There is no verified poll or definitive ranking of the most disliked Survivor contestants. The ten names below are selected examples drawn from retrospective coverage, contestant recollections and fan discussion—not a measure of what all viewers think. Some drew backlash for ruthless game play or a deliberately antagonistic persona; others became associated with conduct that crossed a line beyond strategy. Those are not the same kind of controversy.
What “fans couldn’t stand” means here
“Most hated” is a fan shorthand, not an objective category. Published lists use different criteria, and online discussion reflects individual opinions rather than a representative sample. This selection is not ranked. The evidence is also uneven: the first seven contestants have support in retrospective reporting or interviews, while the last three appear mainly in community suggestions or fan discussion. Where the available sources do not establish a specific reason for dislike, this article does not supply one.
For context on how the show’s villains and audience reactions have been remembered, see TV Insider’s oral history. Its interviewees describe personal experiences and perceptions, not a measurement of audience opinion.
Ten contestants associated with audience backlash
Colton Cumbie
Cumbie’s derogatory remarks and behavior toward fellow contestants were cited in retrospective lists, and he quit Blood vs. Water. In a 2013 interview, he called himself “probably the most hated player ever”—his own characterization, not a poll result. CBS News coverage includes that interview.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
NaOnka Mixon
Retrospective coverage points to Mixon’s fights, her treatment of fellow contestant Kelly Bruno, who used a prosthetic leg, and her eventual quit. Those events should be described as conduct toward another contestant, not reduced to Bruno’s disability. Reality TV World and CinemaBlend include Mixon in retrospective discussions of disliked players.
Russell Hantz
Hantz is a recurring example of the strategic villain: aggressive play, lies and backstabbing helped create an antagonistic image. That reputation did not mean universal dislike. Former players also credited his gameplay with energizing the series, and Hantz described himself as “the one viewers loved to hate” in TV Insider’s oral history.

Jonny “Fairplay” Dalton
Dalton’s fabricated claim that his grandmother had died during a loved-ones visit became a notorious strategic deception. He said he wanted to be “the biggest bad guy in the history of reality television,” framing the villain persona as intentional. That is a game deception, rather than a claim about audience consensus. TV Insider’s oral history recounts his ambition.
Jeff Varner
Retrospective coverage identifies Varner’s outing of fellow contestant Zeke Smith as a major reason viewers turned against him. This was a serious violation of Smith’s privacy, not ordinary strategic antagonism; discussion of the incident should not sensationalize Smith’s identity. Reality TV World and CinemaBlend discuss Varner in their retrospective lists.

Dan Spilo
Spilo’s case is distinct from the show’s usual villain archetypes. TIME reported that he was removed from Island of the Idols after inappropriate touching was shown and reported. The publication also documented CBS’s subsequent changes to its guidelines and Spilo’s apology to Kellee Kim: “I am deeply sorry for how my actions affected Kellee during the taping of this season of Survivor.” Read TIME’s December 18, 2019 report.
Jerri Manthey
Manthey recalled the cost of being cast and perceived as an early Survivor villain: audience members stopped her and yelled at her, an experience she described as devastating. Her account shows that backlash can reach contestants outside the game and beyond the screen. TV Insider’s oral history records her recollection.

Dan Foley
Foley appears on a user-submitted community suggestion list of disliked contestants. The available material does not establish a specific reason for that entry, so it would be misleading to assign him a particular controversy or claim a broad fan consensus. WatchMojo’s community suggestions provide the limited basis for including his name.
Will Sims II
Sims appears in fan discussion and community suggestions about disliked players, but the available sources do not provide a strong independent account explaining why. His inclusion reflects those mentions only; it is not evidence that viewers generally disliked him. See WatchMojo’s community suggestions and the fan discussion on Reddit.

Brandon Hantz
Hantz also appears in community suggestions and fan discussion of disliked contestants. His appearance in those discussions is not a ranking or a representative finding. See WatchMojo’s community suggestions and the fan discussion on Reddit.

Some contestants intentionally played the antagonist, and many viewers enjoy a compelling strategic villain. Others became associated with conduct that affected another person’s privacy or well-being. Treating both as the same kind of “bad behavior” blurs an important distinction.
Audience reactions also change with editing, context and time. Jerri Manthey’s recollection of being yelled at illustrates that on-screen portrayals can have real consequences, but one contestant’s experience cannot establish how an entire audience felt. A fan thread, a user-submitted list or an editorial retrospective can show that a name circulates in these conversations; none supplies a stable, measurable top ten.
For a separate look at how contestants talk about strategy, CBS Los Angeles interviewed Debbie Wanner after her 2017 elimination from Game Changers. That interview is useful context on strategic decisions, not evidence that Wanner belongs on a most-disliked list.
