’s persistence at fire-making
Maria said she watched Kenzie struggle and continue during the Final Four fire-making challenge, seeing her push through frustration, failure and doubt.
Kenzie’s answer about starting a family
At Final Tribal Council, juror Q Burdette asked what the million-dollar prize would mean to the finalists. Kenzie said she wanted to be selfish and use the money to start a family. Maria, a mother who said she had set aside some of her own dreams while raising her children, felt a personal connection to that answer.

“This is not a story about why I didn’t vote for Charlie. This is a story about why I voted for Kenzie,” Maria told Us Weekly. She said Kenzie’s answer “spoke to me on such a deeper level that just transcended the game.”
What the jury vote was—and whether Maria’s vote cost Charlie the win
Kenzie won Survivor 46 with five jury votes to Charlie’s three; finalist Ben Katzman received none, according to Us Weekly’s May 23, 2024 report. Maria was one of the five jurors who voted for Kenzie. She said, “I wasn’t the single vote that changed anything.”

That describes the actual result: Kenzie had a majority without relying on a single decisive vote. But a different vote from Maria could have changed the arithmetic. Us Weekly reported that if Maria had voted for Charlie, the tally would have tied. Ben told the publication that, hypothetically, he would have voted for Charlie as the tiebreaker. That is a reported counterfactual, not what happened at the finale.

Charlie described Maria’s vote as painful. In a May 24, 2024 interview with Us Weekly, he called it a “real sting” and recalled Maria telling him before she left the game, “Get to the final three. You’ve got my vote.” That private exchange is Charlie’s recollection, not an independently verified transcript.

Charlie said that after he learned he had received three votes, he noticed Maria was not approaching him. His expectation and reaction are part of his account; they do not negate the reasons Maria gave for choosing Kenzie.
In a separate interview with TVLine, also published May 23, 2024, Maria said she and Charlie had spoken multiple times and visited during the year after filming, while acknowledging that the immediate post-finale moment was hard. That statement reflects what she said at the time, not necessarily the state of their relationship today.

Later, a March 27, 2026 CinemaBlend article summarized Charlie’s pre-Survivor 50 remarks: he said the loss still stung, though he had come to terms with it in some ways.
